Having read only the first book and seen the latest IMAX movie, I'm mildly curious to know if this was hinted at earlier or if this is simply a post-fame attention grab. From the author herself:

People in the 50's were such cute little creatures. Thinking a thin cloth would shield you from 5,000+ degrees and a 10,000 psi pressure wave traveling 800+ mph is such a darling little naive concept.
