if it's any consolation dude this is exactly what I've been hearing all over the Internet. General audiences are lapping this up and the asshat critics are burning it. What does that tell ya? There's no ring of power or web-slingin' superhero? :monocle: :heavymetal:

I loved Pitch Black too and I will seeing this movie on opening day when it's released here in Sydney. No 2-bit germ critic is gonna tell me otherwise

btw, have you seen the animated DVD COR - Dark Fury?

I like it, it was a fun movie to watch. Vin kicked ass. I want to see the directors cut.

I had a blast with it.

The directors cut should be interesting, since they supposedly cut a lot of the story elements because jackasses in the test audiences can't understand a movie if it has more than 2 lines of dialogue in a row.

But,yeah, this is Vin Diesel's signature character. I don't think he'll ever fit into a role better than he does with Riddick. Alas, the movie's basically bombing, so looks like he won't get the chance to do it again. Maybe it'll do better when its released overseas.

I thought it was dumb fun, but castrated by the PG-13 rating.

It would've been a lot more interesting as a hard R.

My sentiments echo the thoughts of pretty much everyone else. A large number of critics have been blasting away at this (although nice little side note is that the Aussie critics have actually been fairly kind to it since not all of them have steel poles inserted up their arses) yet it's a rather enjoyable film. It doesn't aspire to tell some earth-shattering story that will profoundly change your life, or play to the usual good-guy vs the universe cliché.

You have the best killer in the galaxy, his little protegé and a veritable legion of mind-wiped soldiers. Pure, unadulterated (which could be good or bad depending on your point of view) fun that isn't let down by over-bearing studios or pompous directors.

And this is Diesel's plumb role because the lack of morality to the character and the setting feed to the presence he brings. Of all the movies he's done outside of the Riddick character, only Boiler Room doesn't show his acting weaknesses. With some luck they might be able to squeeze another one out, even if it has to be a directy to DVD release.

As to Dark Fury, it wasn't bad, but it was woefully short. I think that they could have done more, but it fizzled a bit at the end and after the slow draw-out of the beginning it ends too rapidly. The animation fit fairly well with the characters, it gave it the edge that Pitch Black had. If they went down a more traditional anime style it would have looked a little comical because of the fairly rigid shapes that are used.

I had great fun with it as well. I was expecting a pompous sci-fi action CGI orgy and that was exactly what I got.

Oh, and the Escape from Butcher Bay videogame prequel was truly awesome as well. Loved every second of it.
