I wrote this in response to someone dissing the Matrix a few days ago; thought it merited its own thread.
I watched Revolutions again last week for the first time since it came out , and I like the ending a whole hell of a lot more than when it came out.
Its all about balance. True balance. The Matrix acheives true balance. The supervillain and the superhero are destroyed. The good side and the bad side are forced to coexist in peace. Everything is equal. It wasn't the ending people were looking for, but it really did what it set out to do.
I think the Star Wars prophecy should've played out like the Matrix prophecy. For the Force truly to be balanced, the Sith and Jedi would have to have equal numbers/power, even if it meant both were destroyed. Anakin brings balance to the Force in ROTS, not ROTJ. The ROTJ "balance" isn't balance at all because the Jedi are in complete control. The Matrix achieves true balance when it says it does, Star Wars doesn't.
All I'm saying is that while the Matrices aren't what people wanted (I was shouting with the haters), it really doesn't get credit because it took the route of an ending that really makes sense, not the Hollywood sellout. The Force prophecy really doesn't achieve balance. If you want an epic story about balance, just look at the Matrix.
