Star Wars: The Phantom Menace Review (Part 1 of 7)

I saw this a few days ago. Got through maybe the first three installments. The guy has some pretty undeniable points.

But honestly? The gag gets old real. quick. It's *not* an old guy. It's some schmo pretending to be an old guy. His voice is fucking annoying. And his non sequitur jokes are a bit like Chinese water torture.

So yeah, good points (some *real good points*), but not worth spending OVER AN ENTIRE HOUR (add it up, seven segments @ ten minutes per segment) of your life watching.

I enjoyed most of it. His Star Trek reviews are pretty good too.

I'd kind of like to see him do EII and EIII, but I guess it would be redundant.

Not for nothing but it's pretty obvious this character is a put on but that's part of the charm. That said, I don't agree with his views at all and something tells me he doesn't much either. After all, you've got to love something a whole hell of a lot to put this much effort into hating on it. Either way, funny is funny and this review is funny. "Cartoon rabbit that steps in the poopie" kills me every single time.

I don't agree with his views at all and something tells me he doesn't much either. After all, you've got to love something a whole hell of a lot to put this much effort into hating on it.

I don't know if that's necessarily true. Loving something doesn't mean overlooking its flaws, it means recognizing them and embracing them. There is some hyperbole there for obvious comic effect, but it's probably pretty likely that the author agrees with what he wrote - it's tough to riff on something for an hour if you don't think it should be made fun of - either that or he is a cognitive dissonance Zen master.

That said, I thought Episode 1 was the best of the prequels and Episode 2 the worst, so it will be fun (and mildly cathartic) to hear a comedic eviscerating of "Clones."

I agree with that sentiment wholeheartedly. My observation was more pointed at the effort spent on his part to a) write the review b) recite the review in an actorly fashion (it's basically a performance, complete with some pretty well timed comic beats and interludes) and c) cut a very effective montage of clips to accompany said review.

Anyone who dedicates that much time to something they hate is POS. If he doesn't hate the prequels he better tackle the OT as well, cuz there's a hell of a lot wrong with the OT.

Clearly a lot of effort went into this and there are some excellent scenes (the basement!), but man is it slow and overdrawn. I was getting bored before it even started to get funny and definitely I don't have the patience to watch all 7 parts of it.

Also, let's face it it's just another sheep rant and not a proper review.

It's basically a super rant. The problem I have with this review is the same problem I have with nearly every other negative review of the prequels and that is they spend far too much time analyzing what the movies aren't instead of what the movies are.

I, on the other hand, can also find amusement in such a ridiculous cartoon character dicking around the Star Wars movies. It's a case of something being SO unfunny and so unbelievable that it's actually fuckin' hilarious. I even want to be deeply offended. What WAS he thinking??

Lately I can't get over Samuel L. Jackson being in the movies, doing nothing in particular most of the time. I think it was seeing his action figure at Wal-Mart with the purple lightsaber. "HE IS THE TRAITUHHHHARRRGGHH!!!!"

It had some great moments. The GG/Palpatine holo-exchange was particularly hilarious. I would just hate to be the one to tell Harry that The Falcon did in fact make its way into the PT.

As usual, he had a lot of interesting, mostly accurate critiques (the analysis of characters sitting/walking was particularly astute). But not his best effort, methinks. He spent a lot of time prequel-bashing and not focused on ROTS specifically, which made the overly long review feel redundant. His voice is still as annoying as hell. And it wasn't as funny as prior efforts.

*shrugs shoulders* I think Goddard once said, "The best way to critique a film is to make a film," and that's precisely what he's done here. He takes the wind out of his own sails several times throughout the review(s) so the fact that his reviews are so long winded clearly isn't lost on him.

I actually agree with most of the points he makes in regard to Anakin's character and that's one of the reasons I LOVE the prequels. Again, the saving grace of the entire endeavor is that Lucas didn't simply remake the earlier films but rather mined the universe he created for deeper meaning, meaning that some may not see but so be it. Lucas has said he's satisfied with his creation and at the end of the day he got his uncompromised vision up on the screen. Everything that we see has a logic, a purpose that we can either interpret on ignore based on our personal reaction to the film itself. If Lucas struggled with the Machiavellian plot and behind the scenes motivations of some of the characters then perhaps that's to be expected-hey, there was only one Niccolo Machiavelli after all.

The entire saga is rife with astonishing ideas about heroism, culture, religion, philosophy, cinema, good, evil and even human nature. It is also, at times, clumsy and lumbering. I acknowledge this and forgive the films their flaws not just for all that they get right but for all that they say and mean to me.

A lot of what Plinkett says in this and all of his reviews has to be taken with some grain of salt. Any film analyzed to the depths Plinkett has gone to here can be revealed to be full of holes. You can just as easily render "Citizen Kane" (the other film he cites in his review) as wholly manipulative and completely implausible from the first scene; after all who is the room with Kane to hear him when utters his last word, "Rosebud?"

I just read it. It's very well thought out, and although there are a few misused or misplaced words, I have to agree with pretty much all of his rebuttal. Especially "I don't understand how anyone can bash Jar Jar Binks on one hand but like Mr. Plinkett on the other." That's what I've been saying. The whole thing is just an overdone and unfunny schtick, with little bearing on what a normal human person would think about a fucking movie.

The whole thing is basically one geek calling out another, but at least Jim Raynor actually watched and understood TPM, and Star Wars in general, before writing this. And the Red Letter dude was obviously just being a loser fan boy dork bag.
