Olga Kurylenko picked as new "Bond girl"

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - In the secretive world of movie spy James Bond, the "Bond girl" for the new installment in the movie series had been top secret, but on Monday Bond's backers said Ukrainian bombshell Olga Kurylenko is the actress.

Columbia Pictures, the film studio behind the popular movies about the British secret agent, said the 28 year-old Kurylenko has been cast in one of the most coveted roles in the movies -- 007's sidekick for the still untitled Bond flick.

The film, which is the 22nd in the series that dates back to 1962's "Dr. No," is due in theaters in November and stars Daniel Craig as the dashing British spy who regularly saves the world from a destructive evil villain.

Early reports had actress Gemma Arterton as the new Bond girl, but even though Arterton has a role in the new film it is not as large as Kurylenko's, said a source close to the film.

The Ukrainian actress joins a long list of leading ladies to be cast alongside the super spy including Ursula Andress in "Dr No," Halle Berry, Kim Basinger and most recently Eva Green in "Casino Royale," which grossed nearly $600 million in worldwide ticket sales.

In the past, being a "Bond girl" has given actresses massive exposure and launched lucrative careers.

A former model, Kurylenko was most recently seen alongside Timothy Olyphant in last November's "Hitman."

British actor Craig made his first appearance as the secret agent in "Casino Royale" and returns for this newest movie directed by Marc Foster, better known for his widely acclaimed dramas like "Finding Neverland" and "The Kite Runner."

Also returning from "Royale" are Judi Dench as Bond's boss M, Jeffery Wright as CIA agent Felix Leiter and Mathieu Amalric, currently playing French film "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly," as the new Bond villain.

Hopefully they'll use her a lot better than they did in Hitman.

I greatly enjoyed Casino Royale. Its style unexpectedly became my favorite in the series and Craig's character was spot-on for me. Since this will supposedly be a "sequel" to that film, I definately have high hopes for it.

Found this answer:
Other Fleming short story titles now being rumored to be the basis for future Bond films include "The Property of a Lady" (previously filmed as part of "Octopussy"), and "Quantum of Solace".

And that it's also continuing off of Casino Royale, where Bond seeks revenge for the death of Vesper.

Apparently the next flick kicks off from the last shot of the previous Bond Film, where he's on the steps with that massive fuck-off gun after shooting that dude. That's where the next one starts....

Here's another interesting tidbit:
Producer Barbara Broccoli said the film, directed by Marc Forster ("Monster's Ball," "The Kite Runner"), mixes Bond's "inner turmoil" with action — and of course gadgets — as he tries to stop a shadowy cabal trying to bring down the world economy.

Craig's second Bond adventure continues in the gritty vein of "Casino Royale," in which a rough-edged 007, newly granted his "license to kill," bled, sweat and felt real emotion. But Wilson promised it also has "twice as much action" as its predecessor.

I'm kinda worried about the plot because didn't they try doing that in Goldeneye and one other one as well?

To be fair, just how many plausible "villain taking over/destroying the world" scenarios can one series manage? I think at this point in the Bond franchise, it's all about how the villains will go about trying to bring down the world's economy.

Well, I'd like to see them do something besides take down the economy, like going after a rogue nation developing nukes or something like that. Makes me wish they'd make some more Tom Clancy Movies.

Anyways, here's the Sony Press relase for the plot:
Betrayed by Vesper, the woman he loved, 007 fights the urge to make his latest mission personal. Pursuing his determination to uncover the truth, Bond and M (Judi Dench) interrogate Mr White (Jesper Christensen) who reveals the organisation which blackmailed Vesper is far more complex and dangerous than anyone had imagined.

Forensic intelligence links an Mi6 traitor to a bank account in Haiti where a case of mistaken identity introduces Bond to the beautiful but feisty Camille (Olga Kurylenko), a woman who has her own vendetta. Camille leads Bond straight to Dominic Greene (Mathieu Amalric), a ruthless business man and major force within the mysterious organisation.

On a mission that leads him to Austria, Italy and South America, Bond discovers that Greene, conspiring to take total control of one of the world’s most important natural resources, is forging a deal with the exiled General Medrano (Joaquin Cosio). Using his associates in the organisation, and manipulating his powerful contacts within the CIA and the British government, Greene promises to overthrow the existing regime in a Latin American country, giving the General control of the country in exchange for a seemingly barren piece of land.

In a minefield of treachery, murder and deceit, Bond allies with old friends in a battle to uncover the truth. As he gets closer to finding the man responsible for the betrayal of Vesper, 007 must keep one step ahead of the CIA, the terrorists and even M, to unravel Greene’s sinister plan and stop his organisation.

Well, it is a reboot, so I don't mind a little retrograde. I thought Casino Royale did a wonderful job of having the villain engaged in a fairly grounded "evil plan." LeChiffre was not omnipotent nor did he have a superweapon poised to destroy everything.

Agreed. It seems they're in bed with terrorists. They knew about 9-11 according to 'M' (shorting of airline stocks) and then LeChiffre was trying to do some dealing on his own which exposed the organization.

This new SpECTRE clearly wants anarchy, but good writing will keep their methods grounded in some semblance of reality.

Mathis is back? Cool. :monocle:

It must have been Vesper who told LeChiffre about the chip.

By the way, it's time to bring Moneypenny and 'Q' into this. Small intros will suffice.

According to the MI6 website, there is no 'Q' and no Moneypenny in the film. :o
MI6 has long reported that two of James Bond's long standing allies at MI6 - Miss Moneypenny and Q - would not feature in the 22nd film in the series. As you know, both characters were absent from Casino Royale.

Official confirmation came via the press conference.

Producer Michael G. Wilson stated that in order for the two characters to have appeared in the new film, moments would have to be carved out for them which would not have felt "organic."

Wilson left the door open for the characters, saying that they may come back in the future, but only if the story demands it.

I can't say I like this idea. :(

I just read somewhere that Al Pacino has signed on for a very brief scene in the movie, head of the terrorist organisation. I guess we'll consider it a rumour until it's confirmed elsewhere (If it hasn't already been confirmed)?

Amy Winehouse to do QoS Theme

Amy Winehouse and producer Mark Ronson, the team behind Winehouse’s breakout album Back To Black, are reuniting—but instead of a new album, the duo will be working on the theme song for the new James Bond film, Quantum Of Solace.

Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, producers of the highly anticipated 22nd James Bond adventure "Quantum of Solace," announced today that multi-Grammy Award-winning and platinum selling recording artists Jack White of the rock band The White Stripes, and Alicia Keys, have recorded the theme song for the film, which will be released worldwide this November.

Agreed. A definite improvement over the teaser.

I do have a few issues though. The whole Bond as rogue agent is somewhat tiresome. It's been done to death. I mean they just used it in Casino Royale.

"You knew I wouldn't let this go." - Bond

Well, I knew you'd be you." - 'M'

Now I absolutely loved Casino Royale, but oy vey! :whateva:

And Dench's 'M' is starting to become grating. I don't know if she's been in too many of these or what. Whatever it is I think I've had my fill.

Well, this is a continuation of Casino Royale, so the whole rogue part makes sense. At least it's being done a whole lot better than in that last Brosnan one.

I cannot wait to see this movie! This'll be the first movie in nearly a year that I will see in the theater.
