PLOT

1873. Arizona Territory. A stranger (Craig) with no memory of his past stumbles into the hard desert town of Absolution. The only hint to his history is a mysterious shackle that encircles one wrist. What he discovers is that the people of Absolution don't welcome strangers, and nobody makes a move on its streets unless ordered to do so by the iron-fisted Colonel Dolarhyde (Ford). It's a town that lives in fear.

But Absolution is about to experience fear it can scarcely comprehend as the desolate city is attacked by marauders from the sky. Screaming down with breathtaking velocity and blinding lights to abduct the helpless one by one, these monsters challenge everything the residents have ever known.

Now, the stranger they rejected is their only hope for salvation. As this gunslinger slowly starts to remember who he is and where he's been, he realizes he holds a secret that could give the town a fighting chance against the alien force. With the help of the elusive traveler Ella (Olivia Wilde), he pulls together a posse comprised of former opponents—townsfolk, Dolarhyde and his boys, outlaws and Apache warriors—all in danger of annihilation. United against a common enemy, they will prepare for an epic showdown for survival.

Wow. Looks interesting. I wonder how they'll manage to pull off defeating the aliens. Should be a hoot.

For those that may not know this is an adaption of the graphic novel which came out in 2006.

New Trailer today. The footage looks great but I'm not sure I dig the music selection - I would have gone for something more iconic and epic. I think this trailer makes the film feel more like "Wild Wild West."

Still excited to see it.

Easily my favorite movie of the summer. It becomes quite predictable in the third act, so it's not great, but the concept stayed fresh and entertaining.

Just got back not long ago.

It's a solid summer popcorn flick. My slight disappointment comes from the fact that this film had the potential to be so much more. It touches places that makes you feel "classic," but it never embraces those moments. It's like watching a wrestling match between the studio and a talented filmmaker just dying to take the plunge into originality. All that said, it's not terrible but I can see where people would be bored watching it. There's a lot of "been there done that" albeit in a different period. The last ACT suffers from videogame syndrome.

Cowboys and Aliens DIDN'T need to be a CGI alien-fest. It could have been a 1970s western meets 1980s sci-fi and been a classic. Instead, it's 1990s western and 2000s sci-fi.

The summer's best film remains X-Men: First Class by miles.

Last challenger: Rise of the fall of the re-rise of the Planet of the Apes.
