Gas Prices Hit New High of $2.55 a Gallon

Monday August 15, 4:46 PM EDT

NEW YORK (AP) — The retail price of gasoline soared more than 18 cents last week to an average $2.55 a gallon nationwide, a new record, the Energy Department reported Monday.

The previous record high was $2.37 per gallon, established the previous week. Adjusting for inflation, retail gasoline prices peaked above $3 a gallon in 1981.

The latest weekly government survey said the average price nationwide of regular-grade gasoline rose by 18.2 cents to $2.55 per gallon, or 67.5 cents a gallon higher than the same time a year ago.

Pump prices were highest on the West Coast, averaging $2.669 a gallon, and cheapest in the Rocky Mountain region, where motorists paid on average $2.44 a gallon. In the Midwest, gas averaged $2.531 per gallon.

Record crude oil prices have continued to plague motorists at the pumps. Persistent increases in global demand were exacerbated last week by refinery problems in the United States, while a busy hurricane season in the Gulf of Mexico continues to encourage speculation.

On Monday, light sweet crude for September delivery settled 59 cents lower at $66.27 on the New York Mercantile Exchange, off from Friday's record intraday high of $67.10.

I was thinking 'oil man' like JR Ewing, but I guess even an 'oily man' would have been better than my old man was . :o

Well, they have been overly poor at least.

But yeah, these gas prices are fucking insane. I read Friday about truckers going on strike to protest thier particular bitch. http://komotv.com/stories/38525.htm

If such a thing ever went national, as rumored in the story, maybe some of these price gouging middle men would find themselves out of 'viagra' and 'depends' and take the hint.

Unfortunately, I doubt it. That would just give them an excuse to charge more for ALL goods, since none would be moving.

Where's my fueless atomic Elroy Jetson boots they promised me when I was a kid, anydamnway. This whole cars and trucks thing was supposed to be over in the 90's.

My A-Team van costs 60 dollars to fill up and my SUV costs 50 dollars to fill up. My girl's car costs 40.

Fuck oil companies. Fuck OPEC. Fuck wealthy Arab oil barons. Fuck Detroit.

It'll take a nuclear war or a cataclysmic act of God to get us off of our dependancy of petroleum.

If that is expensive, then welcome to Finland.

Gasoline costs about 1.26 euros per litre ($1.55) = $7.05 per gallon.

So it costs over 65 dollars to fill up my car. :|

I used to have a nice Mitsubitchie Mirage that got decent gas mileage. Now I've got a Buick and I might as well tap it straight into my bank account.

I wish I could get one of those hybrids. 50 miles to the gallon. :heavymetal:

Q&A: Why Are Gas Prices So High?

excerpts:

Aug 19, 2005

Q&A: Why Are Gas Prices So High?
By SEAN MUSSENDEN
Media General News Service

Gas has never been more expensive, right?

Technically, yes, but not when you consider that a dollar doesn't go as far as it once did. Adjusted for inflation, a gallon of gas hit its peak in March 1981 at $1.42, which translates to $3.13 in today's money.

What's driving up the price of gas?

Many factors but the biggest is: Gas is refined from crude oil, and the price of crude oil is spiking. In the last month, crude has gone up $10 a barrel, crossing the $60 mark for the first time. A barrel of crude has risen 50 percent in the last year. As any freshman economics student knows, when demand for a product is stronger than supply, prices go up. And right now demand for oil and gas is booming, and supplies can hardly keep pace. So prices go up.

What's driving up demand?

It's summer, and family car trips with multiple fill-ups help spur the demand for gas in the U.S., the world's No. 1 energy consumer. Demand for oil also is growing worldwide. Think about China. As it develops into a global economic powerhouse, it has a big thirst for petroleum.

Why are gas supplies tight?

One reason is the United States' limited number of refineries that turn oil into gasoline. A new refinery hasn't been built in 30 years, and half as many refineries operate today as in the 1980s. What's worse, there have been power outages and other problems at refineries this year, which have hurt gas production. President Bush wants new refineries to be built, but his Energy Department says that's unlikely, citing high cost and environmental concerns.

Another reason: Analysts fear that supplies could be reduced in the future - because of terrorist attacks in the oil-rich Middle East or worker unrest in other oil-rich countries. That helps push up prices now.

Lack of refineries and the Chinese

I like how the article starts out with the fact that it isn't really the gas prices, it's that our 'money' is becoming more and more useless.

The big problem with fossil fuels is that there is no financial incentive to eliminate them. Sure, it would be better for nature and civilization, but go tell the biggest richest companies and people in the world to work themselves out of a job, see what happens. They will pay you to shut up about your good ideas, rather than invest in research to break our dependance on thier product.

These people seem to have a lot of great ideas. But actually developing some of the good ones could eliminate multiple sectors of our current socio-economic power structure. Not that that would be a bad thing. It would just piss off a lot of rich people. And they make laws and have armies and PR.

$18 to fill up my gas can for the lawnmower is just looney-tunes however.

Georgia is at around $6 per gallon.

A lot of Southeastern states are rationing now.

Unbelievable.

I went to Walmart yesterday and when I drove in they were at $2.86. I came out and it was $2.96 and right after I filled up it went to $3.06.

Exxon's $10B fill-up: Cashing in on crunch

Quote:
Oil companies came under new fire yesterday when it emerged that ExxonMobil's profits are likely to soar above $10 billion this quarter on the back of the fuel crisis.

That's $110 million a day, and more net income than any company has ever made in a quarter. It's also a stunning 69 percent increase over the same period a year ago and a 34 percent jump from the $7.6 billion Exxon made just last quarter.

That's right. While we are paying x2 for gasoline, the cost of production has changed little.
