So do we love it, or will everyone make fun of it vis-à-vis TPM and AOTC?

There's not much to make fun of. It's very, very safe. Then again, ANH is pretty bland.

I always thought TPM was a very solid title. It was AOTC that lit the world on fire.

What I do like so far is that they're not framing the title with episodes (episode vii: the force awakens). I'd like them to go back to making the title of the episode the focus of the marketing ala the OT.

Twitter people are saying LFL has confirmed that "Episode VII" is NOT a part of the film's official title. But there's still a section on starwars.com with the VII designation.

Curious to see where this goes or what the rationale is.

I gotta let this one roll around in my brain a bit; take it for a test drive. It seems fine.

It fits with "A New Hope" and "The Phantom Menace" as very "first-in-a-series" titles.

It might be in honour of Episode 4....When A New Hope was released that initially never had the episode number tagged to the title...not sure...just a thought.

The episode numbers were seldom a part of the official marketing of the movie titles. Of course the "VII" will appear in the opening scroll.

While The Phantom Menace and A New Hope are very abstract and mysterious, The Force Awakens doesn't seem to flow so well with them for being too specific (in this case, to The Force).

And the rumour is that they're dropping the 'Episode VII' from the title itself or just the marketing campaign from now on?

This is another callback to the OT! There was no marketing of the actual episode number back then. Only the TITLE was relevant and important for marketing the movie. For the prequels they centered the marketing around the number of the episode. Now, as they do alot of callbacks to the OT for VII they do it with the movie title.

I love the title and its meanings: Restart. hand over the torch to a new generation. Awesome, exactly what we need. Its mysterious, it sounds mythic. It sounds STAR WARS.

HOWEVER: I'd love to have a more celebrating announcement of the title...

This may not seem like a big deal, but the term "Episode 7" appeared in the original Disney press release announcing its acquisition of LFL.

http://thewaltdisneycompany.com/disney- ... asfilm-ltd

So something had to have changed at some point in production. I think even casual moviegoers are familiar enough with the franchise to just designate this movie "Episode 7" so there is some ingrained thinking in the public LFL/Disney appears to be trying to break.

I would have envisioned a title like this applying more to the stand-alone films instead of continuing the 1-6 Saga. But the more I think about the title, the more I like it. Does have that abstract, ethereal feel to it.

My initial reaction is that it's a bit of a yawner. The fact that The Force is personified in the title makes me wonder about the larger plot. However, the phrasing doesn't tingle my imagination like my two favorite titles (The Empire Strikes Back and Attack of the Clones).

At the least, I don't feel that The Force Awakens suits the ambitious approach that's been taken Abram's and company. I was expecting something more exciting.

Topeka wrote:Holy shit shit shit! It has that republic serial vibe, sounds good to me!

Maybe; maybe not. The titles for Republic serials were fairly concrete. So, The Force would literally have to become self-aware in order for the title to fit Republic's template. We'll see if that's the case.

I find it hard to believe they are going to completely get rid of episode numbering I can understand why they would want to not make the number the focus but to keep the narrative cohesive they should at least keep the number in the opening scroll.

Maybe. But really this is just a marketing decision we're talking about here. They don't need to advertise it out the ass as being EPISODE SEVVVVVENNNNN. We already know it's Episode VII. They want to focus on the title, which makes perfect sense... From a certain point of view... :?

If anyone seriously thinks it won't say Episode VII in the opening crawl, then you are seriously retarded. Of course they aren't changing the crawl: they just seem to be moving away from marketing the Episode instalment numerically. And even that we don't know for sure. We've only seen ONE image with a title reveal. It isn't a poster and it probably isn't even the final logo for the movie.

And, word. I can't even see what the debate is.

These never caused any confusion, as far as I am aware.

Once people had got their heads around the fact that the first one was actually Episode IV that is...

The teaser graphic with the title gives the impression that this is the plan with Episode VII.

I agree the title is very safe and I think that's the point. It's like I said before, this movie is going to be all about getting the general public back on board with Star Wars and I think a lot of fans are going to be very happy with everything about this movie.

That said, I'm more than a little disappointed and to be honest saddened, that they are doing away with the pulpy titles George has established as being a hallmark of the series in favor of something that feels homogenized. Love him or hate him, George always gave us something that was uniquely him and knowing that we're losing that is something that really bums me out.

To me, the main reason to include the episode numbers in the posters and marketing had to due with the order of the films. The episode references showed up with the prequel films so that audiences would know that the film took place before the original movies. If Disney isn't worrying about "ordinal confusion," so be it.

I'm sorta over the title now, anyway. I just hope the film's awesome. :wookiee:

Check this clip out from way back in 1983 which was on British Breakfast TV...looks like The Force Awakens was already in the mix way back then :)
