Dear George: Put This Line Back In

Postby Longtime_Sunshine » June 22nd 2005 7:32 pm

...

BIGGS: Sir, Luke is the best bushpilot in the outer rim territories.

PILOT LEADER: I met your father once when I was just a boy. He was a great pilot. You'll do all right. If you've got half of your father's skill, you'll do better than all right.

LUKE: Thank you, sir. I'll try.

...

For obvious reasons.

Bushpilot on the outer rim sounds a little too suggestive for me...lol

"I remember your Dad when I was a boy... he crushed my co-pilot's throat with his mind."

Seriously though, that would be a great thing to restor, but I fear George is only going to do stuff like replace Han's blaster with a walkie talkie...etc.. :)

The line was taken out because at the time of ANH, the galaxy at large is not supposed to be aware that Luke Skywalker is Anakin's son; in fact, I'd guess that less than ten people in all of existence were aware of it. It's a cool reference, but once Vader was established as Luke's father, it didn't fit very well.

he could know of Anakin Skywalker, great Jedi Knight, and just assume that Luke was his son.

Doesn't have to know that Anakin = Vader

Right. The line doesn't have to be put back in, but it doesn't bother me that it was cut either. It's trivia, really.

Now that I think of it, was the line really "...when he was just a boy?" :monocle:

Except that in the post-PT continuity, Jedi aren't supposed to have wives or offspring. If the line hadn't made it back in before then, it certainly won't now.

The events of ESB made it necessary to establish that the details of Luke's family were kept a secret from the entire galaxy, including Luke himself. It doesn't make sense that some anonymous pilot should, in a throwaway line, display more knowledge about these things than anyone else has.

And that's why it was cut. It raises unnecessary questions and is really unimportant to the film. The scene was put in to establish that Luke knew Biggs, not that some annonymous pilot somehow knew Anakin and was able to make the connection with Luke.

I liked "You're lucky you don't taste very good", but that isn't going in. We can't have everything we want, just what Lucas wants. But I'm cool with the ANH "cut" line. The only thing really worth bitching about SE-wise anymore are the general screwups with the OT DVDs. I just want to hear LFL acknowledge the fuckery that is the lightsabers. Lucas has made it clear the OT is finished so all there's left to do is repair the general bullshit present in the current versions. Sorry to go off on a tangent there, just trying to think realisticly.

I liked "Bring my shuttle" in Empire Strikes Back... it makes Vader sound pissed off.

Of course that stuff will be fixed. LFL has to give us a reason to buy the 6-movie boxset.

I liked that line too! And the "Lucky you don't taste very good." No reason to change those lines at all.

The cutting of the "I knew your father" line is only annoying because you can see R2 jump about 2 ft in a split second while being lifted into the X-Wing. :what:

Does anyone know why the 'You're lucky you don't taste very good' line was cut? There can be no rational explanation.

I disklike the entire SE version of Vader going back to the SSD. Who gives a fuck. I can figure it out on my own how he got there. The angry 'Bring my shuttle' was much better.

And they better fix the lightsabers. How in the sam fuck did that shit get thru QC?

"You're lucky you don't taste very good" was "explained" by something like alternative audio tracks being used, for the cleanest sounding version.

I agree....just fix the damn lightsabers already....that should be the next number one priority on their change list.

I agree. Apparently "Alert my Star Destroyer...." was originally recorded for ANH (don't ask me what for) and never used. But it sounds too...."Look out! Here I come, my lesser-evil-accomplices!!!"

Dude man just tried to pick up his son, instead chasing him away and taking the kid's hand for the trouble of getting him there.

In truth there's so much wrong with these DVD's, it's actually better for me to watch whatever scene I particularly want to see, and leaving it at that.

It's not really "cut," it just isn't as clear in the newest sound mix.

That's because the sound mix on the DVD was done by an 8 year old.

Yes but the ackwardness of the lightsabers is the beauty of the 1970s/80s original versions. ;) Back then it was just awesome and we loved it.

Sure now they are shiny but part of what makes SW for me is the original cut, the way it looked and the fact that Han shot first :whatevaho:

Unlees im forgetting something, this line needs to stay cut, right?

Maybe he knew kiddie podracer Anakin on Tatooine.

Wouldn't THAT be a great last memory to have of the guy?

yeah, but Anakin is the Hero Without Fear, him and Obi-Wan are total studs.

Obi-Wan and Anakin probably met lots of kids, especially Anakin, who loved the attention

That means the rebel pilot would be in his late 20s in A New Hope. Guy sure hasn't aged well...
