Hey DP
I saw RAMBO and a small indy film, FALLING just the other day. Both were extreme in its blood/gore. It was just one of those days.
As for RAMBO, I'm not really sure what to make of it. My impression going in was that RAMBO was going to pay homage to FIRST BLOOD in the same way that ROCKY BALBOA did ROCKY.
The concept is the same, which is wrap up the character with a very in depth character-based film.
In the end it was a character film that fell flat, so they decided to try and make a political statement, but really just ended up with an extremely bloody and gore-filled flim. which is cool but -
You get chills when the guitar and horns echo Goldsmith's score of the first film. You get a kick out of the flashbacks and brief turmoil the character experiences. But in the end, apparently John Rambo likes to kill because he likes to kill. Sort of undercuts the character from the first two films, I think. If they have an extensive director's cut, I hope it does more with his character.
Oh well I did like the ending would have liked a tad more closure, but I guess where he ends up is more important then what happens when he gets there
And actually the blood and gore is pretty well represented by that red band trailer. If they cut much, it was a few frames only.
