Tom Stoppard Wanted For Indy Sequel

George Lucas, Steven Spielberg and Harrison Ford the main men behind the "Indiana Jones" movies are trying to get Tom Stoppard to produce the script for the much-anticipated Indiana Jones 4, reports EmpireMagazine and Variety.

Stoppard, whose last script was for the Mick Jagger produced film "Enigma," is much in demand it seems, and the Jones trio will have to persuade him that they need him more than Stoppard's "Shakespeare in Love" collaborator John Madden who wants to work with him on the film adaptation of "Tulip Fever".

He work as script doctor and re-write uncredited on "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade"

Ford denied that he was getting too old in the tooth for the action hero role. 'There is no barrier to Indiana Jones growing older,' he told the magazine. 'It's not an age-based character.'

However Ford did concede that there may be limitations. 'We can't bang him up as much as we used to, maybe. But I guess I can pretend to have the capacity as well as I pretended before.

Producer Frank Marshall says that ongoing script changes will delay Indiana Jones 4 for at least another year. "Indiana Jones [IV] is still in the writing stage," Marshall told Sci-Fi Wire. "It's still a live project, and [producer George] Lucas is working on the script at this time."

Marshall says that Lucas is currently completing the script with another writer, whom he refused to identify. "I'd say we have about two-thirds of a great story, and now we're working on the last third," Marshall said. "We'll get our schedules coordinated, but it won't be for another year or so."

"We don't want to proceed with something that we all don't feel is worthy," Marshall adds. "Obviously, we don't want to do this movie unless it's going to be great."

I lurk at the X-Boards, but barely post seeing how there's nothing new to report. As everyone knows...script was suppose to be out long ago, but never leaked.

Just the normal stuff everyone is talking about. That the title will be announced, as well as some footage. I wouldn't be surprised if that "leaked" shot came from some sort of comic con clip that's being prepped.

I wish I could get out of LA for the weekend and go...cuz I know I'll regret come Sunday.

Don't know if this has been mentioned before re. a Star Wars connection, but last week I went to see Ian McDiarmid in the play Henry IV (at a local theartre). The play was written by Tom Stoppard... So there is definatley a connection here.

In 1976, Daniels had only been acting for two years when he took the part of C-3PO in Star Wars. He originally refused to see the director George Lucas and had to be strong-armed into a meeting by his agent.
"Just call me stupid," he suggests.


When that contract ended he added his name to the unemployment register. Two hours later he was called to join Britain's National Theater, young Vic Company. The next eighteen months were taken up with touring Shakespeare productions in Europe and appearing at the theater's home base in London. It was whilst he was playing Guildenstern in Tom Stoppard's Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead in London's West End that he got the call.

When AICN wrote about the possiblity of Stoppard being the secret co-writer of Ep3 some months ago, I read an interesting note. They said it's good that he's "non-guild". Does anybody know why, or what is the bearing of being non-guild?

it means he doesn't have to be officially credited as a writer on ep3. When you're a member of the WGA there are stipulations etc on when credit needs to be assigned...which means he would've had to be...and I don't think Lucas wants that since it seems to be that he's taking sole credit.

It means that in the 80's GL told the director's guild to take a flying leap and renounced his membership.

As an effect of that, it's difficult for him to sign Guild members (acting, directing, screenwriting, etc) now days. This is why there's a reliance on non-US players in the prequels for many jobs.

Read the book "Empire Building" sometime. It has a lot of goofy LF history/trivia info in it.

But I would think, Stoppard is a strong name to make some prestige for the film.
