Harry Potter & The Goblet of Fire

Reviews & Views for Film & Scores

Harry Potter & The Goblet of Fire

Postby Ternian » December 13th 2004 3:28 am

I just finished reading this book (someone needs an editor, ay JK).

I hope this movie is going to be as good as the PoA. Looks like JW won't be doing the score for this one - the music has been given to Patrick Doyle.

I'd say it's not quite as "dark" as Prisoner of Azkaban.....except that incident where the other kid gets blown away at the end and Harry teleports his corpse back to the school. Aside from that it's actually quite cheery in comparison.

I'm getting increasingly disillusioned with the HP films. And it's my own fault.

I read the books, and thoroughly enjoy them, (the back story is something I get a massive kick out of) and then great chunks of background stuff that (I feel) is crucial to an understanding of (primarily) motivation, are removed and basically glossed over. I understand films needing to streamline things and stuff, and so I can appreciate the attempt being made at putting them on screen... but I don't feel the books are right for it.

In Azkaban I can't understand how anyone who hasn't read the books could watch the Shrieking Shack scene and not come away with more questions than answers. I spent 30 minutes after the film explaining the missing info to my brother. He was much more satisfied after that.

GoF and OoTP will skimp furthermore on JK's wonderous world, and I can see myself ignoring those films. Shame really.

As a huge Harry Potter fan (the books). The first and second movies are horrible, as movies and as adaptations. Third was fun, and I don't have much hope for the fourth.

Books are great they don't need any editing though.

Yeah, I picked up the first one when the hype for the first book started to appear. It's a good yarn...although some of the books later get harder to get into.

But they aren't kiddish...

The actors are only young...I think Ron is the oldest and he is about 17.

And they are suppose to be in high school, GoF is equivalent to yr10 here in Australia which means they should be 16/17 years old.

I made a bargain with my wife: I would read the Potter books if she would read LOTR. I finished the first two books over a weekend, and I was tempted to break the agreement, because they were so kiddish. I started PoA, and it got immediately better. By Order of the Phoenix, you start seeing that her target audience got quite a bit older.

...next to the DT series, Potter is right up there.

I agree, WASR-10. Have you been to the top of the Dark Tower yet? Everyone I know that is into that series has not yet found time to read it, and I go bezerk wanting to discuss it.

I really haven't liked the movies so far. It's ruined my enjoyment of the books to an extent. I don't want to sound like I'm saying "Chris Columbus raped my childhood" or anything like that, but I really haven't liked them. Azkaban was okay, but still not nearly as good as the books.

The movies are awful (especially the first 2), you should really read the books. The books are infinitely better.

She also ripped off of Susan Cooper. The same time of criticism that people give J.K. can be applied to Lucas. He took established things (Campbell, Buck Rogers, other sci-fi) and combined it a new and very good way, creating a masterpiece.

The last book felt like RotS...everything seemed to go downhill really fast.

I watched the first film again the other night and there were many new things I picked up that I wasn't really aware of that have come to light since.

All good. Books are def. better.

I felt that the whole thing was kiddish. I wanted nothing to do with HP.

But, if I recall correctly, my friends and I got tickets to see Harry Potter because the star wars trailer was supposed to be attached to it. It wasn't and we left to watch another movie. but, it piqued my curiousity and I wanted to watch it to see what the kids liked in it. I thought it was really good for a kids movie, but still had no interest to read the books. When the 2nd movie came out, I kind of felt obligated to go since I'd seen the 1st one. I ended up liking it.

The theater I went to was a block away from a half priced books, so I picked up the first 4 books for a really cheap price, read them, and I've been hooked ever since.

While the first two books were definitely aimed at a younger demographic, her books have indeed gotten darker and had an older ton to them. The third through the fifth books are great reads. I always suggest reading the first two though, because it only helps flesh out the characters and the world that much more.

I love how, in the 2nd movie, after Dobby is freed, Lucious gets pissed and starts to spit out "AVADA", but Dobby hits him with a spell before he can finish it. It's not in the book, but, once you've read the 4th book and find out about the killing curse, it's a neat little addition.

I have a feeling that the next two movies will be more notable for what they leave out instead of what they keep in.

I saw this last night. Having only followed the series on screen, this installment gets my vote as Best Potter film out of the four.

That's interesting. I didn't start reading the series until after the third film and wondered what I'd have thought of this one if I hadn't already read the book.

C'mon, man, your experiences as a Star Wars fan should make you aware that die-hard fans of anything are generally full of shit. I don't frequent HP fan sites and haven't read any of the fan reviews, but I'm willing to bet that the common complaint boils down to anger that every single line of the book didn't make it into the movie. LOTR fans complained about the same thing. You have to judge a movie on its cinematic merits, not on how slavishly it followed its source material. I still think that POA was the best of the series, but this one was definitely second best. Thank God they've moved beyond the Spielberg-lite flavor that Chris Columbus brought to the series.

Well, I was really disappointed with this movie. It was way too choppy - especially the opening scenes at the World Quidditch Match and the final maze challenge. I felt the characters didn't bond anywhere near as well as they did in PoA. There were some funny moments in the middle of the movie, but the events of the Tri-Wizards tournament were disappointingly uneventful.

I much prefered Alfonso's take on Harry Potter and I look forward to his interpretation of the fifth book (which is one of my favourites). I will also look forward to the return of John Williams scoring the movie...the score sucked on GoF and the Weird Sister's music is going to age the movie quite a bit in a few years. :(
