Lucasfilm and Fox Home Entertainment have released artwork for a limited edition Star Wars Trilogy set. The three-disc package will be available to own in both widescreen and full screen editions from the 6th December this year. Each should set you back around $49.98. As far as we know these will be the special editions only I'm afraid! Each film will carry a THX enhanced English Dolby Digital 5.1 EX track, along with an audio commentary for each film, and easterggs.




Double dip with no bonus disc. Perhaps this is to replace the previous 4-disc set on the market with bare-bones DVDs to make way for new SE's in a couple of years.

What's this all about? Why have Lucasfilm done this? We all know he's goin to rerelease the OT in six box set so whats the point of this? Is this new box set gonna be available in the UK? Do you think maybe the'yve fixed the screw-ups in this new release?

Unless they fixed the errors in ANH...no way I'm going to pop out another $50.00 for the OT on DVD. IF they haven't fixed the errors for this set, I'll just wait until the big saga 07' box set...hopefully by then they've fixed the errors for ANH.

The 07 box set is just a rumour that going around. The only thing that has been confirmed is that there will be a box set sometime in the future, we don't know when. And that the box set to be released in December is the 1997 Special Edition releases. Which is completely pointless but i'll prob buy just to satisfy myslef just to see if there's any changes been made. There's also a rumour goign around about a PT box set to coincide with OT trilogy. That has not been confirmed. There are also rumoured to be changes made in the BIG box set, this has not been confirmed either. I think they'll focus on the OT becuase becuase of the cockup they made in the 04 release. I've also read about a rumoured digital Yoda in TPM. This one is dodgy becuase ive seen pictures of the change but some people have said it was just a test and may not be put into a future release of the TPM. We'll just have to wait and see untill Lucasfilm puts us all out of out misery and comments on all of these issues: For i think he's evil for not have done so already lol. Any info, rumour or fact about any of the issues i have discussed would be greately appreciated. Thanks.

He in ever other "re-release" something's been different. Remember the THX edition? The TIE Fighters in the asteroid chase fired blue lasers. That was a re-release, in fact that was a remaster. I just was venting that it would be stupid to repack without fixing these things.

It wouldn't surprise me if it was fixed.

The OT was also rereleased on VHS in 2000 without any changes at all. When the prequel DVD's were rereleased to coincide with Episode III in theaters, they had no changes either.

We don't get something new each time. In fact, more often than not we get the same thing as before.

"Boxed set" does not equal "massive new changes and overhauls". This is most likely a "repackaging" (you know, new cover + same content) as the 2004 set we got.

This isn't a difficult concept to follow, guys.

I remember reading something about AGI Media who designed and produced the original boxset - supposedly it was quite costly in terms of the foil board and the embossing.

This is probably just the repackaging in a cheaper box, for those not really interested in special features.

So all that this "Limited" edition offers is better cover art?

Would LucasFilm dare release another issue of these films without something new, changed, altered Etc.

I attended a Con in August where Matt Wood confirmed that there have been calls to the Archive Dept. at the Ranch to start preparing stuff for new future supplemental materials - He did not really specify as to which release (maybe all) these materials would be part of

We've got a surprise treat for you Star Wars fans today to close out the week. Sarah and I made the quick plane hop up to San Francisco yesterday, to attend the Episode III DVD press event at the Skywalker Ranch. As today marks my 38th year on this planet, it was quite the nice way to spend an afternoon. I'll tell you more about it all (and post some pictures Sarah took) on Monday.

One interesting note from the event: Producer Rick McCallum and ILM animation director Rob Coleman confirmed that Lucas has continued to digitally massage the other Star Wars films. Specifically, Coleman indicated that the puppet Yoda from Episode I has been replaced with a digital Yoda that matches the character as seen in Episodes II and III. The CG performance was specifically tailored to match to Frank Oz's puppet performance.

You'll be pleased to know that Coleman also told me, in no uncertain terms, that Oz's puppet work in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi will NEVER be replaced with CG. So you fans can rest easy. You'll get to see the new changes on a future, as-yet-unscheduled box set release of the entire Star Wars saga on DVD and/or HD.

What in the honky hell is up with Lucasfilm? If these are the exact same films as the trilogy release last year, they've gone retarded.

Or maybe they're just getting a boxset out again for anyone who wants to buy the OT on DVD and didn't last year?

There's no new features to this set, dude. They explicitly said so on starwars.com. They don't expect people who bought the set last year to procure this one.

But if you think it's money-grubbing, that's cool.

I am tired of all the outcries over this boxset, so I'm going to give you all a bit of insight to what went on behind the curtain.

First of all, let me explain why Lucas released this set. Demand was very high, and DVDs were going to be phased out in the near future. He wanted to please the fans, and give them something to tide over with until the BD/HD-DVD set hits stores in 2007.

Long story short, we had a lot to do and a very short period of time to do it in. Most of our resources were busy with Episode III (both the release and the DVD for the film). We were strained to begin with. Add putting the entire star wars trilogy on DVD with only a little bit over a year to restore and master it, and you have a race against time.

We would have liked to re-color the lightsabers, re-color Jabba, spend more time on the audio/picture, and everything else we wanted to do, but WE HAD NO TIME TO DO IT.

In addition, we only had time to work on one version of the film. We had to choose: the originals, or the special editions. Lucas chose the SE. Lucas didn't want to shell out the millions, and divert time and resources to them when they would be released in 2007.

Yes everyone, the originals are coming to BD/HD-DVD. Seeing all this moaning and groaning makes us wonder if anything will please you guys. The film team is curious if this High-Def set will fill you with joy, or make you all whine further. Why? Because we are already having to make alterations to the film. The restoration is screwing with some key elements, so we are having to go back and manually insert some things. For example, the lightsabers. Yes, they will look like the ones from Episodes I-III, because the High-Def conversion/restoration downgraded the appearence. We had to fix it, and couldn't give it that "70's look" so we were forced to make the sabers look like the more modern ones seen in the prequels.

I'm sorry for all the pain this DVD set has caused some of you. Had we had more time, things would have been different. Now we have a substantial amount of time to work with. With this additional production time, we can now include everything (such as deleted scenes) in the BD/HD-DVD set that we could not include here. You will have your original films (HAN SHOOTS FIRST) and a new directors cut (with more changes) in High Def very soon. Please be patient with us. We hope you can enjoy this set while we work to blow you away with our finished product in 2007. Thank You.

Somehow, I think that whole letter is complete crap. Especially with that right there^. Lucas never done anything to please the fans, he does what he wants because it's HIS story.

I agree with hypertext I too think this letter is pure shit. Lucas has said many times over the years that he's not going to spend the millions of dollars to restore the Thearatical Editions of the Original Trilogy because he was not satisified with the way how they turned out. He would rather spend the money to restore the "Special Edition" versions which he says are true to his original intended versions but didn't have the money back in the 70's to fully make them like he is able to now. I too believe that Lucas doesn't really give a shit about the fan base and he does what he pleases with his own movies. Can't say I blame the man.

I am quite sure though that they will fix the errors of the current DVD's for the BD/HD-DVD versions for the 2007 12 disc box set. I mean they are after all replacing Yoda with a digital puppet and no doubt will give The Phantom Menace and Attack Of The Clones digital restorations.

For all these fans that are bitching about the Thearatical Editions of the Original Trilogy not being released...well might as well get it through your thick skulls people, they will never be released. IF and I do mean IF they are then I will eat my own words. You guys got bootlegs of them, just be satisifed with those. Quit ruining this for others who perfer the current editions (like myself and many more people). There are people who actually have lives and don't keep living in the past and keep bitching about MOVIES.

Edit: On a side note will these BD/HD-DVD's be able to be playable on a regular DVD player? I really don't want to shell out alot of money for a DVD player to play these DVD's...

And only TV's with HDCP connections will display Blu-ray and HD-dvd video. If your TV only has HDMI and or component inputs, you're screwed. This is courtesy from the people of the AACP ( Advanced Access Copy Protection )
