need help regarding widescreen TV's

Postby Raveers » July 27th 2006 1:39 am

Okay in the latest events regarding the OUT DVD's and such I've been thinking about seriously upgrading my 4:3 TV. I have been for a long while now since as I've stated in the OUT DVD thread that my 4:3 TV is 10+ years old.

I was looking at the widescreen TV's at Circuit City's website and I'm not really sure what one to go for. There are four that I'm looking at and wondering what one to get... I hope though I can get on Circuit City's payment plan so I can just take this home and pay on it until I own it for good, anyways...

The four TV's I was looking at are....

1: Magnavox 32'' LCD HDTV

2: Samsung 30'' Slimfit HDTV

3: Samsung 32'' LCD HDTV

Last but not least..

4: Sharp 32'' LCD HDTV

Now for those of you here who are well....hate to use the term but savvy on widescreen TV's which of those four would probably be the best one I should try to get? I am going to see if I can have my dad take me to Circuit City today and look at the TV's in person but I just would like to get some imput from you fellas.

So what are your guys' verdicts?

Edit: After much thinking, I might go with the Magnavox 32''. It's the cheapest one and I'm sure it'll look just as good as the other 3. I'll still look at all 4 if I can get my dad to take me to Circuit City tomorrow (errr today).

I have also been seriously thinking of doing this.

LCD and DLP are ok, but I keep finding myself liking the look of plasma displays better.
I have finally settled on the newest Panasonic plasma models that are just coming out this month. I'm going to get either the 37" or the 42," both of which are around $2,000. I won't be getting this until around Xmas this year or maybe even after the first of the year, and of course I'll look for the best buy I can get. Speaking of "Best Buy," I avoid that store and Circuit City like the plague, but in this case, I might go with BB since it's close to my home and I can try to talk them down in price a bit.

Here is a link to the latest Panasonic plasmas and some reviews of older models. Note the life-span of the plasma TVs. If some zit-faced saleskid tries to tell you that plasma only lasts 2 or 3 years, tell him he's full of shit. The newest plasma technology has a 60,000 hour lifespan. That's as long if not longer than any TV tube ever made:

http://www.plasmatvbuyingguide.com/plas ... smatv.html

Here's a direct link to the Panasonic TH-37PH9UK that I am most considering:

http://www.plasmatvbuyingguide.com/plas ... ph9uk.html

I'm leaning towards the 37" because of the size of the room, and of course price. Like I said, the 37" and 42" displays are in the $2K range, but the 37" is more like $1800 or so. It will end up being about $400 less expensive than the 42", and the difference is just 5 inches. I figure if I really want to watch Star Wars or Lord of the Rings on a gigantic screen, I can buy a projector from a friend of mine who sells them and hang a sheet up on the wall somewhere, rather than having a gigantic screen overpowering the room all the time.

Anyway, that's my advice. Hope this helps.

I was thinking plasma myself but I can't afford anything like that, right now. I know it's weird...but I would rather get an LCD widescreen and I've been told by a few people who have them that they're great. I don't mind going to Circuit City, I've been there before and have never been let down by them at all. Circuit City and Best Buy are really close by me but I perfer going to Circuit City for getting a TV, they are a bit cheaper to than Best Buy.

I've got Toshiba DLP. Quality is great for me and it was a great price. Doing the research that I did, I found that a DLP will keep it's color and picture longer the picture of an LCD, however the LCD has better color, and brightness. This can be a big'un when watching DVD's, but not so much with HD. Anyways you're on the right path.

I can't either at the moment, but if I wait a bit and save my cash, it will be possible.

I went back and forth for quite some time between DLP, LCD and Plasma, and finally decided this week to go with Plasma. A friend of mine has a 61" RCA DLP screen and I know someone else who got a 42" Samsung LCD, and there's just something odd about them to my eyes. I get that funky shadow/fading effect if I look at these monitors from the wrong angle.

Good luck and let us know what you end up getting!

Thanks. Ya I'll let you guys know what one I get.

By the way Magnavox is a pretty good brand, my 4:3 TV is Magnavox brand and the sucker has held up pretty well over these last 10 years. I wasn't able to go down and look at the TV's today, though I am certain I will like the Mangavox widescreen. I do have to save up the money for this one and I will starting in October. My first priority right now is getting me a new digital camera which I'll be buying in September for my b-day.

Anyways... I'm also gonna get one of those $400 home theater in a box sets at Wally World to eventually. The one I have now is one of the $100 J&E home theater in a box, it's not to bad but I definitely would like something a lot better.

Making a new post here...

It'll take 3 months for me to save up for the Magnavox 16:9 Widescreen TV which I think is definitely the one I'm gonna get.

In February I'm also gonna upgrade my home audio theater system. I only have the $100 J&E home theater in a box system right now. It's all right for $100 but I want something a lot better. So I'm gonna be getting me the Sony home theater system. My brother David has one of these, and he played the opening main sequence of AOTC when I was at his house one time (before he moved) and it sounded kick ass through that system. Better than the one I currently have now.

I'm not to sure though if I can remove the speakers from the stands....I would imagine I have the option of putting them on their stands or not... I say that because I don't have any room to place them on their stands so I'm gonna have to hang them up on the walls.

Swung by a high-end TV store a few days ago. Supposed there a 42. in plasma screen HDTV that runs 1080pi and doesn't need a reciever to get HDTV channels, cable or broadcast.

But, it costs $10,000. :(

Wow. That's a bit high for a 42".
The new Panasonic 65" plasma is also 1080p, and is about $7,000.

Yeah. I think it's because of the HD receiver. No need for a cable box to get HD channels with your cable service.

I'll stick with getting the Magnavox one. The Sony and Panasonic TV's are a bit out of my price range.

Avoid Sanyo at all costs.

It's my understanding that the Magnovox guts are built by Panasonic, so that might not be a bad way to go.

Pioneer is another brand you might want to look into.

My folks just got an Sony HDTV 1080i/p capable set I was trying to help set up. When playing an HD channel at 1080i, it has some pixelation, of course the rest of my fam can't see it, but from up close, it's definitely visible. Anybody here know what the deal with that is?

Is this a plasma, LCD or DLP monitor?

If it's just an "HD compatible" set then you are probably seeing some kind of funky analogue to HD upconversion glitch.

Try switching to 1080p (progressive instead of interlaced), if the set will allow you to do that.

I've found that the ultimate forum for these questions is www.avsforum.com

There is a ton of techno-babble there, but it has been very helpful to me.

That could be the case here. It's an LCD. Not that I know anything about HD, but the cable is coming in through a coaxial to a box, then out through an HDMI, don't you lose quality just by coming in through coaxial in the first place? Or is that assumption off base?

Thanks for the info and the link.

Just a heads up for anyone else who might've had similar probs, but I turned "DRC" off. "DRC" is suppossed to make the picture look better, but for some reason was adding all this noise and pixelation to the HD signal.

If you can swing it, get a Pioneer Elite 50in plasma. It cost $8,000 but it has 1 component, 2 HDMI ports, an digital audio port, and is super sharp. It dosen't come with speakers though. It was made for Blu Ray/HD DVD and the PS3, as it runs 1080p. :)

I don't know who your post was directed to however as I said anything above 34'' is too big for my room and too expensive for me. I actually won't be able to upgrade my home theater system for another couple of years. I got other shit coming up right now that I am making as top priorities though. Who knows maybe in a couple of years (2008ish) the Maganvox 32'' Widescreen HDTV that I'm going to get will be down in price by then. One can only hope.
