EXCERPTS:

Dave Filoni: The first thing I edited of this show was just in 2-D drawings as animatics. George liked it, but he said "It's not fun." And I thought, "Well, gee, George I don't know what that means." So he's been teaching me. The fact that George is involved, more than any other reason, is why it comes out feeling like Star Wars.

Dave Filoni: There is an anime influence. The vehicles look relatively the same, we didn't mess with their proportions. Anakin looks pretty realistic, in this universe. Yoda was a puppet in the movies, so he's more cartoony in ours. [Japanese animation director] Myazaki always did that kind of thing: he'd have very cartoony characters mixed with very real characters. It's that same dynamic going on. We've kept all the style choices within the Ralph McQuarrie and Joe Johnston overall look.

Thanks for that, on a scale between 0-10 I'd say I'm looking forward to the Clone Wars about a 6.9 at this stage, the Insider article upped that by point 4. I think the mag has hit the shelves in the US, are there any other snaps inside?

Tag I had to reformat your post for our Star War TV Mini-Site, so I am quoting your request here. Although Starwars.com reposts Insider content online as "Insider Supplments" so the new Clone Wars article should be up soon. RebelScum posted a cover scan last Thursday.

What's interesting from Dave Filoni's comments is that there is mixing of cartoonish elements with realistic ones. Which explains why Yoda looks like something out of the Rankin-Bass holiday specials.

I can just about handle a cartoon-ish Yoda but a Kenobi cut from marble, I cannot. On the Insider cover he looks like he's just failed his Invincibles II audition. Also what's up with Dooku's clamped head in the trailer? This could all go so wrong.

I'll agree that it looks pretty bad, from a certain point of view. Anakin seems fine, but Obi-Wan looks comparatively less "realistic" and more like a caricature. I don't remember Yoda having eyes that big. I mean some of it looks great, some of it very poor, but it's strange. Things like the walker being blown away and falling down a cliff in the trailer look incredible, but then characters like Obi-Wan look like ass. I still think it's still better than the Tartakovsky look.

Definately agree there. I fucking hated the Tartakovsky thing.

Keep in mind though that this new series is still a cartoon, so it is going to look, well, cartoony.

Whew, I thought I was the only one. It's a nice style, for Samurai Jack. Just not for Star Wars. I didn't think, anyways.

And I don't think I'm going to mind Incredibles II Obi or a shaved green Mogwi playing Yoda all that much, as long as the vehicles and environments are more realistic. I just wonder what characters like Greivous and Genosians are going to look like. I hope they don't make them 'cute' too.
