The books are all excellent. But VERY cerebral. Lots and lots and lots of rumination in the minds of the characters. It is all very interesting, but difficult to put in a film. Hard to read sometimes as well. I think I had to re-start God Emperor of Dune at least 3 or 4 times before I finally got through it. And then it was on Audible ... so it kept going even when I was drifting off. I mean how much traveling through the desert with a giant worm can you put in one book? Well, a few hundred pages, it seems.
But clearly you cannot put a few hundred pages worth of walking and talking in the desert into a movie. Movies demand ACTION! And sooooo much of Dune is in everyone's minds. How do you get that inner monologue out as dialogue and action? The SciFi Channel did a super miniseries, much better than the film IMHO.
Villenueve is meticulous in crafting what you see on the screen, and I think he can do a lot of storytelling without traditional dialogue and action, so he is probably a great choice. I know I am definitely looking forward to this one.
