There's a guy on the link above sharing what he claims is the soundtrack, I've not had the chance to listen to it all yet but what I have heard sounds new to me. I'll post up the link so others can have a listen and see what they think, apologies to DP and mods if it turns out not to be the real deal.

I've also went back over this thread in the last few days and had a good laugh at all the reactions to the various bits of casting news, from down right hatred towards Ledger to him now being some kind of legend. I will say tho it's been a hell of a ride these past couple of years, what with the viral marketing and what-have you, I think I can honestly say I've enjoyed the buildup to this film moer than any Star Wars prequel.

Imax comes to Glasgow on the 23rd of July, I need to avoid this place or I'm gonna be spoilered out, that's why I hadn't read the article on Wired or watched the 12 spoiler scenes, I've seen enough for me now, cant wait til this bad-boy gets here.

Damn... the soundtrack, the new TV spot... this movie already owns. I just got back from Anime Expo at the L.A. Convention Center and saw a few guys with Ledger-as-Joker shirts walking around. I was expecting to see atleast one guy dressed at The Dark Knight's Joker (hey, I caught a guy dressed as Vader and an Imperial troop at the show) but I guess that'll have to wait for San Diego.

The soundtrack is awesome, an improvement over the first (which was good to begin with). The final track starts skipping during the last 2 mins - at first I thought maybe it was an electronic sample in the track itself. Whereas 'Batman Begins' had a more traditional orchestral score with electronic elements, this one lays them on thick - which sounds appropriate considering we have a more technologically advanced (I guess?) Batman compared to our 'League of Shadows' Batman from the first.

Still, Batman has no prominate theme other then the "Duhhhh DAHHHHH" throughout the album*, unless the reused 'Eptesicus' from the first film (which is used quite a bit) is considered the theme. Overall, nothing as recognizable as Danny Elfman's theme, but its a great album and worth a listen.

Other things I noticed while listening: I was surprised by how much of a MGS4 vibe it had (from former Zimmer employee, Harry Gregson-Williams). And there were a few times I thought I was hearing the intro to Madonna's 'I'll Remember'. Weird.




*All of that talk from Hans Zimmer about Batman not earning his theme in the first film and to expect it in 'The Dark Knight' is shit. He made it sound like he was a cunning composer with a well thought out plan to introduce a Batman theme proper in this film, but in the end it just made him look like a dick who wings it with composing. I guess in the end it's just a job. This is just sheep bitching, sorry.

I'm sorry, but Hans Zimmer sucks. I can hear Gladiator, The Rock and Pirates throughout all of this. Nothing really distinguishes itself. He is miles below Shore or Williams.

Still, I don't think it'll detract from the movie.

Fair enough. Han Zimmer isn't anywhere near my top 5 (John Williams, Danny Elfman, Michael Giacchino*, John Ottman & Jon Brion with Jerry Goldsmith trailing closely behind) and I probably wouldn't give him the time of day if he weren't scoring a Batman film, but I'll give credit when credit is due and say that 'Dark Knight' (w/ James Newton Howard) is probably his best/most listenable score, though that could change over repeat listens or in the context of the film. For the record his 'Batman Begins' score bored me to death the first time, but it grew on me - though it'll never beat Elfman. I'd love to ask Elfman what he thinks about this music ("Fuck! I wrote a great theme and they replace it with two fucking notes! Kill me!").

Chris Nolan can say what he'd like about 'realism&Batman'/subtle music, but for me he'll always be an operatic/larger than life character - his music should/can represent that. Fuck, you put on a mask and wear a cape, realism ceases to exist - give me an awesome theme!




* Anyone else think that once John Williams kicks the bucket, Giacchino will take his place as bombastic franchise guy? I used to think it would be John Ottman after his awesome 'Superman Returns' score, but besides two films (Valkyrie coming up) there's been nothing. Giacchino's 'Speed Racer' was legend, even if the movie failed to impress the masses (kitschy but entertaining shit) and 'Star Trek' will blow socks off.

I really don't mind a proper Batman theme this time around. To me, it sounds like The Joker's theme ("Why So Serious?") is an answer to the theme established for the Batman. I love the way the first two tracks fade into each other.



That's a pretty good list you've got. Brion's always great if not the most prolific composer. I'll add Angelo Badalamenti and Peter Gabriel ("Passion" still kicks ass). Giacchino's "Speed Racer" work was impressive but I'm willing to bet that more people will turn to Elfman than anyone else when the maestro puts down the baton.

Well said. What a buncha pricks. To call the Elfman theme 'happy' is laughable. It defined the 90s toons, it could have worked just as well for this.

I prefer the approach Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard are taking with the new Batman scores. It's a much more mature approach which throws more emphasis on the visuals and writing. It's an approach John Williams could be accused of as well, as his scores have become less reliant on memorable melodies and more interested in tone and texture.

Funny, I figured Williams just got lazy.
