A shame, maybe, but not a surprise. They didn't require registration, making themselves and their users easy targets, and they didn't require that their users maintain a decent ratio, making themselves attractive to leechers. If there's a lesson here, it's that you can't count on people who want something for nothing to play fair.

Late edit: I was thinking that if there were any other site with the same weaknesses as Suprnova, it'd be TV Torrents. And guess what? They're gone.

Is it really the beginning of the end?

It's the beginning of the end of all of this shit being quite as public as it is. I mean, a fucking blindfolded Inspector Clouseau could have found Suprnova -- and even so, this news article doesn't specify that they closed because of legal action; sounds more like it was the threat of legal action that scared them into shutting down.

The real problem isn't Bit Torrent sites. There will always be P2P sharing of some sort. The problem the MPAA faces is the source of these files. Full DVD-Rs don't get from the studio to the internet without someone on the inside helping the process along. Spider-Man 2 was available over a month before its release date. Same with Bourne Supremacy, Chronicles of Riddick and Van Helsing -- those last 3 all interestingly and conveniently coming from the same studio, Universal.

Suprnova was a dice roll for users too. Downloading anything remotely popular could warrant a fishing expidition from the MPAA. I never used Suprnova for that "large target" reasoning.

But for the biggest leak this year, I'd say it has to have been The Incredibles on DVD-R. Barely a month after theater date, it's on the Internet.

The MPAA has no jurisdiction over us non-US downloaders. That falls under the actual studio. And even then it's just a complaint to your ISP to tell you to stop and remove the file. And there are plenty of ways to avoid them dodgey MPAA/RIA IPs from accessing your PC.

Just use private trackers. Anyway last time I check you can't check what I'm downloading/uploading that is invasion of privacy, get a warrant bitches.

I don't think it works by what's on your Hard Drive OR by what your downloading. It works by what your UPLOADING and sharing. At least that was the case with a friend of mine. And the nature of Bit Torrent means your almost always gonna be uploading...

Demonoid's just died now.

Due the legal pressure to shut down the server, plus the hosting costs going higher due the increasing bandwidth usage, it's not possible to keep the site up at the moment.

Thanks for your comprehension.

Bollocks.

(12/28 UPDATE!) LokiTorrent is officially being sued by the MPAA! If you've ever benefitted from bittorrent or this site, now is the time to show your support. We need this fund to reach its goal!

Loki seem to be trying to do something about it though. $8755 in support so far, $30,000 needed.

The MPAA are once again bigger arseholes... Come on... BitTorrent sites don't even host Illegal Material there simply providing the Portals, what are they being sued for?

yes but who's gonna say "I uploaded the files so go ahead and sue me not that poor website, it's not like I need a retirement"??

LokiTorrent started collecting money for their legal defense last week, before there was any word of a lawsuit. Coincidentally, they were sued this week -- yet they're still operating, which seems a little odd. Not that I don't trust a site that helps to facilitate piracy (ahem), but I'd kind of like to see word of this suit from a more objective party.

"Simply providing the portals" sounds about as sturdy a defense as "I only drove the getaway car."

Loki would have had prior warning to the impending suit. They would have had several letters telling them to stop and a final one that would have said the legal process would begin at a certain date unless they stopped. I guess that's what prompted the collection.
The problem is that Loki are/were hosting the files, not just the torrents. A fair few of the ones from Suprnova where seeded at and by Loki.
