The X-Files: I Want to Believe

Ten years after the first film and six years after the show went off the air, The X-Files returns to theaters with Fox Mulder, Dana Scully — and a lot riding on the bet that fans want more of the FBI's paranormal-investigating agents.

The film, which remains without a formal title, will dump the long-running "mythology" plotline — that aliens live among us and are part of a colonizing effort — that made it one of the most popular television shows in the late 1990s but ultimately drove away some viewers who found it too complex and ambiguous.

Yeah. And considering the boring (wtf?!) "main plotline" of the series is the main thing that kept people like myself watching it for 9 seasons, and buying the DVD's, and occasionally rewatching those 9 seasons, I'm all of a sudden not looking as forward to this as much as I was a week ago.

A 2 hour 'monster of the week' episode will, and should, fall flat on it's fucking face. I hope Krychek and Spender show up as super-soldiers in the end and fucking murder everyone.

I was thinking maybe the argument from Chris might be that the invasion force isn't supposed to get here till 2012.

Still, the two of them aren't even FBI agents anymore and they're on the run.

I just hope they don't pull a 'Dues Ex Machina' and suddenly all the dark forces in the Bureau and elsewhere have all been caught, picked up and swept away.

I think I'm going to avoid the spoilers on this one, like I have for Indy 4, and either love it or hate it I suppose. I'm just really confused on what it's supposed to be about now, which seems to be a good jumping off point for me. But it's undeniable that the mythology they developed is what made the show interesting for most fans. If it were just the concept and the production values, it wouldn't have made it past Duane Berry.

I find it very deniable. I stopped watching midway through the 6th season once it was clear that not only were they never going to resolve the alien question, but that Chris Carter didn't even have an answer.

Well, yes, I can't argue that anymore. Upon observation of the current state of the X-verse, it is clear that Chris Carter did indeed have no answers. And they were just making it up as they went along. But the people who held out for the duration, like myself, were sort of expecting that this was all more well thought out. And that there would be some logical, if fantastic and even irrational conclusion to it all. Not that they would pick it all back up years later, and in the midst of so many unanswered questions, give us Teen Wolf redux.

I guess what I meant was, that to the hardcore fan (or maybe just for some, like myself), as opposed to the casual viewer, the mythology made it more interesting. Sure, a lot of the creature feature episodes were good, and not all the "storyline" ones were home-runs, but I don't think people sat through two seasons of John Dogget hoping for the return of the Flukeman.

But maybe I'm just projecting my personal opinion here. I'm really just speaking for myself.

Yeah a monster of the week feature film really doesn't make sense especially after the shitty finale. FIGHT THE FUTURE freakin' rocked because it was a mythology episode.

I recently bought the complete series, so I'm going back and revisiting the series right now. Just wrapped season two before Christmas. I surely loved this series but I agree that the later seasons, 8 and 9 especially, sucked balls. They needed to go out with a bang and a second XFiles film right then.

I used to love the series, still do really, but I pretty much gave it up after Mulder was out and Patrick was in. I never got back into it. Loved the movie. I would still like to get the entire set and watch the whole series, and wether or not this actually continues the mythology, I'll still be excited about it. I just think that they want the movie to be accessable to everyone, kind of like plug and play - not just people that watched a show that went off air 6 years ago.

There seems to be a minor squabble over what the title should be.

Chris Carter and 20th Century Fox are fighting over the “hush-hush” title to the second “X-Files” movie due July 25, relays James Hibberd of The Hollywood Reporter in his report from the Wednesday “X-Files” Paley Fest event at the Arclight in Hollywood.

"I know what I want it to be, but Fox has ideas of their own," Carter told the Paley crowd. "I know what it should be."

From Hibberd’s piece:

The film will pick up six years after the end of the series. It's supposed to be a standalone feature removed from the alien mythology of the TV show, a throwback to the show's "monster of the week" episodes. Still, some lingering aspects from the series, like whether Scully's child will be a normal tyke, will be addressed. "It will not be a mythology movie, but it's true to everything that's come before," says writer-producer Frank Spotnitz.

That's what the UFO poster that adorned the X-Files office from the very beginning had written across the bottom of it.

And yes, I have one of these posters. And I have actually seen a real naked woman. Hard to believe, I'm sure.

But it sounds like a stupid title. Allthough, the actual title never really was a make or break point for me anyway. Considering the direction the story in this film allegedly takes, my interest is waining a bit. The title has little to do with it. But I'm going to go into it with an open mind. A lot of the creature feature episodes were great, I just wonder if a whole film like that with no answers as to any of the other stuff is going to leave me feeling unsatisfied when it's over. We shall see.

And Scully, for some odd reason, only really turned me on when she was weraing a skirt. I'm still trying to figure that one out.

It seems a synopsis got out and has since been removed from the film's WIKI page. It was the synopsis for the official novelization.

Allow me to get into the big picture here (regarding the title)...

Chris Carter has said numerous times in the past (and in the last episode commentary as well) that Fox Mulder's main arc is his search for God and faith. That's what 'I Want to Believe' means. He wants to believe that beyond all this terrible shit that apparently exists on earth, i.e. sewer monsters, werewolfs, vampires and a giant alien invasion coming in 2012 that we can't prevent, there is a higher power beyond all of that (a God depending on your religion). This would also help him come to terms with the terrrible fate his sister might of had.

Personally, I think it's a good arc, just badly executed in the final seasons of the show. I was joking with a friend about how funny it would be if the "monster of the week" for the film was God, in which case the title would make total sense (although personally I would prefer it be the title of a mythology film). As for the awkwardness of the title (X-Files: I Want To Believe: Fight the Future 2) I think it would be placed on posters as more of a tagline to set it apart from the series/other film, kind of like how Fight the Future was for the first film. You probably won't even see it in the main titles, instead just 'The X-Files'.

*Mulder apparently doesn't believe (even though he's seen werewolves, aliens and leprechauns) in 'something' which makes me think that this is a movie about faith and the existence of God.

I friggin loved X-files, and as much as I enjoyed the mythology especially in the eraly seasons when it was developing the monster of the week episodes were great. I was trying to remember some of the actors that went on to become somewhat to very succesful that made cameos. Jack Black, Tony Chalubbi, Luke Wilson hmmm I am sure there are more. Robert Patrick actually ruined his career I think by x files, he went from Terminator to John Doggett to co starring with a wrestler? Frank Black should make a cameo, perhaps Fox can resurrect a few of their shows

Man you are such a tool. X-Files is one of the most respected shows of all time - what the hell did Chris Carter do to you? I can understand it not being in someone's taste, but Carter and the gang consistently put out film quality material on TV - I've rewatched a lot of the first seasons recently, and seriously, the writing, directing, acting, cinematography is about 500x better than 99% of the stuff thats on TV right now. You are one bitter, bitter fellow. Why are you even on this board if you hate everything?

As a viewer, I cant argue that. I didn't like every episode, but the even ones I didn't completely enjoy were done well. Except for the episode titled "3". Everyone involved with that one should have a contract hit out on them right now. And parts of the last three seasons were kind of annoying. But the movie was good. I don't know if the story in this one will be the greatest ever told, but I expect the film to be put together pretty well.
