The crimes committed in New Orleans are taking a backseat to the political finger pointing. Post links here to articles about New Orleans citizens helping each other out since George Bush doesn't care about black ppl.

Bodies found piled in freezer at Convention Center and Child Rape

http://www.nola.com/newslogs/...
Arkansas National Guardsman Mikel Brooks stepped through the food service entrance of the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center Monday, flipped on the light at the end of his machine gun, and started pointing out bodies.

"Don't step in that blood - it's contaminated," he said. "That one with his arm sticking up in the air, he's an old man."

Then he shined the light on the smaller human figure under the white sheet next to the elderly man.

"That's a kid," he said. "There's another one in the freezer, a 7-year-old with her throat cut."

    ...

One of the bodies, they said, was a girl they estimated to be 5 years old. Though they could not confirm it, they had heard she was gang-raped.

British Tourists: "Our terrifying ordeal"

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,11069-1765482,00.html
Mr Nelson, 21, and Jane Wheeldon, 20, told The Times how they and some 50 other foreigners — many of them British backpackers — were ordered by the US Army to gather together to protect themselves from resentful locals.

“The army told us to stick in a group and for the women to sit in the middle with the men around the outside and to be ready to defend ourselves,” Mr Nelson, from Epsom, Surrey, said. “Their urgency scared us. I sat on the outside, really scared by this point, sitting waiting for God knows what. We waited and waited, I didn’t sleep. A lot of the girls had been groped.”

I sat on the outside, really scared by this point, sitting waiting for God knows what. We waited and waited, I didn’t sleep. A lot of the girls had been groped.”

Miss Wheeldon, from Carmarthen, South Wales, said that being inside the Superdome was terrifying and that she had been sexually harassed.

“The atmosphere was extremely intimidating,” the Lancaster University student said. “People stared at us all the time and men would come up to me and stroke my stomach and bottom. They would also say horrible, suggestive things. The worst time came when there was a rumour that a white man had raped a black woman. We were scared that we would be raped, robbed, or both. People were arguing, fighting and being arrested all the time.”

The SAME British Tourists AGAIN only with HOT pictures

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/...
Survivors praised the US military for protecting them but condemned British Embassy officials as 'useless' for failing to help or provide information to relatives.

Jane Wheeldon, 20, a student from Carmarthen, South Wales, said: "We were the prime target. Guys would come up and stroke your back and your tummy and your bum to find any money you had on you. Everyone was staring and it was so intimidating.

"They said, 'white people are not welcome here'. Then the looting started and the gangs were smashing up the drinks and cigarette machines."

New Orleans Police Stunned by (fellow police) Suicides

... who also lost his home in the flood waters _ looked like a zombie, like someone who hadn't slept in year, Defillo said. But so did so many on the 1,600-member force.

Officials said Monday that between 400 to 500 officers were unaccounted for, many tending to their homes or looking for their families, and some dropping out. To lessen the stress, officers were being cycled off duty and given five-day vacations in Las Vegas and Atlanta, where they also would receive counseling.

UK Sean Penn Article with some British Tourist tidbits about the Police

http://www.thisislondon.com/til/jsp/modules/Article/print.jsp?itemId=20274160

He stayed in the Ramada Hotel during and after the devastation with his wife, Sandra, and seven-year-old son Ronan. At one stage, Mr Scott, 36, had to wade through filthy water to barricade the hotel doors against looters.

He told the Liverpool Daily Post: "I couldn't describe how bad the authorities were. Just little things like taking photographs of us, as we are standing on the roof waving for help, for their own little snapshot albums.

"At one point, there were a load of girls on the roof of the hotel saying 'Can you help us?' and the policemen said 'Show us what you've got' and made signs for them to lift their T-shirts. When the girls refused, they said 'Fine' and motored off down the road in their boat."

Yeah, I saw that when it was first broadcast. That fucking fat ass bitch cop is carrying shit around the store, the reporter says that it seems everybody in the store is stealing, and she says "so are you." The reporter says, "I haven't taken anything," and the cop just walks away.

This whole fucking thing is making me ashamed to be human. When I die, I hope I come back as something more respectable, like a squirrel.

Oprah Winfrey weighs in...

http://news.yahoo.com/news?... /thisshouldnothavehappened

Winfrey's staffers went to Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas and Tennessee, looking for stories, she said, that hadn't yet made it to TV. During her travels, she became weepy, angry and sick to her stomach.

Among the most gut-wrenching: children being sexually assaulted in the Superdome, an image Eddie Compass, New Orleans' police chief, says is among those that will haunt him for life.

Mayor Ray Nagin walked away from his interview with Winfrey after getting emotional about the lack of aid. He became angry, saying that he felt other major cities would have fared much better because response time would have been swifter.

Winfrey was allowed a tour of the now-vacant Superdome, which she said had evolved from a natural disaster to a human disaster. The stench made her nauseated, even though she was wearing a mask. "This makes me so mad. This should not have happened."

Jamie Foxx, Matthew McConaughey and Faith Hill were among celebrities distributing food. While unloading a truck in Gulfport, Miss., Hill was asked by survivors to sing Amazing Grace, which she did as onlookers joined in.

Winfrey's show from the region aired the day after The Ellen DeGeneres Show dedicated its broadcast to a discussion of the hurricane's devastation. And on her show Tuesday, DeGeneres followed up by encouraging viewers to "just help the way you can. It doesn't have to be money. It can be any way that you can."

See, and to me, thats merely an example of our everyday culture, distilled and diplayed. There are sick bastards everywhere and the fact that there is a disaster going on isn't going to make them nice.

My kids are all going to learn how to kill people barehanded before they ever get to go anywhere alone. A viscious 6 year old could rip your throat out. I think once the hurricane was over, me and my family would have started swimming. Away from the not-so-Superdome, toward the boat we were going to steal.

I also wonder how many of the New Orleanders took sufficient documentation with them to establish proof of ownership to thier insurance companies (if they have one) when the water recedes. And who is going to tell them, even if they don't get compensated, that thier neighborhood is going to be bulldozed. The rotten feeling people get watching this tragedy has just started. I predict the obvious, the really ugly parts are coming up.

Katrina Takes a Toll on Truth, News Accuracy

EXCERPTS:

# Rumors supplanted accurate information and media magnified the problem. Rapes, violence and estimates of the dead were wrong.

...

The New Orleans Times-Picayune on Monday described inflated body counts, unverified "rapes," and unconfirmed sniper attacks as among examples of "scores of myths about the dome and Convention Center treated as fact by evacuees, the media and even some of New Orleans' top officials."
...

Indeed, Mayor C. Ray Nagin told a national television audience on "Oprah" three weeks ago of people "in that frickin' Superdome for five days watching dead bodies, watching hooligans killing people, raping people."

...

The wild rumors filled the vacuum and seemed to gain credence with each retelling — that an infant's body had been found in a trash can, that sharks from Lake Pontchartrain were swimming through the business district, that hundreds of bodies had been stacked in the Superdome basement.

...

Follow-up reporting has discredited reports of a 7-year-old being raped and murdered at the Superdome, roving bands of armed gang members attacking the helpless, and dozens of bodies being shoved into a freezer at the Convention Center.

...

Fox News, a day before the major evacuation of the Superdome began, issued an "alert" as talk show host Alan Colmes reiterated reports of "robberies, rapes, carjackings, riots and murder. Violent gangs are roaming the streets at night, hidden by the cover of darkness."

...

London's Evening Standard invoked the future-world fantasy film "Mad Max" to describe the scene and threw in a "Lord of the Flies" allusion for good measure.

...

Nagin and Police Chief Eddie Compass appeared on "Oprah" a few days after trouble at the Superdome had peaked.

Compass told of "the little babies getting raped" at the Superdome. And Nagin made his claim about hooligans raping and killing.

State officials this week said their counts of the dead at the city's two largest evacuation points fell far short of early rumors and news reports. Ten bodies were recovered from the Superdome and four from the Convention Center, said Bob Johannessen, spokesman for the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals.

(National Guard officials put the body count at the Superdome at six, saying the other four bodies came from the area around the stadium.)

Of the 841 recorded hurricane-related deaths in Louisiana, four are identified as gunshot victims, Johannessen said. One victim was found in the Superdome but was believed to have been brought there, and one was found at the Convention Center, he added.

I'm relieved that the reports of sharkys swimming around NO proved untrue. On another note, I would like personally kidnap Geraldo Rivera, behead him, and then post the footage on the internet.

I'm a little dissapointed that we didn't get to see sharks and alligators chomping on some hoodlum's ass...

Oh wait, there weren't really any punks running around shooting, looting, raping and pillaging. It was all just made up by the press.

Next they'll say the levees didn't really break.
