Reviews & Views for Film & Scores

Postby CoGro » May 24th 2007 8:47 pm

Too lazy to write out full review.

It's a better film than Chest, not as good as Pearl.

ILM should win the Oscar. Brilliant work. Kudos to Knoll and Guyet for a good show.

Wow, what a dissapointment. It's a silly movie, and that's coming from someone who loved the first one and equates the second to the Empire Strikes Back of the series.

[spoil][align=left]The whole Sao Feng/Singapore angle was pointless, similar to the cannibals in 2. As was the Locker sequence. The multiple-Jack scene didn't work for me because he didn't care to be suffering, much less bothered that he was trapped in hell. And the story crossed the line into silly fantasy with the Attack of the Giant Woman. It was also way too long, with the end battle not being a sufficient payoff to the buildup.

Things I did like -

Davey Jones' confrontation with Calypso.
Pintel and Raggetty looking at Elizabeth's twot.
The awesome swordfight between Jones and Jack, all fifteen seconds of it.
Zimmer's score, most of which wasn't on the soundtrack.[/align][/spoil]

[spoil]The conclusion is basically this: Tia Dalma is the goddess Calypso and Davey Jones' lost love. She gets released from human form by Barbossa, turns into a giant crab woman and causes the maelstrom. Jones stabs Will in the heart, Jack brings Jones' heart to Will, Will kills Jones and replaces him as the captain of the Dutchmen. The scene after the credits shows Elizabeth and her son, ten years later, waiting for Will to come ashore.[/spoil]

Wow, I'm really surprised about the reviews coming in. I've got a free pass to any movie 10 days out or older. Here's to seeing it in June ;)

It was a pretty good flick. I wouldn't mind seeing it again just to watch what I missed. Plus I didn't stay until the end to see the bonus stuff, but my brother told me about it earlier.

I definitely left the theater satisfied unlike Spider-man 3.

[spoil]Fountain of Youth arc left story open to do another movie if they wish.[/spoil]

Having to download the film because I doubt I'll be able to see it in theaters....

I will say I throughly enjoyed the film. I've loved the series thus far and that in my opinion was easily the best one so far. The way how it ended could easily open up for a 4th film.

It's amazing too how well Zimmer's score works in the film but on it's own it's just .....meh.

This movie sucked shit.

I seriously wanted to walk out of the theatre, and thats pretty rare. In sum, I thought that the first film was simply genius enterntainment. The second film was a two and a half hour trailer for the third. AT WORLD'S END was essentially filmmakers masterbating...it was so tediously self-indulgent.

Yuk.

I'll throw my lot in with CoGro....it was better than 2, not as good as Pearl.

If you could hack up 2 and 3, take about an hour of all the good shit in each of them, put them together and make a 2 hour movie, it would kick ass.

I liked it, I might see it again. If you're going to the theatre, stay until the end of the credits (don't know if anyone's said it yet or not) but there's extra at the end.

Yup, seen it twice. WAY better the second time.

Better than 2, not better than the original. I agree with Cryostar, delete about 1/2 an hour from both 2 and 3 and you have a neigh-on perfect trilogy of Pirate films.

Great movie, fuckloads better than that Spiderman crap.

I haven't seen the first two, and I went into this one without any knowledge of what POTC is about or the previous story lines. I thought this movie was ok as a standalone movie. I'm not into Johnny Depp or Orlando Bloom so to me they were just kinda meh. I thought the scene with the monkey in the cannon was hilarious though. I guess it just isn't my thing.

Caved and saw it. I thought it was alright. A lot better than Dead Man's Chest. This one moves the plot along well, unlike the last one where we had to sit through an unfunny 45 minute scene of slapstick on an island and all this shitty exposition for a convoluted story. That filmed leaned far too much towards fantasy and turning everything supernatural and forgetting about the swashbuckling and rum-running. Squid Head and his crew of aquatic fishy things were downright retarded, I'm sorry. That kind of thing is an issue here too, but I found it more tolerable because the film as a whole was just better. Here are my observations from what I recall.

Lord Beckett was a highly weak villain. His dramatic death scene as his vessel is destroyed all around him in slow motion felt really awkward and out of place, given that he was a villain on par with Nute Gunray.

Norrington was wasted.

Geoffrey Rush was great, but I wish his relationship with Jack Sparrow would have been played out more.

The scenes with all the Jack clones (little, big and fishy) were truly bizarre and unnecessary. I'm certain we would have been able to make that connection to his escape from Port Royal in the first film when he frees himself from the cell, for instance, without having three Jacks remind him how to escape...? What were they thinking.

The fight at the end was really cool, but it would have worked just fine in my opinion without the giant whirlpool.

The gigantic Calypso woman was retarded.

The way they go to rescue Jack by falling off the edge of the world and then flipping the Pearl was just awful. I let it slide because it was stupid to kill Jack in the last one and we needed him, but I still think it surpassed Squid Head and his fish crew in terms of pure retardation and ridiculousness.

It was decent entertainment, but the first film is much better.

1) I believe it was at the point where Davy Jones was on Becketts ship with a certain other person having Tea that the conversation occurred.

I was honestly hoping for more all out fleet battle between the pirates and the armada.

^ Yup, it's a passing comment made by Beckett to Davy Jones on Becketts ship.

Beckett I thought worked quite well as a bad guy, not quite the gravitas but in similar vain of a "Grand Moff Tarkin" type villian. I liked him.

But Davenport should've really featured alot more, and been a bigger influlence given the first two films. It's like the writers forgot about him...or forgot what they WERE going to do with him.

I think all those things would've hit the cutting room floor had there been a better editor at the helm, and little less of that "power" in Gore's hands. He's a solid director and a good FX guy, but he's not a film editor whatsoever. As evident by the last two films, I think for both (especially with the first) less is always more, all those things you mentioned would've been great little extras on the DVD but should not have really been in the film. Especially the Giant Calypso.

I didn't mind the multiple jacks, because they were obviously halucinations and was quite Terry Gilliam/Monty Python funny.

But both movies were bloated, and needed a blunter scapal taken to them.

The scene that best explains why the first movie is just better than the sequels is as follows:

"Everyone stay calm, we're taking over the ship!"
"Aye! Avast!" (British sailors laugh)

...or a nice simple "laugh" moment, like Jack and the Boat scene from the first movie, so simple...very witty, and funny.

They also kinda muffed the 'introduction' of Jack in the third film, they did a better job in 1 & 2 of having a suprising "twist" on first showing him in a boat.
