I'd rather not got get into a pro-life vs pro-choice debate, but scientifically speaking embryonic stem cells can be differentiated into any cell type, whereas adult stem cells are extremely limited in their differentiation capacity. Some recent advances have suggested that it's technically possible to remove stem cells from embryos without having to terminate them, which might serve as a comprimise which would suit all parties.

That being said, the majority of success stories using exploratory stem cell cures and therapies have had more success with adult stem cells rather than embryonic stem cells. This is potentially because adult stem cells are easier to control (because they don't differentiate into unwanted cells at the site of interest). The other alternative is that because field of science is so new we don't have enough knowledge to control embryonic stem cells properly.

There are plenty of success stories using stem cells - the reason it isn't main stream as yet is because we don't understand the long term effects of stem cell therapy, and until we do it would be extremely dangerous to expose the general population to potentially unsafe therapies.

The scientists that use embryonic stem cells do so because they truely believe they offer a better end result that adult stem cells. They don't use them just to piss off the pro-lifers. It's worth remembering that.

Thanks for the science lesson. The media (in the U.S. anyway) likes to portray this as such a black and white issue. Good to hear it's not as simple as the folks who think it's just about baby-killing make it sound. And if it's not strictly about material recovered from abortions, then why is there even any debate at all? Is the real issue "embryonic stem cell research" is illegal, or all stem cell research? Because I'm not really sure, and I try to pay attention.

I was listening to the radio yesterday and it was said that Michael J Fox's OWN research company donated 1.5 million dollars to a new form of treatment that is 60% effective, which is MORE SO THAN STEM CELL RESEARCH HAS BEEN! It's a procedure where they actually drilll holes into the patients head, then instert a needle into the brain containing a virus that has genes added to it. The virus carries the genes to all parts of the brain, the brain responds to the gene and the symptoms are stopped! But for some reason they wont promote this new technique. Why?


Also, Michael was off his medication to do that commercial too. When he's on it he hardly shakes and he admitted to not taking them yesterday. He also doesn't take his meds when he's at congress lobying them for more money. He manipulates his condition to get sympothy for more money, plain and simple. Michael J Fox with Parkinson's is the new 9/11 on the internet. We all know now that Fox was taking his medication during the commerical and it was the medication making him motion as such.

According to the Washington Post:

In an interview in Ladies Home Journal’s September edition, Fox said he was taking a medication that causes jerking, fidgeting and other abnormal involuntary movements, known as dyskinesia. Fox said he was taking another medication to lessen those side affects.

An official of the National Parkinson Foundation said movements like those exhibited by Fox are the result of taking medication to treat the disease, which would otherwise result in rigidity.

“When you see someone with those movements, it’s not because they have not taken medication but because they probably have taken medication for some time,” the official said. “If you don’t take the medication, then you freeze.”
