The Special Special Edition Woes

So I became a fan in '97 with the SEs. What's kind of odd is as I watch the DVDs everyday--literally--I feel sort of sad when I see the new Jabba. I can see where the fans who are totally against the SEs are coming from. I think it's funny to miss the 97 SEs.

The OT SEs came out when I was 8. They were awesome. They came out in a time that was soooo similar to what it was like in '77. For me, my parents had divorced and I had yet to find anything to turn me back into a little kid. It was an weird time.

So when I ran the videos almost everyday and played with the figures and colored the coloring books, it was the funnest time of my life. And the new ones take a little bit of that away. Not much, but a little. Anyone else miss the SEs like I do? Am I the youngest guy on here??

Your statements are very interesting. It's funny how they mirror the other cats that want the vintage trilogy released on DVD. I think your feelings about it are normal. Nostalgia isn’t something that just affects 40 year old guys that miss the old days when they still got laid. I think it’s important to realize that nostalgia is important but it’s only the ghost of a feeling that can still be recalled. A lot of people are ruining their 2004 DVD experience while they obsess about the vintage trilogy. In 5 or 10 years, a lot of people will miss 2004 and the fun they had with these versions.

Those being said, collect them all. I have the vintage trilogy on DVD-R. Sure, it doesn’t look as good as these new pristine 2004 editions. But it didn’t look that good when I was 5 years old watching it at the Drive-In or watching my VHS in 1986. The grain, the quality, the sound, is all part of the nostalgia for me. I also have the 1997 edition on DVD-R.

A lot of people don’t agree with my perspective on this. My perspective works for me wonderfully. With every new edition I have something to add to my collection. I think its fun. Star Wars being a cultural phenomenon and all that has made some people take it so seriously they don’t enjoy it. The most important thing is to have fun with your hobbies.

You will probably get a part time job pretty soon (your about 15 right?) and be able to buy a few sets off eBay for $30 Or you can probably just get someone to burn you a copy at cost (which is probably $2 for a DVD-R and then shipping cost).

Honestly, I think George Lucas should release the original versions. I don't see why not? Sure he can say those weren't done and were horrible, and he has his rights and he'll stand by them, but there is really no reason why he shouldn't.




And he should release the 1997 SEs. Just for me.

Exactly, lets just leave this as a thread to people who grew up with the SE's and remember them fondly(I actually bought the Faces set only a few months before the SE's were out, so I really grew up with both).

This thread is odd. I truly miss the SEs I grew up with. I don't think George Lucas knows it or was expecting it, but it's true. I wish I were eight again. I don't like being fifteen. It's too awkward. I'm not a director yet, and I'm no longer a little kid who can feel no shame walking into a Toys R Us and spending their allowance on action figures.

Back on topic, I've enjoyed every iteration of the saga so far, and I look forward to what the future holds for these films. It's kinda cool, that something I grew up with is still finding its final form almost 30 years later.

For the record, I was 6 when Star Wars came out but didn't see it until I was 9... perfect age for that. I have to admit when my parents first brought me to see it, it was at a Drive In theater. It was one of those double-feature kind of things, so we had to sit through a different movie first (My Body Guard). My brother (who was 7) and I both fell asleep in the back seet just as the fox logo appeared so we didn't get to really see it. I ended up remembering "My Body Guard" more.

Ah well... so they eventually brought us to a real theater and man... I was in pure bliss when that first shot of the Star Destroyer first came overhead.

The cool thing? We had no idea that there was a sequel being made. In those days sequels didn't happen as an "expected" thing after a successful first. So the following summer when Empire came out... my brother and I were completely blown away. Anyway... good memories.

I'm old like Zig and ikelleigh. I was three when SW appeared and, according to my mother's memory, it was the first film I ever sat all the way through. I think I remember the toys better than that first show, but I do remember seeing it twice the following year during the re-release pretty well. I also remember seeing the SWHS pretty clearly.

I was also pissed off at Darth Vader for lying to luke in '80 (I was 6), excited for that "new movie with Han Solo in it" in '81 (so excited that I read the book right afterward) and then thought the Ewoks were "really cool" in '83. (When I was 9).

I never realized that there was such a rush of young fans recently. Now I'm just another one of those "aging fans" at 30. <sniff>

I was 9 the first time I saw Star Wars (1994-95ish). I still remember the first time I saw it when my mom rented me Star Wars on VHS. It was such a profound experience. I was 11 when the SE came out.

I think I was about 7 when I first saw Star Wars on video, 10 when SE came out. I loved the films. Funnily ROTJ was the one I found myself watching most as a kid. and it's probably the one I watch least now...

Wow... cool thread. I thought the majority of people here were from my age group (I was born in '77). I was very surprised to find out that not only is half of everyone here younger than I assumed, but that their first Star Wars experience was with the SE's.

It's actually nice to know that, regardless of which version people prefer, Star Wars has accomplished what it set out to do, which is to be a multi-generational epic.

Just this year, I found out that my mom took me to see ROTJ when I was 3 back in 83. I have no recollection of the event and it amazes me to find that out all these years later.

My earliest memory of Star Wars is when I was about 3 or so. My dad and two brothers had gone to see ROTJ in a theater. I stayed at home with my mom. The reason it stands out in my mind is because a tornado hit our side of town. So in my young mind, I somehow connected the tornado with my missing family members and "star wars"... so I figured that all the havoc resulting from the tornado was related to this "star wars" business.

It made sense at the time.

And BTW, this is my earliest memory, I can't recall anything substantial past that.

Wow, what a digression! Anyway, I saw ANH all the way through when I was about 9 or 10 and liked it the most of the OT but they were all good. And took in the '97 SE's. However, I didn't really *care* about SW until I saw Episode One. And then I was a FAN.

Exactly. The '97 Jabba was horrible. But at the time, it was the coolest thing I'd ever seen.

Like I said, those movies were my childhood, same as the '77 kids. I just liked looking at the undefined, wobbly Jabba.
