Why must Luke confront Vader

Postby StarkillerSkywalker » June 21st 2005 12:29 pm

Why does Yoda say in ROTJ that Luke must truely confront Vader? He would have been a Jedi without confronting him and Vadar could have died with the Empereror abord the DS2 when it was distroyed. When Luke did eventually fight Vader in ROTJ he was using his anger and was possibily very close to turning to the dark side. So why was it neccessary?

Because Luke's father was to important for him to just accept that his an Emperor's slave cyborg now and let go.

Without resolving his relationship with Vader Luke would never become a true Jedi. It's a bit like in those westerns ('Once upon a time in the West' actualy), a man can't go on with his life with some unfinished business on his mind.

Luke didn't need to become a true Jedi. He knew that the Emperor could hae turned him as well.

Because Lucas thought maybe RotJ wouldn't be as good if Luke found out Vader was his dad in Episode 5 and then he pusses out and lets his buddies kill em from space int he next episode?

I mean I don't know I only skimmed through "Hero with a thousand faces" but I'm pretty sure thats not part of the hero archtype.

Because if Luke hadn't confronted Vader and ultimately caused Vader to turn against the Emporer and evil altogether then Vader wouldn't be redeemed and then the entire 6 episode saga would have been all leading up to nothing.

"Duur. Why did he have to blow up the first Death Star? He coulda moved back to tatooine and started another moisture farming buisness"

Maybe because true jedis always confronts their problems, and can't leave matters unresolved?

Luke's role was to redeem his father, to draw him away from the dark side with his love. It was Vader who destroyed the Emperor and it you watch RotJ it's only after the Emperor is killed that the Rebels start to win. Vader was the balance that had to be tipped for good or bad. This is why Luke had to confront Vader, because only through his love for his son was there a chance that he could throw off the dark side.

I have no idea what you mean, but it seems you didn't understand my post as well.

Yeah, Luke wanted to confront Vader to turn him back to the good side, but I don't think it was a 'role', something he was supposed to do as a Jedi. Yoda and Obi just expected him to face the spiritual challenge of confronting and beating (in the right way) Vader, his greatest enemy since he started the path of the Jedi, to prove he can resist the dark side in himself now and act like a true Jedi. I doubt they fully realised the power of the connection between Luke and his father, that it could even lead to Vader's redemption, but also that Luke cannot fight him distanced from the knowledge of who Vader is and was. But if they did realise this and they still at this point were bullshiting Luke it would suck.

Didn't Luke explain everything when he talked to Leia? Watch the fucking movie next time.

The question was mostly about Yoda's not Luke's intentions.

I saw many Ewoks beating up Stormtroopers well before the Emperor was killed.

Yoda knew that Luke could have turned to the dark side if he confronted Vader so why did Yoda think that it neccessary for him to face him. Only a cocky Jedi would think that the only way to win the war was by another Jedi. Maybe he didn't change.

Christ, what is this, remedial reading?

Luke had to confront Vader because Vader represented everything that Luke feared -- about the Force, himself, his heritage, everything. It wasn't about killing Vader, it was about facing up to him and dealing with him. If he wasn't capable of that, he'd never become a Jedi.

Even a surface reading of the movie tells you this much. Do you need it spelled out in the opening scroll too?

I think that explained it the best, but you could have been less of an ass.

Anyway Yoda wanted Luke to face Vader because it was Yoda wanting the Jedi to go on, not neccessarly the will of the force. Yoda did grow impatient in his last days even though he knew that he would have an afterlife with the force. As I said previously Yoda hadn't changed from the PT to the OT in that he was cocky that the Jedi would win in the end even though Luke was going against the toughest of odds. He was taking a big risk because Luke could have been turned.

Blow me. You've been going on and on in this thread like you discovered some major story flaw that no one else has picked up on in the previous 22 years, when the truth is you're too fucking dense to see what's in front of your face. You could have been less of an "ass" by never starting this thread in the first place.
