QUOTE: Thor follows the adventures of the legendary Norse thunder deity and is being written by Mark Protosevich (Poseidon). Protosevich said "the movie will take place in the world of myth and legend but will not betray some of the thematic elements of the comics that made them so appealing, like the idea of a god growing to truly understand man."

Everyone loves Vikings. I would prefer ULTIMATE THOR, the militant grunge from the The Ultimates book over the original Marvel Universe Thor.

He'd need to put on about 50lbs. of muscle. I was thinking of that guy who was on Sex and the City in that last season.

Taken from Comingsoon.net article found here:

[spoil]
David Goyer Writing Thor Treatment

"Newsarama reports that J. Michael Straczynski announced during a Marvel panel at Charlotte's Heroes Convention 2006 this weekend that David Goyer (Batman Begins, "Blade" trilogy) is writing a treatment for Marvel Studios' Thor movie.

It was previously announced that the legendary Norse Thunder deity would hammer his way to the big screen with the help of screenwriter Mark Protosevich (Poseidon, The Cell). It is unclear if Goyer is rewriting Protosevich's script or starting from scratch.

Thor is part of Marvel's independent production slate of feature films expected to be financed with Marvel's $525 million revolving film financing facility and distributed under the company's overall distribution arrangement with Paramount Pictures."

Sure it could get stupid but basically they need to combine elements of Lord of the Rings and comic books and it's there. Although I'm wondering if Thor will actually wear his Viking helmet?? I hope so, I'm sick of the neutered, realistic approach that people like Bryan Singer took with X-Men.

I mean give us more of what these cats looked like in the comic books. For example Wolverine didn't just wear yellow spandex, he had different cooler color combo's. If you make it cool enough we won't laugh at it, just make it good dammit!

can't really argue with what I'm seeing so far because it looks like a movie version of Thor. Although, I get a slightly Jedi vibe from it. Ya know, like Obi-Wan's brother Thor and his lighthammer. With this Thor concept art and Cap America, it looks like the Avengers is shaping up nicely in a uniform design style kinda way. I would love to see this entire series of concept art for the whole gang.

Parts of me cringe when looking at these photos. But other parts hope that this will be dope as fuck. If they can convey the raw power of the gods in a believable manner, and keep things moving with a lot of action, what we get may be great. As a fan of Marvel's Thor from before I could actually read the comics, I can't help but imagine the dissapointment I'm going to feel if this all goes to shit. And the joy if it doesn't.

:o wow

Is that last pic real? Among other bitching I have done about Marvel's casting (mostly the other studios movies), I always thought Jackman's Wolverine looked a little less intimidating than he should have. Midgard Thor above sure looks the burly heroic part, even if he isn't 8 ft w/evr and 400+ lbs.

Flash Gordon Vibe is a good thing, unless there's tights, obviously rubber masks, and a severly dated yet lovably campy soundtrack. Princess whoever (I forget her name) was a trampy slut too, and I have had a thing for decent looking trampy sluts ever since. Maybe they can have some of that too. There's always busty tramps in Asgard. Right?

Suddenly not as worried.

I dig the helmets.

I bet we'll see bikers wearing them in a year or two. Thors looks like it could be turned into a wearable collectible. If I win the lottery, I'm gonna be pimping it. I don't think it would work for business casual, but I might try, depending on how much moolah it is.

THOR footage viewed at ComicCon:

[spoil]
Clark Gregg’s Agent Coulson opens the film circling a man sitting in a chair in what looks like an interrogation room. “One way or another we find out what we want to know. We’re good at that. It’s not easy to do what you did. My men are the most highly trained in the world and you made them look like mall cops.”

We see shots of Hemsworth rumbling with the SHIELD agents. This is all Earth stuff with Thor fighting without a suit or hammer.

“Why don’t you tell me where you received that training. Afghanistan? You strike me more as a soldier of fortune type. Who are you?”

And that’s when we see Hemsworth’s face for the first time, giving Coulson a big fuck you stare.

From here on the footage moves to Asgard. Sweeping shots of golden streets as Anthony Hopkins’ Odin speaks over the footage.

“I have sacrificed much to achieve peace. You have opened these innocent realms to the horror and devastation of war. You are a vain and cruel boy.”

Hopkins really shouts down Hemsworth, who dishes it back at the old man. “And you are an old fool!” Hopkins responds with quiet sadness. “I was a fool… to think you were ready. In the name of my father and his father before… I cast you out!”

That last bit was played over the scene in the Great Hall, Thor on his knees in front of Odin, his winged helm is removed and then we see a flash and a deep rumble of thunder and Hemsworth is laying in a desert.

Natalie Portman and Kat Dennings are leaning over him as he wakes up. He looks around upon waking and says, “Oh, no… this is Earth, isn’t it?” Portman and Dennings trade a look.

Hemsworth changes shirts in a later scene and Dennings sneaks a peek and says to Portman: “You know for a crazy homeless person he’s pretty cut.”

Next shot had Hemsworth trying to explain where he came from to Portman. “Your ancestors called it magic, yet you call it science. I can prove they are one and the same. The answers you seek will be yours once I claim what’s mine.”

Mjolnir is in embedded in the ground, surrounded by tarps and caution tape. A muddy Hemsworth approaches as Hopkins voice over says “Whoever wields this hammer, be he worthy, shall possess the power of Thor.”

Hemsworth wraps his fingers around the handle and tries to pull with all his might, fails, screams to the heavens in frustration.

Then we leave Earth and return to Asgard as Odin lays dead (presumably) and Loki takes power as the successor to the throne. This, apparently, isn’t good news for the people of earth as they run around in a panic. More Odin voice over as Thor watches the devastation: “His fate is in his own hands now.”

Coulson and his SHIELD agents are in the desert as something crashes into the dust. The metal Destroyer stands and approaches the agents. “You are using unregistered weapons technology. Identify yourself.” One of the agents asks Coulson: “Is that one of Stark’s?” Coulson responds, “I don’t know. He never tells me anything.”

The Destroyer’s helmet opens and a bright beam of light boils there before shooting out and… well, destroying things.

There are lots of glimpses of the fully costumed Thor in battle, very quickly cut in the sizzle reel, but really badass swinging the hammer, deflecting blows with it against a stormy background
.

Gotta say, I really dug the hell out of the footage. The scope is just as epic as I was hoping it’d be and Branagh seems to have found the right balance of fantasy and real world. Of course, the final product is yet to be seen, but the footage was pretty ass-kicking.

If you didn't catch it then you didn't miss much. The trailer strikes a very similar tone to the "Iron Man" films-that's a good thing for continuity's sake among the various Marvel properties but they still haven't convinced me that this is going to be something special. It just feels like yet another superhero action adventure.

Cool shot of Thor on the new issue of Empire magazine.

ImageImage

ImageImage

scans from http://spidermedia.ru

Kenneth Branagh excerpts from the article:
The issue of tone was crucial, because in the '60s run of comics it does get pretty camp. So the trick was finding a way to make a different kind of superhero - a god - compelling and arresting and not make him too flamboyant," says the former Shakespearean wunderkind.

"The script is an epic adventure with, at the centre, human dynamics. I looked at the relationships and saw brothers, mother, father and sons: the tight royal circle. When you get down to it, this is pure Shakespeare: it's a drama about familial problems concerning thse who possess great power."

"When I came along there had been several strands of development. One kept the movie entirely in the Viking era, and one was more fantastical. I wanted to do something that possibly touched on both. What appealed to me from the myths and comics was a sort of Prodigal Son story - of exile and return. That and the enjoyment of seeing a fish out of water. The notion of Asgardians coming to modern-day Earth was particularly important to me. I actually, coming from the direction of period drama, was the one most resistant to setting it entirely in a historical context."

For more from Branagh and star Chris Hemsworth, and loads more images from Thor, head on out and buy a copy of the November issue of Empire. Otherwise, you'll have to wait until the movie is released on April 29 next year.

This movie looks like pure shit.

But it also looks like something amazing out of the 80s from my childhood that is admittedly pure shit, but completely awesome to me. I mean, those shots in the temple or whatever look like something out of the Masters of the Universe movie, with Anthony Hopkins in the place of Frank Langella. It even has a similar storyline, with Thor ending up on earth and hanging out with Americans. It sounds completely terrible and I kind of want to see it.

The biggest negative for me is the costumes. Thor should either look OG (left) or Ultimate (right). Films of this genre should follow precedents set by the early 1980s ones such as Conan The Barbarian and Excalibur (available for download in the MF Cargo Forums).

Yes, several hundred thanks bearvomit! Thats an awsome bit of 'news' I wouldn't have seen otherwise, nice find.

As far as the costumes, while I would love to have seen a quality version of the OG costumes onscreen, I'm pretty sure audiences would have been so distracted by the wtf factor that no story could overcome the urge for people to walk out after 15 minutes. And the 'ultimate' version, while obviously much cooler in the comics, in reality would have looked like he stole something out of Dog the Bounty Hunters closet and bedazzled it.

So I guess Im saying I'm in favor of the decision to go with the look of the current comic. Thor himselfs 'modern' comic and film look is reminiscent of OG 616 Thor's armor from the late 80's early 90's that he had when he was cursed, which I was so fond of I had planned on building and wearing armor of my own in daily life as an adult. I didn't, but now that I've reminded myself, who knows. I might.
