Iron Man 2008 Review

Reviews & Views for Film & Scores

Postby Biggs » April 29th 2008 3:30 am

Well, after some ass-kissing I've scored tickets to the Aussy premiere of Ironman tomorrow night so I'll pop up my thoughts afterwards! I'm expecting HUGE things.

CBR, Newsarama, and AICN (twice even) all have reviews up now.

And I have seen the words "best super-hero movie ever" battered around. Sure, maybe that's a stretch, but it looks like this is at least going to be a movie worth the price of admission. And for me, it's been a while since that happened.

Harry @ AICN said in a Talkback that the Nick Fury (Sam Jackson) scene IS in the general release print after the credits roll !!

Seen it. Short version Best Marvel Superhero Film.

Not gonna belt out a long review, because there's plently out there that sum up my thoughts just quickly though, it really is fantastic. RDJ completely and utterly steals the show, he's THE perfect actor to be playing this kinda character. The CG is totally flawless there's seriously moments where I had no idea whether it was man-in-suit or CG work. I'll tell you though, there's some close-ups of the Mark II suit which are AWE inspiringly awesome, and if that's Stan Winstones work he'll nail awards for it. It's incredible stuff.

Gwyeneth (sp?) Paltrow is sensational as Pepper Potts I was worried she was going to annoy (ala Katie Holmes/Kirsten Dunst) but she's seriously briliant and has legit chemistry with RDJ some of their scenes were lovely and like alot of indie films (and especially ones RDJ has appeared in like Kiss Kiss Bang Bang) it's the small moments that Downey shines. He's just got a great charisma about him he's in top gear.

The action stuff is all there, but the beautiful part about this film is the action isn't contrived and shot hap-hazardly - where you got (espiecally with Spiderman 2 and 3) the feel of "Action set-piece here, talk here, set-piece aghain here" it's a real organic flow to it and you FEEL Tony Stark is in trouble the way the final battle is set-up you really know Stark is in trouble (ala Spiderman) it's not a mesh-mash of wall-to-wall action there's you're classic old-school "villian pauses to talk" moments which evoked Vader/Skywalker moments for me, really brilliant stuff Jeff Bridges proves once again how versatile he is and how he REALLY is "The Dude"

Just brilliant stuff from Bridges Terrance Howard bored me a little, he's kinda just there and a bit of a non-event for the movie, they're setting his character up to be more of a "thing" for the next film, which I guess is okay just kinda frustrating because he's obviously got a bit of potential.

...oh the Sam Jackson stuff is after the credits, it's pretty awesome a cool suprise coda on the filck.

The bit I liked MOST about the movie is the whole "Iron Man" moniker isn't given (or mentioned) until RIGHT near the end of the film keeping the film grounded in the Tony Stark character was inspired he doesn't become a total faceless tool in his movements, the way he flies, walks or speaks it's Tony Stark the WHOLE time, not just a flashy looking suit. I really liked those touches kept it real for me

All up, it's the most even Superhero Flick for quite some time doesn't reach the lofty (quality) highs of Batman Begins, but it nestles in a nice balance between ridiculously good fun, good acting and classy storytelling. It's really well done. It has a strong middle and ending, which Begins lacked and though the beginning is a little odd and doesn't feel 'right' in the way it opens up you kinda just go with it, because you instantly fall in love with Stark, his world and the danger you're thrown into first off the bat.
Definatly the best of the Marvel stable of superheros, ditch the Spiderman Ironman is the way to go.

8.5/10

Worth seeing more than once!

I was never a fan of Iron Man. The movie was very good. A little boring at parts. Also, I really didn't like when they brought in mecha-Bridges toward the end. It reminded me a lot of Spider-Man where the gayness meter began to peak as soon as the Green Goblin entered. Mecha-Bridges is contained in just one scene, however and the movie ends on such a great high, I almost forgot all about it. Anyone who sees it will know what I'm talking about.

The trailers for Indy and Dark Knight are incredible.

Was it just me or during indy's narration when he says "protected by the living dead" the skeleton has eyes that move on cue?

Also, what was the reaction like?

I didn't really notice the eyes in the skeleton. Hopefully I can get a better look when LFL releases the HD version, this weekend please. There was a lot of commotion during that trailer. I was in a crowd where it seemed I was the only one who found it funny when Indy tells Mutt not to touch anything. Dark Knight's trailer on the other hand got a lot of laughs, especially Joker. This is going to be an incredible summer at the movies.

Just got back from an early screening here in O.C. and both trailers got a huge pop from the packed house. I fucking loved this flick. It's Downey's show all the way but Favreau deserves a lot of credit for keeping the pace and energy of the film on track. Bring on the sequel.

Great movie and up there with X2 for the best of the Marvel character films. The ending was probably the best ending for a comic book besides Batman Begins. Usually they have the hero flying or running at the end around the camera, but this was so different and unexpected. Awesome.

I don't know what to add except to confirm the obvious: This movie is fucking amazing. For me, the most complete superhero movie ever made - as far as acting, laughs, plotting, excitement, FUCK YEAH!1! moments, geek love it's all done right and you'll love every second of it, I PROMISE YOU.

It would be criminal to ruin the ending just go see it.

Iron Man (2008) cam version

Postby TroyObliX » May 3rd 2008 12:45 am

Saw this today, surprise. Not much to add, other than it utterly kicked ass. And I am totally going to say it; I fucking told you so all along. :schoolyou: J/K, sort of.

One thing I did notice was a lack of  moments. I hope whoever directs the rest of Marvel Studios films takes note, so I don't have to be ashamed of being a fan anymore.

That would be nice.

[hr]
It's streaming online here.

It's a cam version. In English, but with asian subtitles, and some of the scenes are edited.

Thanks go to Topeka, sort of, for suggesting the tvlinks site for something completely different (Small Soldiers) earlier today. I searched the site just for kicks and low and behold there it was. I don't expect it to be there long either. One of the two links there have allready disappeared.

The funniest review I've seen was from some random on Rotten Tomatoes which simply read "Iron Man Raped me, the happy way"

Can't wait to see this thing again next week best way to kick off the Blockbuster movies, roll on Batman Begins!

Very enjoyable film. Much better than Spiderman and Superman Returns and anything other than X-Men 1 and 2, and Batman Begins.

FINALLY got to go see this last night. Like everyone else I agree, great f'ing movie. Plot, acting, action and story were all there. The Nick Fury part after the credits was a nice little touch as well.

I didn't really know the complete history behind the Tony Stark story line, other than picking up a few comics here and there. The movie did a great job of showing us the man before and his self indulgence with life. Jon Fearveua blah, blah don't know how to spell his name did a fantastic, bang up job with this. Really can't wait for the sequel. Speaking of that I've heard that RDJ is wanting to explore the "Demon in a bottle" series ( I think that's right) and if that's the case with that story line, that could make for a really great sequel, as long as it's not some emo iron man dressed all in black.

Also, great way to end the movie, did not see that coming.

The only part I didn't like is that I was late to the movie so I missed watching TDK trailer.

about that spy pic that they used in the film as the newspaper image.. well the guy that took the pic sued Paramount and Marvel over it and they had to alter the pic in the DVD. the pic now has a car behind Ironman as if it was taken during the freeway battle. dumbfuck. I'd be damn Geeky proud if my spy pic ended up in the fuckin movie!!!

Aint that the truth. And unless this movie gets an unaltered re-release (not likely), no one (non-fans anyway) will even remember that pic. Idiot.
