MF DarthFirst • The Revenge Of the Sith DVD & Deleted Scenes

Hi all.

Sorry, shoulda posted a few weeks ago but been crazy busy. Not sure what information is out there re: the DVD, so feel free to ask away.

I'm guessing the two main questions are the film itself and the deleted scenes. The film itself appears to be the same as the theatrical cut. Although I haven't sat down and watched it through, just fast forwarded through it.

There are six deleted scenes:
    Shaak Ti killed by Grievous
    Rebellion meeting in Bail's office
    Rebellion meeting in Padme's apartment
    Rebellion confront Palpatine
A Plot to destroy the Jedi (As referred to on Hyperspace.)
Exiled to Dagobah (YES it's true!)

Excellent, DF! Is the Shaak Ti scene just her death or does it include the leaking Fuel Chamber portion too?

Obvious question: What did you think of the deleted scenes? What about the doco's?

The deleted scenes are okay. You can see why they were deleted. The Yoda on Dagobah one is great, but is very short and comprises of only a few shots:

- Pod approaching planet
- Pod entering atmosphere
- Wide shot of Dagobah clearing with pod landing
- Door opening and Yoda looking depressed

Yes the Shaak Ti scene includes the Obi-Wan/Anakin fuel chamber sequence, however it's only partially complete - much of this bit is still anamatics. Strange that they didn't finish this sequence to the same standards as everything else but I guess it's a lot of work.

The Shaak scene is very powerful and IMHO really should have been in the film.

Rebellion scenes are dull (apart from Ian Mc in the confrontation scene). However nice to see what a great job Genevieve O'Reilly did as Mon Mothma, she's spot on.

Documentaries are okay, overall actually I found the DVD release disappointing. It's just not as comprehensive as I would have liked. Feels like it's missing something; though I guess we were spoiled by 'The Beginning' documentary way back when.

The longest doc is the 'Within A Minute' thing, which is okay, but only concentrates on a short sequence of the Obi-Wan/Vader battle, and therefore we miss out on seeing lots of other things. I would've been more interested in hearing more from Ian on Sidious, he's very poorly represented on here (apart from a few amusing pics in the photo gallery).

The Episode I Yoda footage is great, and is included in one of the docs. Just the short "fear leads to anger" speech.

No I won't be posting a rip.

DarthFirst great to see you old friend. It's sorta  to know that you had the DVD for awhile now.

When you have the time and/or inclination please post screenshots - especially Dagobah :? and Grievous penetrating Shaak Ti.

Thanks for the update DF.

How does the movie look? Is it a great transfer and is the sound good or did they fuss with it ala OT and add lots of overdone storm drain type echo stuff (hope not)?

Also had a chance to listen to the commentary? Any revelations there?

Surprising to hear animatics are a part of the deleted scenes. (although the senate shot in the "Padme addresses the senate" one from AOTC looked pretty unfinished).

Thanks again for the info.

Is the Qui-Gon scene mentioned specifically by anyone at any point on the audio commentary or disc 2?

And the Hyperspace SIGGRAPH ILM reel showed a few seconds of finished footage not in the film before Palpatine rushes Kit Fisto and Mace Windu. Is this scene changed in any way as far as you can tell?

And finally, is the music in the deleted scenes all new?

is the Rebellion confrontation scene the one where Anakin is standing by Palpatine's side?

I am most disappointed in the DVD news. It sounds like they really skimped big time. There is no excuse for them not to provide additional deleted footage. Even if it's not edited back into the film, it should still be made available. I am not so concerned about the expensive action scenes, which would be great, but rather the character development scenes. Or maybe by including this stuff, GL would be revealing the flaws in his original cut of the film and so he figures he'll just do away with them completely?

Thanks for the info, DarthFirst - as much as I wanted to see a Qui-Gon scene, I didn't expect it wouldn't be there. I would like to see the scenes mentioned though. :heavymetal:

I'd also like there to be more bonus features. I'm just glad that I'll have the full set ... at least until GL's next edit. :whateva:

Yeah the Chosen One featurette is okay, but really, if it wasn't for the webdocs (which most of us have seen before), this release would really seem far from comprehensive. Ep 3 was begging for another behind-the-scenes-ala-The-beginning doco. Shame we didn't get it. Don't get me wrong, Within A Minute is okay, it's just not great. The fact that it focuses solely on a minute of the end saber fight sequence means that you miss out on a lot of potential participants. On this DVD there's very little from Portman, very little from McDiarmid. I would've liked to hear what they had to say about completing the saga in depth.

Transfer; yep as expected it's superb.

Deleted scenes use music already created for the saga, far as I can tell. No new music as far as I was aware.

Will post a few screengrabs from the deleted scenes within the next day.

Persoanlly, I still fail to see how the Dagobah scene could be deemed "important"...

Hmmm...
When you say "partially complete" - do you mean the Fuel Room sequence, or Shaak-Ti's death, or the whole scene?
Surely we don't have her being stabbed by a work-in-progress, wireframe Grievous!?

Sounds great, I was afraid they weren't going to include the Dagobah scene. Everything else is just as I expected, more political scenes, and one Grevious scene. Only dissapointment is the lack of the Qui-Gon scene, but after a while, it's time to accept the truth.

BTW, I hope this time around, there's no WIP conspiracy theories.

While the number of deleted scenes and special features are a little dissapointing I'm not that upset about it. After all, Lucas will be releasing the entire saga together on DVD with new special features. He was probably saving some deleted scenes and featurettes for that future release. I read somewhere that Lucasfilm is already gathering materials from their archives for that release. We probably won't have to wait too long for it (2006 sometime?). Hopefully that edition will have all of the special features that most of us are looking for.

Since I would be buying this DVD on opening day even if it was a "bare bones" release, I can't say I'm too disappointed about the special features. Sure, I'd like to have another doc as good as "The Beginning" and it would be great if a lot of the stuff that got cut was added back into the film(longer opening space battle, extended Anakin/Obi-Wan duel, etc.), but overall I'll just be happy to have the film on DVD. Hopefully, Lucas is saving a lot of the REALLY good stuff for the box set in 2007. He knows "sheep" like me will buy this movie and the others all over again.

Sounds great, DarthFirst.

One Question:

Does Lucas say on the commentary if Palpatine allowed Mace to defeat him or if Mace defeated him legitimately? Does Lucas even touch this subject or do we get to hear how the effects were done for the glass breaking. :whateva:

As long as they haven't put any incomplete deleted scenes back into the main feature like they did with Episode I I'll be happy. I must be the only person on earth who goes insane with rage when I see that horrific untextured Sebulba appear slap bang in the middle of a film that had perfect effects in its theatrical run.

Seriously, thanks for the info. Please try to post a full resolution screen capture of one of the brighter scenes with a lot of contrast. I want to see if there is any edge enhancement applied. Maybe something off of the Senate's landing platform or in the hallway of the Tantive.

This thing hopefully has an equal transfer to AotC and doesn't end up in the mess that was TPM.

Why would edge enhancement be applied to DVD video that is taken directly from the source digital video?

Hey Darth First, are you talking about CG Yoda, completely textured and such...for TPM? Or did not they not completely texturize it...

Wow, that's just awesome...either way really.

And what is this 'plot to destroy the jedi' deleted scene? Where does it take place?

Why? That's a good question... why is it there in the first place? Oh, it's to make the image look "sharper" at smaller screen sizes.

The answer in the RotS senario is that it "shouldn't" have any. If it's done the same way as AotC, then it should be exempt from any mastering processing - save MPEG artifacts, which can lead to the edge enhancement type artifacts.

AotC had a "smidgen" of enhancement/MPEG artifacts - not a lot, just enough to be seen at the top and bottom of the 2.40:1 bars - not, in visable in image itself.

I'm confident that RotS will look fabuloso on my 8ft wide screen... it's just seeing's believing. A nice bright screenshot will satisfy.

These deleted scenes should look pretty good effects wise, since a few of them were cut after ILM had completed them. The Dagobah scene, Bail's office and possibly the senators scene in Palps office were such scenes.

First off DarthFirst is on dialup on a laptop so that is why there are no videos or rips forthcoming. DF attempted to upload them to photobucket but they were automatically resized down .

So here are the small versions. Larger ones are upcoming when we work on getting proper hosting DarthFirst is comfortable with. In fact I'll get DF to email me the originals.
