Looks wonderful.

The ending line I loved, "I only know one Truth... It's time for the Jedi to end." I say more about it here: http://millenniumfalcon.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=2026&t=10026

Out of all of the visuals presented, a few really jumped out at me...

Kylo Ren's lightsaber is now completely flame. There's no plasma attributes to it at all. If he's fallen even further to the Dark Side, then this is a great way to show it. As he tumbles further into chaos, his blade reflects it.

A-Wings are back. And if that's true, then that's one OLD bird the Resistance is relying on.

The Nebulon-B type frigates that they're using - they look even older and more fragile than the ones we saw in The Original Trilogy. The bubble-domed turrets make them feel all of the more fragile. Between relying on those ancient buckets and the A-Wings, time's are tough.

Seeing Rey running at full speed at night, with Anakin's lightsaber lit, she looks absolutely desperate to stop the Inevitable. Yoda had some very valuable Life lessons about such situations, I wonder if she'll fail the test like her master did?

The tattered tomes in the midst of an ancient tree's root system, and the word "...balance..." being whispered. Yes. So true. Violating Nature always results in disaster. Always. Cosmic Law can never be broken. Observing its obviousness is Good. Violating it, trying to twist it, is Evil. Trying to bend It to one's advantage is always a perverse act that results in grotesque misery.

I cannot wait till December.

Good thing The Doctor is dropping in with the Tardis tonight. :shaman:

Yes, I'll be violating Cosmic Law tonight. I'll let you know if it was worth the ticket price. :D

I'm very happy. I never had a doubt that Rian Johnson would fucking kill this. He is one smart dude. I really hope they just give him Episode 9 and move CT off the project.

It also looks like we're finally progressing the story with new themes, story beats and new environments.

We're getting another walker sequence, but at least it appears to be far different visually.

Not seeing any mention of additional background audio faintly heard during Rey's dialogue:

  • "Light" - Princess Leia's message to Obi-Wan in ANH
  • "Darkness" - Darth Vader's breathing and Obi-Wan talking about Vader in ANH
  • "And balance" - Yoda speaking about the Force in TESB

Also, I love the opening shot of Rey in intense distress that perfectly mirrors the shot of Finn that opened TFA's first teaser trailer. Un-Star Wars but very dramatic and most welcome. Something tells me that's JJ's hand (this time, invisible).

Postby Doctor When » April 15th 2017 1:56 am

i think the only solid thing to take away from the teaser is that it's, hopefully, going to explore the nature of the Jedi, balance and the prophecy of the chosen one. In my opinion, that's really the only legitimate thread to explore whilst still involving Luke, Leia et al. Once that's out of the way, future sequels can do what they want, but rounding the square of Anakin/the chosen one's true function/purpose, and where that leaves his son/daughter and galaxy, is really the only thematic question that needs to be addressed in IX and X (IMO). I'll be pleasantly surprised if this is the case...

This trailer didn't really show us all that much, which is I suppose why, it's a TEASER.

Very dark tone and color pallet to this teaser. Still wouldn't mind seeing Phasma do something other than march around while holding her rifle.

But I have high, high hopes for this film. Luke clearly has a bigger presence in this film, which can only be a good thing. TLJ truly appears to take the story established in TFA and take it down to a place in a similar way ESB did from ANH. Pumped!

Came back here to say that the trailer does prove one thing...

It's that Rey IS a Skywalker. The way Rey is contemplating about the force... That shot mirrors the Anakin one from AOTC..

So to these who argued against it with me in 2015 over this... I leave you all with this:

Okay then going by your logic, Leia shouldn't be related to Kylo Ren considering how they framed her shot to be similar to Kylo's TFA shot on the Star Destroyer during the Starkiller death blast scene.

Hokusai: Yeah, I read the articles that news media outlets made on the trailer. When you're on Facebook, you get like bazillion of posts on the teaser trailer alone. I loved the 40th Anniversary Panel, btw

Really surprised that no one here has posted a high res of the TLJ teaser poster, though. Usually you guys would be top on that stuff each time LFL releases a SW movie poster.

Actually, it means they're both force sensitive. Since TFA is a scene for scene remake of ANH. would you have preferred Leia go "Nooo!" the same way Luke in ANH did when Vader killed Obi-Wan? :XD:

I'd take the CGI Yoda's reaction over Leia trying to copy Luke from ANH.

Edit: Bander. I hate to correct you, but you're misremembering the scene...Yoda's reaction was to the Jedi being slaughtered by Anakin, not Mace.

I'm talking about Yoda's first reaction after Mace dies and Anakin is named Darth Vader, and before the Jedi slaughter:

Yeah now I see what you mean...I honestly thought the TFA Leia reaction shot resembled more to the second Yoda reaction. I'm just saying because notice how Leia almost drops to her knees but had to sit down. Maybe it did hurt more because she was extremely attached to her husband? It's interesting how the Jedi philosophy forbade attachments. Yet, here Leia feels attachment to Han Solo. Maybe in TLJ, Luke found a way to break out of the usual conventions that the Jedi prior to TFA had to adhere to? Is it possible Luke wants to remain a Force user but at the same time be able to have these feelings... attachments, etc? Remember, Anakin had to marry Padme in secret to avoid getting kicked out of the Jedi Order. So maybe Luke simply wants to tear down the Order then rebuild it back up using some ancient rules he read in the book that was hinted at in the teaser? If I remember, the Prequels hinted at how the Sith went through pretty much the same thing and established the Rule of Two...

Your opinion, but a lot of SW fans especially in the twittersphere picked up on the Rey Skywalker connection.

Re: TRAILER

Looks like those rumors about the Force originating from a giant tree may be true. The rumors also said that Rey is the true Chosen One, unlike Anakin, and that she is the reincarnation of the original good female Force user who founded the Jedi and was murdered by her evil brother, the originator of the Dark Side, who is actually Snoke.

I think the trailer and Celebration throw a lot of water on the idea that Rey is a Skywalker. Daisy confirmed in an interview yesterday that Luke has no idea who she is when she shows up.

Postby Kyle » April 16th 2017 3:30 pm

From Monari:
Rey is the true Chosen One, unlike Anakin

Looking at all of the evidence, it seems pretty clear to me that it all points to Anakin being the Chosen One.

The Jedi may have debated it, and Obi-Wan (in Rebels) may have even thought it was Luke, but one must first look at all of the evidence beforehand.

Anakin was a Force-induced creation. His mother made it clear that she had no idea how she got pregnant (extremely similar to the virgin-mother principle that is found in numerous mythologies), and, for a while, it was "official" that Darth Plagueis and Darth Sidious manipulated mid-chlorians to create him. This last part is, at this time, not considered canon. That aside, his creation was Force-induced.

How do we know that he alone brought Balance to the Force?

After all, even Obi-Wan rightfully felt that Luke was the Chosen One.

But Luke did not destroy the Emperor. He extended MERCY to his father, and that unmerited gift presented an opportunity to Vader. It was Vader, and Vader ALONE, that made the deliberate CHOICE to rid the galaxy of the most powerful Sith who ever lived.

The point of showing Luke being helpless on the receiving end of Sidious' Force-lightning is just that: Luke was HELPLESS. He could NOT have defeated Sidious. Only Vader/Anakin could. With as little humanity as he had left, he lifted Sidious above his head and flung him to the core of the Death Star.

I don't believe that being a Skywalker means the galaxy can't be in Balance either. If that was true, then Anakin would've had to have murdered his son and daughter after he had slain Sidious. So, was there a confirmation that the Balance had been restored at the very moment that Sidious was killed?

Also, was there some kind of SIGN afterward to confirm that the redeemed Anakin was the Chosen One?

The answer is "Yes" to both questions.

At the Endor celebration, his Force-ghost appeared alongside Obi-Wan's and Yoda's. This happened without the TRAINING that Obi-Wan and Yoda received from Qui-Gon. This makes his ghost's appearance all the more "miraculous" an event. Qui-Gon's ability to maintain his consciousness (and only as a Voice) after passing into The Beyond was a major event. It indicates that something HUGE was happening at THAT time. Obi-Wan's and Yoda's later ability to project a super-consciousness in an observable form was even more momentous. Another major sign of just how epic the times they were active in were. So Anakin's being able to be there at the celebration is a very big deal indeed.

At the end of Return of the Jedi, the Force was in Balance.

Something happened afterward to throw it out of Balance, and I postulate here viewtopic.php?f=2026&t=10026 that a large contributor to the destabilization of the Force was Luke's reestablishment of the old Jedi Order.

I touch on just a couple of examples of how thoroughly corrupt the Jedi Order was in that thread, so I won't repeat them here now. The main point being is that the Jedi fully believed that they were The Good Guys and shining beacons of being unified with the Light Side of the Force, when clearly they weren't. Their actions advanced great cruelty and barbarism, because they enormously benefited a measly minority of elite psychopaths. They were serving this function BEFORE Palpatine even became a Senator, when there was still a Republic, so imagine just how twisted their fruits were by the time Palpatine was the Supreme Chancellor.

There would have been no Emperor had it not been for the Jedi being the very tip of his spear.

Based on the very scant evidence we actually have, I can only conclude at this time that Rey and Luke will be the first generation of Force Adepts who will finally be beholden to maintaining Balance in the Force by observing Natural/Cosmic Law. For this to happen, the old/order-based and thoroughly corrupt ways have to be abandoned, for both the Light Side users and the Dark. Anything less will only ensure Chaos.

You have an interesting theory. I think the reemergence of Snoke (Plageuis) could also have thrown the force out of balance, resulting in the force birth of Rey as yet another chosen one.

Perhaps when Luke went searching for the first Jedi temple he wanted to study the prophecy and it's seen in that book shown in the trailer. It wouldn't surprise me if Rey was in fact a force birth.

What do you all think happened to Rey just before the first shot in the trailer?

  • Force vision inside the cave, like Luke in ESB.

  • Got her ass kicked by Luke while training.

  • Force fisting.

I'm gonna rule out #3 :metal:

My first reaction was she had another force vision. Luke and R2 from the other perspective could have been in it?

Thematically, a Star Wars variation on the Tree of Knowledge and Bodhi Tree makes sense. Snoke being reincarnated Rey's brother doesn't make sense since he isn't human.

Luke doesn't recognize Rey like Obi-wan doesn't remember R2 and Yoda doesn't know Luke when they meet on Dagobah.

Watching the trailer again just now, I was reminded of my first impression of the first few seconds when it premiered -

I thought we were seeing a starfield fading in, then I thought it looked like a close up of one of Snoke's eyes, then it became a rock formation, then Rey's hand appears.

Did anyone else have those initial impressions, or am I just

If that's true, it would be a mistake. Well, a bigger mistake.

Rey and Ben should have been brother and sister in the first place.

But seriously, I enjoy this trailer very much.
I wonder if that first Rey scene could actually be what we'll see right after the opening crawl. From starfield to the surface of the planet - without a spaceship for the very first time! ;)
Also, I totally dig some stunning visuals, like the red dust clouds on the white planet. Let's hope they will make sense, too ;) .
I'm not really in love with the ships though - I mean the "short B-wings" in space. But maybe it's just me - I tend to dislike SW hardware created after Joe Johnston's era ;) .

Captain Walker - where did that "spoiler" come from? Is it considered to be from a "solid" source?

I've read it several times. Thought about it for a while.

It's STUPID.

I deeply hope that it isn't even remotely accurate.

There doesn't need to be any ACTUAL source for the Force.

If THAT tree is THE source for it, then whomever possesses it is theoretically able to harness tremendous power. If not, WHY not? It doesn't even matter what *kind* of source-artifact it may be. The fact that there is a concrete source for such a universal power opens up a Whole Can of (needless) Worms such as the first question that came to me as stated above.

Why cannot the Force just "be?"

Luke admonishes Rey to BREATHE. In, and out. Up, and down. Refreshing air in, toxic poisons out. Inseparable.

The entirety of Nature follows Natural/Cosmic Law, and it is automatically DUAListic in nature. No peaks without valleys. Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. ALL complex life, "good" or "bad," MUST consume (destroy) the life of another in order to survive and thrive. There is no escaping this. Any expounding on the Force can just focus on what's obvious if one fires up two brain cells and rubs them together before thinking about the Ultimate Structure of the universe.

Man - how I hope that the Force Source Tree Theory is just a load of bunk.

If not... (*shudder*).

It came from a supposed source named KY10REY who claims to be a production insider on Episode VIII.

He/she gave it to the Star Wars fan site stormtrooperlarry.com.

It has made its way around the web, including 4chan and Reddit.

Some say the source is a fraud.

Anyway, here is the page:
https://stormtrooperlarry.com/2016/06/15/star-wars-episode-viii-jedi-history-101/

One problem is that this same source did leak actual production photos from the set.

So there is at least the possibility that this source is real and telling the truth about this.

Rey appears to be a Force of nature, which is like a Skywalker, but not necessarily an indication of heredity.

Ren/Ben is absolutely a Skywalker. With his temper tantrum, starfighter spinning, overhead-shot Clone trooper Stormtrooper leading, and internal conflicts that twist like an emotional pretzel, he is all types of Anakin throughout this trailer. (Along these line - I don't think he missiles his mom as the trailer suggests. Killing Dad didn't bring him power or peace - why would he choose to continue a pointless cycle?)

Thematically and visually epic this trailer is. Are we supposed to think that Rey is Snoke's chosen one? Does she turn to Snoke for answers after Luke pushes her away? Does Ren lead Rey to Snoke to destroy her and/or Snoke? Does Luke finally get off his ass and clean-up this galactic mess? I now cannot wait to find out.

On a nerdy note: Yay for finally getting a blue lightsaber against a blue sky.

Re: TEASER TRAILER VIII

Silverback Mecha King Kong walkers=tremendously stupid looking. The super-closeup of its severely "squinted eye" made me want to fire Rian on the spot. It's a three-year-old's toy besotted Wet Dream. Maybe we'll be lucky enough for the always unoriginal Abrams' grand automotized-monster in Ep. 9: Mecha Godzilla. Yeah, I know, Toho's already done that, but that never stopped Abrams from aping the shit out of someone else's creation.

SO much more I want to rant about in the utterly and impossibly LAME design choices that abound. But I've done that in another thread and will instead focus on what I thought was genuinely PROMISING...

The plot...

I have to now wonder if the burning temple from Ep. 7 is from Rey's past, as it certainly appears that Kylo's in the midst of those fires with Rey. And by "those fires" I mean precisely that: the way the embers are raining down around him match what we see from a distance. Either Kylo joins Rey in that vision, or they're together at an actual location that Rey had a premonition of. It's timing in the film: it's BEFORE Rey dons the darker-toned clothing that we see and that we know she wears near the film's end. Is this encounter from when Kylo and his minions assault the island on Ach-To?

Snoke's words at the beginning: for Kylo, or for Rey?

There's a rumor that Snoke is
regenerating and rejuvenating himself by sucking the Force out of other Force Adepts.
Certainly looks like it could be true from the way he's zapping Rey at the end.

The scene of Kylo targeting his mother's capital ship looks promising. In light of Fisher's death, I hope that they kill off Leia's character in this way: it'll certainly heighten whatever dramatic point that they want to depict.

I'm very uncomfortable with how mega-overpowered Rey/Kylo are seemingly being setup for. I hope that it's not the case, but man, I don't know how they're ever going to "get around" that The Ultimate Confrontation already happened with Luke's redeeming of his father. I don't know how they can keep puffing up the new material without reducing the old material. In virtually every scene we're given, Luke looks forlorn and weak, literally a sopping wet mess and down on the ground. These depictions irritate me greatly.

Overall, though, I'll be surprised if I watch this trailer even a few more times before I see it in the theatre. That'll be a Record; the fewest viewings I've ever had for a Star Wars trailer. Honestly, I am not all that excited to see this movie. I hope that Rian can prove my severe cynicism wrong. I'll be more than happy to give him more money should he make a Believer out of me.

Well it certainly looked the part. Lots of imagery reminiscent of both the PT and OT, which is a positive thing in my opinion. I just hope Rian has really improved the characterisation/story.

Just showed my 9 year old son the trailer. He knows nothing about how I feel about what I've seen so far about Ep. 8 (I try my best to allow my children to develop their own tastes).

2/3rds of the way through it, when the action is flying high, he WALKS AWAY from the monitor. I hit the space bar to Pause it. A minute later he's walking PAST ME. "Hey, do you want to finish watching it?"

"Sure."

It finishes playing.

He WALKS AWAY without saying a word.

"What do you think bud?"

"It looks cool."

"Do you want to watch it again?"

"Eh - nah. I'm okay."

"You're sure?"

"Yeah."

Honestly, I don't blame him. He's got 30+ years less experience than me, and even he sees what's NOT there.

I'll be surprised if I ever watch this trailer again.

The plot better be FAR superior than the visuals. I can't imagine how tightly they had to choke the creativity out of their poor concept artists to deliver this dreck. I hope that they were paid well for their broken and stifled spirits. No doubt, they could've done much MUCH better than this. Even a cursory search for fan made Star Wars-inspired ships and aliens will easily supply one with designs that are heads and shoulders above what we've seen in Ep. 7 and 8.

*fingers tightly crossed that Johnson somehow delivers*

I'll eagerly accept every "Told you so" from you guys if the film turns out to be astounding.

I mean it.

Kyle, if Johnson doesn't deliver then oh well, I get to walk away from Star Wars just like I and everyone did post ROTJ in the 80's. I mean everyone pretty much stopped caring about Star Wars between 1983 to 1995 before the THX VHS rerelease that sparked its return.
