Wondering what the word was on Vista? Does anyone have it? Planning on getting it? To me it doesn't seem that big a leap from XP other than the flipping 3D tiled windows thing. I do like the Speech recognition that supposedly controls many aspects by voice commands.

So what's the verdict?

Don't plan on getting it. Especially when just about anything from Microsoft has a do not buy till we get the major bugs fixed disclamer with it.

Anyone seen that new Mac ad about pc doing a windows upgrade to vista? one of the best so far imo.

Never get the first generation of anything this includes Windows. With Windows history tends to repeat itself with first generations as hypertext stated it can be full of bugs that need to be fixed and fanned out. Even though my friend Joe upgraded to Vista and he says he hasn't any problems so far with it but I bet he will. I have Windows XP Home Edition and I'm perfectly fine with that. I have no plans on upgrading my home PC to Vista any time soon.

A story related to this.. when I bought my Samsung 40'' from Best Buy, I originally was going to buy a laptop but they didn't have any there in the store. The guys told me that they've pulled their laptops and desktop PC's from the shelves to prepare for Windows Vista. I told my brother Russ this who's the main head computer tech at a company in Salt Lake City called "Priority Dispatch" which over-sees all the technical deals for all the 911 operators around the globe and here in the US. Anyways when I told him what Best Buy was doing he sighed and stated that no one should be switching to Vista right now because it's so new. Even Dell, Toshiba all the name brand companies for laptops and PC's are switching to Vista.

So ya if you have a desktop PC or laptop or even both and have Windows XP on it currently just stick to that no point in upgrading this early.

I had the Vista.Bill.Gates version that hit the torrent sites in November. I dual booted XP and Vista for awhile, but I got rid of it because I needed the hard drive space back. The OS looks really great and has some nifty features, but I do a lot of 3d/CAD/graphic work and many of those programs don't run well on it. So I would recommend to wait until the industry catches up with new drivers and software.

I can't remember for sure but I don't even think Dell gave me the option of not having Vista on the PC I just bought. Some of the features are very cool, and I like the media center( which I know was available before vista). Only problem I am having is the lack of compatibility so far. I had XP well before it was out and I don't remember that even having this much compatibility issues. Aside from those I have not had any glitches or major issues. This should do just fine

I'm moving away from Microsoft as quick as possible. I work in I.T. and we have XP for our office staff (150+ people) and I'm tired of having to fix this shit. Personally, I'm getting a MacBook and Mac Mini this summer. I'd rather pay more to Apple than give another dime to Microsoft. And now, John Hodgman!

The only reason I would buy Vista is because I can get the ultimate version for $75 at my brother's university computer store. That being said, I wont buy it at the very least until the first service pack comes out. I would never in a million years buy a regular Dell/HP/Gateway/etc PC. I have used Macs for years (currently typing this on my 17" Core Duo iMac). I have Windows XP Home dual booted on here for the simple fact that I had need it to run some CPA exam study software that I have. It works fine, and with the Google toolbar I can do all of the things that Vista can do (such as Gadgets on the side bar, system search, etc). I also don't like that Vista is such a resource hog. I gave my install of XP on my iMac 20 gigs of HD space. It took about 5 for the install of XP and Office 2003 Pro. That is pretty reasonable, imho. Vista requires a minimum 40 gb of HD space. Like I'm going to sacrifice that much of my iMac's HD for that whopping system hog... :roll:

Vista requires a minimum of 40?? Where is that stated? The partition for windows is 10 g of which just about 5g is being used and not half i don't think is for windows. Everything has worked great. Granted I would've preferred to wait or build a machine but when your only other available computer dies then you don't really have the time. So I went with the easiest solution and it's been fine. Everything I have recorded off TV looks great, Seamonkey is working great with it. The only thing I want that isn't ready is my Firewall, Zonealarm. I like the windows Aero feature, it's actually pretty useful

I downloaded the Windows Vista Upgrade advisor off MS.com and installed it on the XP side of my iMac. It said my computer could run any version of Vista, but had a warning that a 40 gigabyte HD was required to run Vista properly. I'm assuming that it gave me that warning because, as I stated above, I only gave XP 20 gigs of space on my iMac HD. If I feel like it later, I will log into windows and post a screen of the warning for you.

Microsoft did this whole thing in Toronto to premote vista. They had a icehouse (wtf?) and a bunch of stations inside showing the different "benifits" of vista.
I asked on of the guys working there if he thought it was a blatent ripoff of OSX. He said that he had heard that so much that with all the money he's earning from this job he's buying a MacBook.
