I'm hitting up an early screening tonight in Irvine (in IMAX 3D no less). I'll post my thoughts here afterward. Fair warning: I really haven't been that impressed by the footage I've seen thus far but the fact that I'm going to see it for free may balance things out.

It's for 3D and 'gold class' which comprises no more than about 30 seats in the cinema with licensed alcohol service so it's worth it I believe.

Sweet. I saw Avatar opening day at the Irvine Spectrum. Damn nice IMAX screen. I haven't really been blown away by any of the trailers either. And then the PG rating?

I was excited by the comic-con stuff and the trailers. Hoped that it would be great escapist entertainment since I'm a sci-fi geek and all. Apparently it's flat out awful.

I seem to remember posting that investing 300 million in a franchise that only 30 people give a shit about might be the absolute worst fucking idea ever unless of course Disney was convinced they had an absolute slam dunk of a product on their hands. Seeing how this might not be the case, it's fair to say somebody won't be getting their Christmas bonus.

I hope I'm entertained.

Thank you. I basically made this same point several times while waiting in line for the movie tonight. Literally every person who walked by us and asked what we were waiting for gave a blank stare when any one of us answered, "Tron." I'm actually willing to bet that at the end of their respective theatrical runs, the Yogi Bear movie will probably make more money than "Tron Legacy." With that in mind...

For all the hype and on screen excess, what it ultimately comes down to is this: if you enjoyed the first film you're probably going to enjoy the new flick 'cuz they're basically the same movie. It computing terms, it's a new skin on an old OS. Yes, this new movie does introduce some new concepts and ideas to the Tron universe (a universe which no one really cares about) but you're basically left with an Alice in Wonderland story told through the lens of a modern effects-laden action movie.

The movie is a lot of fun when it eventually gets going about 20 minutes in but stops dead in its tracks occasionally for some truly tedious moments of introspection and "humor." Fortunately, the director knows what this movie is all about and there are some really great (if not quite memorable) chase scenes and fights sequences

That said, the stars of this movie are the production design, visual effects and (ofcourse) Daft Punk's score. Tron Legacy is one of the most distinctive and (at times) beautiful movies I've seen. I think if you go into this with the perspective that it's basically a long form music video for the soundtrack, you'll have a much better time for it.

One last thing: the IMAX 3D gimmick is pretty weak. If you're going to see it in the premium format, make sure you see it on a real IMAX screen and not one of the multiplex retrofits they're trying to push as IMAX otherwise it's just a waste.

A very good film. There's more than enough substance to the story. The pacing is a bit slow and the performances outside of Jeff Bridges are a bit dodgy. But otherwise, highly entertaining.

Oh, and 3D is entirely unnecessary.

Now, back to addressing people who have enjoyed the pleasure of intercourse.

I'd like to focus my comments on the type of person who would write a review of Tron: Legacy that went something like this.

Based on the amount of pure hate this flick was getting, I was prepared for an epic fail on Disney's part. Whether that was true or not, the things that were guaranteed in my mind were the following: the effects would be great, the action would be fun, olivia wilde would be sexy, and this movie would be better than the original Tron.

For this film to truly fail in the eyes of reasonable people the effects would have to not work in any way, the action would have to be impossible to follow and be staged without any inspiration, the aesthetics would have to be completely boring, and the plotting to be incomprehensible. Basically, for TL to fail it would have to be TF: Revenge of the Fallen. Smart people shouldn't ask much from a Transformers movie: they should just want awesome action and some believable thrills tied together by a story that has enough of its shit together as to suspend your disbelief. Revenge of the Fallen was an EPIC FAIL because it couldn't manage to do this even though it, by definition, has the simplest path to entertaining its audience. TL is much like Transformers in that it doesn't require a whole lot to do what it's meant to do, which is to wow you with awesome effects in 3D with enough of a plot so you can enjoy the movie.

TL is not an epic fail. First off, it's entertaining - especially in the first half. It's also awe-inspiring in its visuals, especially in IMAX 3D. The light cycle scene alone is worth the price of admission. The Daft Punk score is note perfect for this movie; even good enough to warrant Oscar consideration (maybe not a win, but at least a nod for its creativity alone). You can feel that the filmmakers cared about this movie with each frame and sound and that counts for something: this film has its heart in the right place.

What it doesn't have is a strong narrative and confident plot, but this in no way should distract from the experience. You're in a fucking humanized computer reality - what the hell do you think everyone in the theatre is waiting for: high drama? No, they're all waiting for the next scene for people to kick ass so they can experience the sight of people dissolving into cubes. A more experienced, confident director probably would have tightened the plot and an elite director might have ordered some re-writes in the screenplay...but so what? THIS IS FUCKING TRON! I can't for the absolute life of me figure out how people are comparing this to Phantom Menace or Crystal Skull. You know why people were pissed about Phantom Menace? Because we spent 16 years watched the most celebrated film trilogy in cinema history. You know why people were pissed about Crystal Skull? Because we spent 19 years celebrating the most popular adventure series with arguably the most popular movie hero in cinema history. You know what Tron was? A film nobody liked in 1982 and hardly anybody knew about before TL was announced a few years back. Even TODAY, when I saw this movie and told some girls (for Tron dorks, see: human beings with vaginas) what movie I was seeing they had absolutely no idea what the hell I was talking about. Even some of my guy friends hadn't really paid any attention to it. Tron nerds: get over it - nobody cares. You are the city of Cleveland and Buffalo. You are the Sega Saturn. You are mini discs. OS/2 Warp thinks you should get over yourselves.

The fact of the matter is that anybody who was so patently offended by this movie most likely has one or more of the following characteristics: (a) has never had sex before; (b) lives in their parents' basement; (c) is grossly overweight; (d) hates their job; (e) has thought about suicide; and (f) thinks that if only they had the right connections they'd be a famous hollywood writer/producer/director.

Oh, and as for that "obnoxious" Ducati product placement (there's also a nokia one this tool bag failed to mention), it's no more ridiculous than product placements that have littered hollywood films for the past 20 years. A single frame of a Michael Bay flick has more product placement than TL. The only reason anyone would get fired up about this one is because they possess the characteristics I outlined above.

It's a 7-7.5/10 movie. If you're grading it on fun factor it's about an 8 and in its best moments it's actually excellent. Don't let yourself be jaded by the internet goofballs on this one - it's definitely worth catching in theatres and the IMAX 3D (the real IMAX) was terrific.

I was really impressed with this movie. I saw Tron once and somewhat enjoyed it, but it was no revelatory experience for me. I was surprised at how much this was an actual sequel to Tron, and not a rebrand/reboot with a Jeff Bridges cameo.

The CLU scenes actually worked. The de-aging effect was noticeable but didn't pull me out of the movie.

I was surprised at how "deep" they went with it. It's Disney Deep, but it had some actual comment on corporate politics--funny how the Disney Empire is guilty of prostituting their products with ridiculous prices and tricks like Encom is doing--and the idea of playing God with technology. The dad/son dynamic was sort of lacking, but i guess people aren't paying to see the maturation and complexities of the kevin flynn character. it was sort of sweet that sam and kevin were so happy to see each other, but i expected a more conflicted sam flynn.

I saw it in "2D"...should i see it in 3D?

Not exactly fair to pigeonhole naysayers like that - if you're a big fan of something, nothing will live up to your rose-tinted views on that thing. It'll happen with anything, and I'm sure there are plenty who are angry about the movie - not deservedly so, mind you (it was a fun movie) - who feel let down. I don't agree with them (in fact, I still haven't actually seen Tron), but it's not an unjustifiable feeling.

I saw it in "2D"...should i see it in 3D?

It doesn't gain a lot by the 3D, in my opinion. I heard a lot about what 3D added to it, but I probably wouldn't have enjoyed it any less - I don't think the spectacle would have been lost had I seen it in 2D. It didn't work well the way movies like Up or How to Train Your Dragon have worked in 3D. Mind you, I have very indiscriminate tastes in movies, so take that for what it's worth.

the $300 million budget was debunked at slashfilm. it ended up being $170 million. usually half of which is marketing. but you are correct, a $47 million opening weekend is shameful. it would have been even less if they hadn't pulled the original Tron off the shelves and made most people forget what a shit movie that was to begin with!

Back in the early mid 1990's I was lucky enough to catch Tron: The Movie at a $1 Matinee Theater. Despite my age at the time I found the film perfectly encapsulated the early 1980's digital age dawning.

From all the video shown I am not getting that same vibe from Tron: Legacy. What I am getting is Tron: Returns to the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull - passing a franchise baton off while wrapping it around a re-telling of the first Tron film. As others have pointed out the first Tron should have been re-released with expanded environments and I hate saying this re-converted to 3D.

I'm not sure if this is worth a trip to the theater this week but a telesync will be worth a upload to Film

I caught the IMAX 3D presentation of the film and came away more or less satisfied. The music was great. The visual effects were off the charts. The action scenes were fairly intense. But I was confused about the story. I'd like to see some parts over again to better comprehend what exactly was going on.

I really liked Zeus or what's his face with the cane. He kinda stole the show.

My 4 year old and I really enjoyed it. The big reveal at the end was a let down and the whole last quarter of the movie was sort of rushed, but I enjoyed the flashbacks and the basic retelling of the first movie.

I spent all last week driving my in-laws around. In a blizzard. Because I have a PhD in Driveology, and am easily abused. Still, I agree the season hasn't allowed me much free time to sit down and watch a movie. Except porn. Because you have to prioritize, people. I still want to see this, though. Can anyone confirm/deny after viewing, does the IMAX 3D version offer a substantial enough experiential bonus to warrant the inflated ticket price? I'm considering, but I'm a broke ass.

Benovite wins round one, as the shoolyard-like low-blow by CoGro in insulting ones ego, ergo and albeit himself with a glorified typewriter, almost results in a DQ. Terrific use of the 'ICE BURN' emoticon and a consistent theme with the scorekeeping motif makes the Aussie's performance my favorite thusfar. I am hopeful that someone can throw in a nazi reference or two to keep this entertaining, however. Is this battle in the film?

Personally, I feel the original does reach 'cult classic' status, considering A)the audience of passionate 'fans' is limited, b) with a broad familiarity amongst a typically trendy subset (nerds), and 3)It's somewhat obscurity to the general public. If anything, it may fall into trouble in #3, as perhaps too many people of the overall exposure pool, who don't fall into the first two categories, may be aware of it. Moreso than in whatever narrow definition of a 'cult classic' we are using these days. So, to me, it qualifies. And obviously I get laid all the time.

I made a mistake paying extra and traveling to another nearby city for the IMAX 3D experience. I won't be doing that again any time soon.

The only time 3D feels worth it is when it's done for those exclusive documentaries like Hubble 3D or the upcoming Born To Be Wild 3D. The effect is much more noticeable and dramatic for those films for some reason.
