I have the DVD and I’m still seeing the same thing. I can’t turn up the contrast and brightness enough to make the saber red without the picture looking truly wacky. Is this because the old color differences are resolution by the DVD transfer?

What I’m not getting is the fact that when I set up my TV to the THX calibrator on the DVD’s, the new DVD saber is pink but the VHS version isn’t. This confuses me. Is it because I am watching a PAL DVD on my NTSC television? Anyways when I insert the VHS copy of Jedi Special Edition, the saber doesn’t come up nearly as pink as the DVD.

I suppose this is just the excellent transfer with its vibrant colors showcasing something the VHS can’t?

I’m not saying your post was wrong in anyway. I want to know where I’m going wrong.

I used PSP7 for this. Brightness up by 20, contrast up a bit more. Doesn't look great, but it's good enough for people to stop bitching.

I donloaded the ROTJ on the first page I then sent it to a compressed folder. I there extracted the files and came up with Media player version. It said it's format was not supported because it still said torrent. I do I get torrent of of there?

After reading the "1st RIP" thread, you would think that the outcome (Lightsabers fixed or not) is going to have an impact on peoples day to day lives. For me, the fact is the OT still rocks improved saber effects or not.

ok. I meant first page on the where da movies at thread. when I dl-ed it. It didn't recognize the file. I opened it with media player and it said file not suppoted. I went ahead anyways and sent it to a compressed folder and extracted the files. When I finished it left a media player version of the torrent but my media player won't read it. It's a .torrent file and I know that's why it isn't playing. What do I do?

He's right, I've watched it on a 19" and my HD projection TV, both calibrated for proper color with a THX calibration disc. Every other thing int he film looks fine except those saber shots. Any switch or problem in brightness/contrast is on the authoring end, NOT my player or TV. Turning up the brightness for 15 shots will fuck up the rest of the mvoie, plus any other movies I watch. it's unacceptable that some pissant intern didn't match their settings with the rest of the touch-up team. Whether Sam is right and the pink hue was there originally matters not, since LFL should be keeping the color relatively consistent between shots. The white core FUCKING DISAPPEARS for many, many shots. How the FUCK do they not notice that on what is probably the theater equipment in the world?

To summarize: Great there's a solution to the saber problem, but fuck you if you think I'm going to watch a washed out movie to see 'em like their supposed to be. I still say WIP until I have the disc in hand with a 2004 copyright.

I just think it leaked off of a computer whos brightness and contrast was low and since only copys of that have been made even on HDTV the quality will stay the same and the pink will still be there. So for that to be fixed you're going to have to wait for another version to leak or to buy it on DVD because I highly doubt that the editing team would miss something like that.

Indeed, I just watched my own copy of the 97 SE ROTJ, and the pink Vader saber is there in the same instances as the new 04 version. It's maybe not as noticeable in the 97 version because overall the 04 looks so clean and vibrant in comparison, but THE PINK SABER IS THERE. For some reason they decided not to touch up the sabers in some sequences, and that's that.

EDIT: It's funny how I never noticed it until I started reading about all this shit on various forums.

In order to get the sabers to look like they should I have to significantly change my brightness and contrast settings. After making the proper adjustments I restarted the video and was immediately greeted by washed out picture and blooming colors. Don't believe me? Make the proper adjustments on the second avi that came with the XVID, then restart it (it should be at the point where Chewie is approaching the ewok trap). Post-"adjustment" you COMPLETELY FUCKING LOSE 3P0 in the glare from his gold covering. YOU CAN'T TELL WHO HE IS.

And the sabers aren't even the only problem. Go take a look at the scene where Han hands over the falcon to Lando. The shots in that scene are so poorly color-timed that Lando's outfit changes from yellow to blue to yellow!

That is AMATUER HOUR BULLSHIT I say, until I hold the discs in my hand.

Just watched it, and they are definately pinkish... it's a shame, because later in the scene you can tell they didn't screw with the color. The moment Luke goes ape on Vader, they are still blood red.

HA HA... maybe this error will overshadow the Greedo debacle.

If the saber was the wrong colour in every scene, then I could understand that twiddling with the picture setup would correct this.
But it isn't.
Also, the rest of the film looks so damn good, so I can't believe it's a poor master/conversion/etc.

I've seen plenty of rips, but I can't remember one where the colour of one object changes from scene to scene because of any PAL/NTSC/conversion issues.

Let's just face it that the saber is unfixed/fixed weirdly/meant to look that way. Not because it's a WIP, work print, from a dodgy source, poorly set up pc, poorly set up TV, or Darth's mood sometimes errs on the feminine side.

You know, until yesterday, I had never even seen any films of the OT in 16x9. All I knew was the craptacular pan-n-scan versions I'd seen on TV or on VHS cassette.

Some of us can't afford 6-foot-wide HDTVs or Plasma monitors or projection systems. Some of us couldn't get laserdiscs in our markets, much less locate decent rips of the films.

I got to see RETURN OF THE JEDI in widescreen, and in higher clarity and resolution than I had EVER seen it before. Who gives a flying FUCK about pink lightsabers or compression artifacts or matte lines? I'm just thankful that the movie now looks clear enough for that kind of stuff to be noticeable.

The only thing I'm unhappy about is that we're not getting the Original Cuts in this quality. I'd suffer through all the jump-cuts and color issues and matte lines in the world to see Han lay the unprovocated smack down on Greedo.

When Lucas did Star Wars and finally got a studio to back him (20th Century Fox), the deal that was made is as follows.

20th Century Fox OWNS Star Wars Episode IV. Lucas has rights to the sequels/prequels, and ALL merchandising rights. 20th Century Fox laughed in his face and gave him the deal.

Now Since Lucas does not own Episode IV does he not have to get permission to make changes to it.

And what about the other changes does he not have to get permission from Kershner, or the estate of Sebeastian Shaw?

I would imagine such a deal would only extend to theatrical releases. Home video would be considered "merchandise". Besides...Fox knew that sending STAR WARS back to theaters is money in the bank. If they refused to let Lucas redo his film, he would refuse any future theatrical rereleases, which would mean Fox couldn't capitalize on it.

He doesn't need the estate of Sebastian Shaw's permission to CUT HIS IMAGE OUT of a film. If Lucas wanted to use his image elsewhere, it would be needed. But not to remove it. No more than Wil Wheaton's permission was needed when his cameo was cut from STAR TREK 10.

Nor does Lucas need Kirshner or Marquand's permissions to re-edit their films because, as producer and copyright owner, he has final say over the projects. He is also the writer on all the films. Not a lot of films where the WRITER gets final say, usually it's the director, who gets overruled by the producer. Lucas doesn't need permission from Kirshner any more than Fox needed permission from David Fincher to butcher ALIEN 3.

Go download Dr. Gonzos Laser Disc rips then, 4gig + dvds, wide screen, better looking then vhs, but not quite dvd qualitiy. Very nice however...

I plan on putting the new DVDs into Final Cut Pro and doing exactly that. Since I have a dual-layer burner I can make my own and not lose much quality. Hell, since I use a PC to watch my movies I don't even need to re-encode it at all.

Well, I live in Georgia (the state, not the country) but in honesty the only major retailers around here are Wal-Mart, K-Mart and Target...when's the last time you saw any of them carrying widescreen ANYTHING? By the time we got places like Circuit City and Best Buy here, VHS was already going the way of the dodo. Hell, the Circuit City where I worked never even STOCKED prerecorded VHS.

I probably could have ordered the movies had I really wanted them, but Laserdisc was a rarity around here so they would have been VHS anyway. But I guess it doesn't matter. Now that the DVDs are out and I can get Gonzo's LD rips, watching a pan & scan VHS of the OT is gonna be like watching porn when you're married to a bisexual nymphomaniacal supermodel.
