EXCLUSIVE: Gary Oldman is joining Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes, the Matt Reeves-directed sequel to Fox‘s successful ape reboot Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes. Zero Dark Thirty‘s Jason Clarke and Kodi-Smit McPhee have already been set. I’m told that Oldman will play Dreyfus, leader of the human resistance after the apes have taken power. Fox has set the film for release on May 23, 2014.

Official press release and synopsis:

http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fansites/ ... s/?a=79145

Twentieth Century Fox announced that principal photography is underway on Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. A growing nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar is threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier. They reach a fragile peace, but it proves short-lived, as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as Earth's dominant species.

Andy Serkis, celebrated for his performance in the last film, reprises his role as Caesar. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes also stars Jason Clarke (Zero Dark Thirty, Public Enemies, The Great Gatsby), Gary Oldman (The Dark Knight Rises, The Harry Potter film series), Keri Russell (The Americans, Mission Impossible III), Toby Kebbell (The Prince of Persia, Wrath of the Titans, Rock N Rolla), Kodi Smit-McPhee (Let Me In, ParaNorman), Enrique Murciano (Traffic, Black Hawk Down), Kirk Acevedo (The Thin Red Line) and Judy Greer (The Descendants, Three Kings, 13 Going on 30).

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is directed by Matt Reeves (Cloverfield, Let Me In). The producers are Peter Chernin, Dylan Clark (Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Oblivion), Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver (Rise of the Planet of the Apes). Tom Hammel (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) is executive producing.

Oscar®-winning visual effects house WETA Digital – employing a new generation of the cutting edge performance capture technologies developed for Rise of the Apes and Avatar – will again render photo-realistic, emotionally-engaging apes. The film’s key behind-the-scenes team includes director of photography Michael Seresin, production designer James Chinland, and VFX Supervisors Joe Letteri and Dan Lemmon, VFX producers Ryan Stafford, editor Bill Hoy and Stan Salfas, and costume designer Melissa Brunning.

Twentieth Century Fox will release Dawn of the Planet of the Apes worldwide on Memorial Day weekend, May 23, 2014. Rise of the Planet of the Apes opened theatrically during the summer of 2011, grossed nearly half a billion dollars worldwide.

:metal:

The first movie was awesome, can't wait for the sequel. Movies like this make me frustrated to watch though. I have a whole 'post-apocalypse' plan for world-domination. Clearly I have been killed off by the virus in this sequel :P

Still, sounds good so far. Thanks for sharing!

An enticing little trailer. Not too much, not too little.

Caesar's fierce stare and the slow zoom-out that accompanies it reminded me of Stanley Kubrick.

Bandersnatch is on top of this fucker like stink on an ape!

I'd be so much more in love with this franchise if it started with Rise of...

The films from the 60s and 70s dilude the product for me. Don't quite get all the hubbub. Those examples of cheap, low-quality filmmaking don't match the conceptual ambition of the series.

Yeah, I agree the 1970's sequels were cheap and silly. But I've always loved the original PotA, and have a strange fascination with "Beneath." But this prequel/reboot/whatever has deepened the whole franchise for me.

Yeah, so just came back from this and it might be one of the best sci-fi movies ever made.

If you don't see this, you're an idiot. That's my review.

I just came back from seeing this, and absolutely loved it. I was really pleasantly surprised at the number of quiet or contemplative dialogue scenes. I was captivated from start to finish.

I found this interview with Matt Reeves in which he says there will be an Extended Cut in the future. Good news, since my one and only problem with this movie was that I kept unintentionally thinking of scenes that were in the trailers that weren't in the movie:
