Revenge of the Sith Trailer Description
Posted By Scott on January 20, 2005

A reliable source sent in this description of the next Star Wars Episode III - Revenge of the Sith trailer:

The trailer begins with the following exchange:

Palpatine: "The Dark Side of the Force is the pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural."

Anakin: "Is it possible to learn this power?"

Palpatine: "Not from a Jedi."

We are then introduced to the political maneuvering of Palpatine, Obi-Wan and Mace Windu. All of them actually want to use Anakin as a pawn in their game (Palpatine makes Anakin his "personal representative on the Jedi Council" while Obi-Wan wants him to "report on all the Chancellor's dealings"). The first minute or so is surprisingly heavy on dialogue and consists mostly of shots of various characters speaking to each other (intercut with short glimpses of evil droids, space battles etc.). We even see how Mace Windu and three other Jedi attempt to arrest Palpatine (he grabs the lightsaber and confronts them). When Mace Windu tells Anakin "You are on this council but we do not grant you the rank of Master", Anakin loses it and joins the Dark Side (Sidious: "Every single Jedi is now an enemy of the Republic"). At least that's how the trailer makes it look.

Then the more "visual" half starts with some very neat scenes like a low angle shot of Anakin marching in front of a Clone trooper army. We see Wookiees on some kind of war machine, the duel in the volcano field, gigantic 10-wheel military transports and actual destruction of the Senate chamber. Everything is very dramatic, several deaths are implied, Padme is seen crying loudly and music from the Emperor duel (ROTJ) is heard.

Overall, the first half of the trailer is surprisingly specific, making no sense whatsoever to people who don't know Star Wars well. The second half is very dark and dramatic, but with lots of action. Bad guys (apart from Sidious) only appear for a fraction of a second and have no lines. The final seconds consist of Obi-Wan shouting "You were the chosen one!", fighting Anakin while both dangle from some ropes/wires. After the closing titles, there is a bonus shot of Vader and Sidious standing side by side, accompanied by Vader's breathing.

This is a preliminary version with effects and sound not quite finalized. One part of the trailer is actually without music (either for dramatic effect or John Williams' new score will be inserted here?). The length is little under 2:30.

When further questioned about the "evil droid", our source confirmed that there wasn't a clear shot of General Grievous but there was one of the bodyguards:

There is some evil-looking humanoid droid with a cape around his head and torso, flanked by two classic battledroids (from Episode I). He seems to hold a lance in his hand. Later, Obi-Wan is seen swordfighting with a humanoid droid but he's only seen from back and moving quickly. (I'm 90% certain it IS Grievous, but it's extremely short and quick shot.) Anyway, both of these shots are VERY brief (about half second).

One of the shots depicts Obi-Wan being surrounded by dozens of droids. Some of them look different and wear capes, maybe one of them is Grievous. But it's very wide shot, the characters are small.

If this is true it will be awesome.

If this is fan-creation, he did a good job with restraining himself in the descriptions, it just didn´t sound like fanfluff.

I’m not very knowledgeable regarding the film industry. Doesn’t this teaser/trailer sound like it has been put together way too early? At least for a March release? If I remember correctly, most of the trailers were being worked on and put together up until the last moment. If that’s the case, this trailer is probably coming way before March, or the report is false. I really don’t have a strong leaning towards either side at this point. I hope some of the informed cats step up and confirm or refute this soon though. I hope it’s real, it sounds pretty good.

This isn't a teaser trailer, this has to be the theater trailer. anyone know whats coming out in march that GL might attach it to?

I am kind of surprised at how much is given away in this, it sounds more like a spoiler than a trailer.

The only time I can think of Anakin marching with Clone troopers would be on the way to the Temple. :heavymetal:

A Star Wars trailer would have to be put together well in advance to its debut, just for the fact that there's so much Visual FX work to be done.

AICN before or during CHUD, I think. Unless they do the same old "four weeks later"-routine. :whateva:

I vote as a sceptic on this one; but, a trailer description at this point wouldn't be out of the realm of possibilities because of:

a) there could be a "January" trailer in the works. TPM didn't have one, but AotC did. The Forbidden Love trailer came out of nowhere. No advance warning, it just popped up on the net one Thursday or Friday night. Potentially a spoiler leak could occur as a trailer is prepped for onlne posting or print duplication for theaters. So, it's possible.

b) there is a trailer due to be on the Clone Wars cartoon DVDs in March. If this included trailer isn't the one from November, a completed version of trailer and DVD would be heading for pressing about three months in advance. Hell, I had an actual RotK DVD the second week in January for a March release. A leak at replication would be entirely possible.

I don't necessarily know if this is true because it's hazy on the specifics other than what has already been seen or known. Confirmation of the first line of dialog will give this report more credibility. Unless the source is from inside Lucasfilm, a trailer description would be hard to get unless it was one of the above.

It's not like a trailer is the same as stills used in Topps trading cards.

I don't have the best memory, and I'll freely admit that, but I definitely remember reports BEFORE November that we'd be getting three trailers in November (Forbidden Love was in November, not January). No one believed it at the time, because it was without precedent, but once Breathing came out, and Mystery was announced for the weekend after, Forbidden Love was certainly not a surprise. The OS probably announced it even.

Tern, maybe i've missed something but i'm sure that in December (when the HC's were practically every day) you had said that we would find out exactly why the Emperor believed that Anakin's offspring would be a threat to him. Is it as simple as Palpatine knowing that Vader would likely try to form an alliance with Luke/Leia and oust him (as we saw him attempt in ESB?) Or is there some other reason we are as yet unaware of? Are there other secrets in the Skywalker family that you have not spilled as yet? Just curious....

Vanda,
I think it will be PG-13 so many signs have pointed to it including a recent RM quote. It can only help the dialog in the sence the theme will be adult such as, Marriage, Having kids while dying, Murding the young, Wife choking, Betrayal, oh and a lava dip for are supposed PT hero.

I don't disagree with your evaluation. I was just pointing out that it's not yet fact that ROTS is PG-13. ;)

Is the March trailer going to be first in a series up until the final day or are going to be getting the last version until May 19?

Maybe 1 or 2 more between March & May? Each may show different scenes from the movie?

With the marketing campaigns that LFL likes to run before these films I don't think the one in March will likely be the last trailer.

I particularly like the part of the Obi dialogue.. the "You were the chosen one!" part.

It's another character point for Obi in the OT. He believes that the Jedi are, in fact, doomed, because he believed Anakin was the chosen one and that got fucked up.

Anyhow, I also just like that there's duel dialogue.

I think the term 'chosen one', 'one' or whatever has been overused in movies and TV.

Whenever I hear 'the chosen one' I always think of Moe spotting Homer's birthmark in the Stonecutter episode.

Anyway, I can't wait to see how this trailer turns out.

I've always thought that when audiences hear JEJ doing Vaders voice the excitement would really kick in, so perhaps there'll be another large trailer after this one?

BTW,do you have to install that 'InterActual' viewer crap to see any SW DVD on-line stuff? What kinda stuff do they show when the DVD links to the exclusive web content ("Exclusive Web Content"-drool aaarraaghhhguhhhh!!)

"I do want to specify, even if it's off topic, that HE WAS NOT THE PERSON THAT LEAKED EPISODE II to KNOWLES. This keeps floating around, and has even been repeated by LFL employee Tom Hodges. This is faulty information. Foley never leaked the movie to Knowles."

So who did? Actually, my money is on someone at Fox whose job it is to build buzz. The screening was studio-sanctioned, even LFL may have known about it. I conversed with Harry Knowles once upon a time when I lived in Hollywood, and the very next day he was calling my house telling me to go to the Paramount lot to see a test screening. At first, they weren't going to let me in because I was 28 and not in the 18-24 demographic. Then I gave them my name and told them I was there from AICN. A couple of minutes went by, and then I was allowed in.

The studios are complicit with "leaks" to spoiler sites, they use AICN as a marketing tool.

What makes more sense? A top secret leaker from LFL gets a hold of the rough cut of Episode II and tracks down Harry Knowles and shows it to him? Or Harry is out in Los Angeles, is approached by reps from 20th Century Fox, is shown the rough cut to help build buzz (and Harry raves his fool head off about it), and then Harry lies about who showed him the footage, how, and when, all to cover up the fingerprints of the studio plant and to help build up his own mystique?

AICN is dirty, you can't believe a single thing that comes out of Harry Knowles' mouth. This is the guy who posted over a dozen fake spy reports for "Gods and Monsters", all of which were written by his own hand, but passed off to his readers as rave reviews coming in from multiple individuals. This is the guy who lied repeatedly about how he came by information stolen from a private citizen's home computer during that whole Oscar scandal back in 2000. He changed his story three times - even posted instructions on how everyone else could hack in to the same computer -- before he finally blamed it all on someone else.

The whole site was built on the decision of Sony to not sue the crap out of Knowles for the leak of Starship Troopers animatics. Instead, Sony decided to make Harry their bitch, to USE him for their marketing efforts. The rest of the studios have followed suit. Knowles could be bought, and he repeatedly demonstrates that he can and will be bought.

20th Century Fox or LucasFilm themselves showed "Attack of the Clones" to Knowles, not some kid with a laptop. Don't believe a damn thing Harry says otherwise.
