Sound Designer Ben Burtt Leaves Lucasfilm -
05-31-05
It looks as though a veteran Indiana Jones crew member won't be sticking around for Indy 4. After nearly thirty years of work for Lucasfilm, Oscar-Winning sound designer Ben Burtt is calling it quits and has decided to move on to Pixar. Syracuse.com posted the following:
"The Syracuse native, who has been sound designer on all six 'Star Wars' films, refers to it as his "tour of duty." Almost fresh out of film school with a couple of assignments with low-budget, high-profile filmmakers Roger Corman and Russ Meyer, he was plucked by Lucas for the original 'Star Wars.'"
"It is over now and Burtt, who has won four Oscars for sound effects editing and creature and robot voice creation, is moving on. He is joining Pixar Animation. It is, he says, time for a fresh wind to blow."
Burtt was quoted by Syracuse.com saying, "The last few years have been frustrating, so I was at a point of change. But I had no official plan."
Ben Burtt was the sound designer on all three Indiana Jones films, served as editor on four chapters in the Chronicles Young Indiana Jones and directed Young Indiana Jones and the Attack of the Hawkmen. Burtt's most recent work with George Lucas was as editor and sound designer on Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith. Burtt has received four Oscars over the years for his sound design, one for Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and a Special Achievement Award at the 1982 Academy Awards for Raiders of the Lost Ark.
