Finally today, director George Lucas is going to be attending a special 30th Anniversary screening of Star Wars tonight at the Motion Picture Academy of Arts and Sciences in Hollywood -

Tickets are sold out, but if you are going to be attending, someone be sure to ask George if that mega bombad, 9-disc Star Wars Ultimate Box Set is going to be coming out this year on DVD. Ask him what he thinks about the whole Blu-ray/HD-DVD thing too if you get the chance. And, of course, be sure to let us know what he says.

George Lucas slipped in late and split to catch a plane following the 30th Anniversary screening hosted by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences Monday night.
Joining him were Mark Hamill, Carrie Fischer and 11 of Lucas' 22 behind-the-scene collaborators who won or were nominated for Oscars for their contributions to the 1977 classic, made for $13 millioon back in the day, according to producer Gary Kurtz.
Starboys turned out in force too, lined up around the block for the screening, but left the costumes at home. Lone exception: one woman who showed up wearing Princess Leia earmuffs she bought at Disneyland.

Lucas and company got a standing ovation at the end of the screening, and after a few minutes fielding questions, the maestro left the stage.

In the discussion, producer Gary Kurtz said that the reason they shot Star Wars in the UK was because there were no stages available in Hollywood... they were all being used by TV shows



I've read that the version shown was not the 30 year old movie, instead a digitally projected version of the master used for the '04 release. In HD, but w/ the color scheme that the DVD is known for and it's '04 sound mix

And it was just Lucas and Hamill who attended the show. It was a whole slew of legendary ILMers and crew members who worked on ANH that were in attendance of the screening. GL even made a comment about still seeing some stuff he wanted changed.

On Monday, April 23 2007, Star Wars -- now properly identified as Episode IV: A New Hope -- screened again, this time to an audience well aware of its historic impact.
