You may want to head over to your AOTC soundtrack. Particularly track 12.

It's placement in ROTS is commonly referred to as a "needledrop" usage of music.

It's reused music from the AOTC soundtrack (the Arena). Actually, I don't think it was used in that film, although it's placement in ROTS still bothers me.

Considering most of the track wasn't used in Clones, I didn't mind it's placement in ROTS.

The ROTS needledrop music wasn't nearly as butcher-esque as AOTC's.

Me too. That was my favorite cue from the AOTC soundtrack, it's a great piece. It still bothers me that they didn't use it for the arena sequence in its entirety for AOTC but it's nice that it got resurrected for ROTS.

Funny, this question was just posed in another forum.

The piece did make it's way onto the DVD of Ep II. It's on the Geonosis menu screen.

I would have prefferred an imperial march during that scene. Why backtrack music anyway with a composer as great as Williams? I really didn't get that in AotC and it surprised me Lucas didn't learn from this in RotS.

I don't think the Imperial March would have worked that well there, to be honest. Would have been 1. cliche and 2. not right for the current tone. Anakin has just turned, he's really not down the dark path just yet, that doesn't set in until Mustafar.

Don't forget, Lucas and Williams do collaborate on what music they'll put where. Williams apparently agreed about putting that piece there.

Now, Lucas and Burtt did butcher the Clones score, No doubt. But the needledrop music they did use in ROTS (droid army theme, which really isn't that big of a deal, and this arena theme) worked really well, as opposed to Clones, which was butchered more so due to the poor editing and constant repetition of cues and tracks.

***

BTW, I like how Williams used the Imperial March in ROTS. Not too much, and not always in obvious places.

For instance, I love it's appearance in the council scene where Anakin throws a tantrum.

I didn't really mean an exact version of the march, but I know what you mean. The march is gone for an entire episode, so it would make sense for Williams to use it as little as possible.

I would still have preferred new music though, but that's just nitpicky me.

The reuse of this music was horribly inapporpriate in this instance. It was fine when they replayed it at the start of the Wookie battle. In fact, it was great. Since they had cut out a lot of great JW music in AOTC, I was happy to see some of it back in. But the marching the steps should've been something more choral and emotionally dramatic. Anakin is doing something he doesn't really want to do b/c he's made a pact with the devil. He's not on a rousing fun filled adventure to the temple. This music ALMOST ruined one of the best sequences in the whole movie. Thankfully, Order 66 music comes in shortly after and saves the day.

I did not care for the music being used in this scene either. For the marching scene I would have used a simple thwack on a bass drum every couple seconds, almost like in the Dies Irae in Verdi's Requiem. If you never heard this piece, you MUST.

I didn't like that it was looped. Anyone else find this pretty noticeable?

...like in the Dies Irae in Verdi's Requiem.

Fuck... That would have been awesome.

For anyone interested in hearing what I'm talking about, here is a link to an mp3: http://s39.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=28KJ ... GSYNLKIOZ9

I'm not referring to all the orchestra and vocal stuff, just the bass drum...you'll know it when you hear it. Nothing else but a single, solitary thwack repeated every few seconds at equal intervals when Vader and the clones are marching on the Temple. Would also be great in an extended Temple assasssination scene, the slow, precise, repeated bass drum, menacing, cold, exact, machinelike--just like Vader in assassination mode.

And I gotta say, I really wish GL showed us more than the hologram shot and the suggested murder of the younglings in the Temple...when ObiWan tells Padme about what Anakin did in killing younglings and turning to the Dark Side, it sounds like Anakin simply murdered children when in fact along with the clones he personally wiped out the Jedi at the Temple. Why not "He wiped out the Jedi at the Temple and killed all the younglings"? All of the deeds were in the recordings afterall, so Obi knew. Aside from all the sheep wishes, it would definitely make Obi's claim that he has become a "very grave threat" much more meaningful.

Ever seen the start of ROTS, just after the opening scroll?

I think you'd really like that part.

---

And I think all the Jedi are out elsewhere, engaged in the Clone Wars. The only Jedi that remain in the temple are those too young to fight and their trainers (Cin Drallig).

hahah, very funny. but the opening is not the same, the drum thwacks are in couplets, which gives it a more organized and rythmic feel. the single thwacks are empty and more menacing. or maybe it's just me...

As for the Temple, weren't at least a few of the Council members themselves still possibly in town since they were present for the last Council meeting and not shown elsewhere during the Order 66 purge? Just because Windu only brought 3 masters with him to arrest Palpatine doesn't necessarily mean there weren't others closeby. Surely GL could have arranged for Vader's Temple assault to be more challenging. Otherwise, assuming Order 66 and its aftereffects took care of most of the Jedi, which would make sense, in sum Vader would have killed some younglings, Drallig, and Old Ben (sort of), along with lopping off Luke's hand and Windu's arm. Unimpressive. Most unimpressive.
