Star Wars has given me a lot of joy over the years. The films themselves were a very important part of my youth and a part of the person I grew into, in their own way. They're just great films. I love watching them to this day and being swept into that galaxy far, far away.
A decade ago, they came back in the biggest way. I remember in the late 80's and early 90's, all was very quiet on the Star Wars front. The merchandise was restricted to yard sales and flea markets; Star Wars was stuck on home video and Christmas day TV marathons. There were some novels and video games, which were cool. But then suddenly in the middle of the last decade, it all came back. It was back on store shelves, in the media and most importantly, on the big screen. The naysayers can't deny that the Special Editions were great for that sole reason: seeing them on the big screen. Lucas was quoted at the time saying that Star Wars was designed as a theatrical experience and he must have been right, because I've honestly never had a greater time watching the films.
Now here we are 30 years after the original release and I find myself bored. Artoo mailboxes and Celebration IV just aren't cutting it for me. I'm not pumped at all. I want it back and I won't deny it. I want to see 'The Empire Strikes Back' crawling up the screen at my local cinema. I want to see it on TV in commercials and news reports; lines around the block of people waiting to see the films again in the theater. That's what it's all about. The Special Edition release was a good time.
It's not a lot to ask, is it?
