Agreed. I felt a chill when I saw TDK first pic with the black eyes... This looks like a bad EDM band makeup. "I am the firestarter"

I think the movies are being guided by Warner Brothers and not DC.

For whatever reason, I get more of a Misfits vibe from the image than a Keith Flint one. Though, I agree you have a point, Hokusai.

I wasn't a big fan of Nolan's look for Joker until I saw Ledger's performance. With Leto, I was hoping for a The Dark Knight Returns Bowie-esque vibe. That being said, I will reserve judgement until I know more about the film.

So far, I appreciate the concept of Warner making an anti-Avengers movie and think it's a good idea to try an original take on a classic villain. After all when it comes to Joker, no one will ever top Hamill, Ledger, or even Nicholson.

So much for the tats not being in the film. Frank Miller's influence extends from the Batman vs. Superman to this movie. Cool.

Even though Joker treated Harley like garage on the animated series, I was surprised by the backhand.

After re-watching "Mad Love," I realize that shouldn't have been surprised by the backhand. Joker does the same thing in that classic episode.

The below explanation about Batman's role in the film seems spot-on for the character.

"You see Batman is totally against the concept behind the Suicide Squad, in fact he warns Waller that he will hold her personally responsible for any innocents The Joker & the rest of the Suicide Squad kill. A warning so stern that he has to visit Waller personally to deliver the message."

That's a really well-done trailer. It makes me want to watch the full movie right this moment.

I wonder if they're going with Harley's traditional back-story or the alternative origin that Paul Dini wrote for "The Batman" animated show (episode link: "Two of a Kind").

Uninteresting plot, poor pacing/editing and a lame villain seem to be the themes of the day. Leto's Joker is not getting any love either, from what I've read many are saying he's a major disappointment.

Throw in this latest report about the film's issues behind the scenes and it just goes to prove once more that WB is clueless as to handle these properties.

I really feel for the DC fans. It sucks to see your beloved franchise(s) continually mishandled. For me it's Transformers so I can totally sympathize.

Ugh; WB's cut a more upbeat "general audience" friendly version of the movie. The darker film may be a mess as well. But, it can't be as incoherent as the final edit I've been reading about.

I guess it was simply luck that WB's didn't interfere with Nolan's movies.

I know what you meant. I was taking a longer view. Meaning, I am considering any DC film that wasn't helmed by Nolan. In that sense, you can go back to Superman Returns. So, it's really 0 / 5.

In other news: Jared Leto: They cut “a lot” of my Joker scenes out of ‘Suicide Squad'

It was exceedingly average. It wasn't as nonsensical as BvS but seriously, the management at this studio is incompetent. No reason why they shouldn't have hit one out of the park by now.

It was probably a good thing so much of Leto was cut. Joker was not integral to this plot and I think that was wise direction.

Harley Quinn was the standout part. I liked Cara Delevingne as Enchantress too and holy shit, Viola Davis owned her character.

My memory of Man of Steel is muddy. I would say yes, the script is more coherent. I liked that the scale of this film was constrained.

That's not to say this is a great story. Little to no character development there and motivations varied even shot to shot in the same scene! It was dumb fun that I'll likely never watch again.

I thought the move was a fun summer movie. It was good for a DC movie.

Jared Leto's joker is overrated.....I just don't see it. He's not the joker in my book.
Robie's Harley is pretty good.
Smith's Deadshot is decent as well.
Jai Courntey can choke on a donkey dong.
Kitana was barely used.
Killer Croc was meh.

Amanda Waller was just brutal.

The movie has made planetary revenue of $267 million. So, success!

Yesterday, I watched Batman: Assault on Arkham. Despite a logic bomb in the plot, it's a largely snarkily witty Task Force X movie. Meaning, it's the positive opposite of Suicide Squad. Overall, it's funny how WB’s animated movies seem to be mainly on-point while the live action stuff is a disappointing mixed bag.

That being said, I’m not happy with how The Killing Joke turned-out. If not for the Bat-sex scene, the prologue would have passed for good. The adaption itself is handled wrong, however. I watched the movie and then re-read the book (which might be may favorite Bat-book ever). Moore's writing is indeed wordy. But, if you follow the pacing of Brian Bolland’s imagery – there’s no issue. The script for the animated adaptation kept a good portion Moore's words, but the director doesn’t seem to understand how to marry the tempo of the dialogue with the animation. Plus, the movie makes a few unnecessary changes like: adding dialogue from Batman Begins and The Dark Knight; adding a trial sequence; giving "the freaks” an action scene; placing the camera on the Redhood gang rather than the Joker as he finds out his wife has passed; and playing-up the potential rape on Barbara. It’s shame for the source material and the performances. Conroy (as usual) is tone perfect, and Hamill is amazing. Between the flashbacks and present-day scenes, it’s almost as if Hamill is giving two performances in the movie.

I was also disappointed by Killing Joke, and agree with basically everything you said about it. Conroy and Hamill on point but it lacked oomph, and the direction was especially poor. They didn't do anything inspiring with the source material; they just tried to adapt it panel for panel and it didn't work. The Ace Chemicals scene should have been told from Joker's POV: he should have felt scared, and seen a demon-like Batman (almost like how it played in Arkham Origins, which was a subpar game but adapted that sequence beautifully).

Assault on Arkham was pretty solid and DC largely does better with their animated work. I'd argue that Rocksteady games has done DC better than anyone since TDK. While Suicide Squad was a commercial success in its first weekend, DC is in a world of hurt creatively. As far as I'm concerned the DCEU is an unfixable mess, but if you're WB you're actually looking to Aquaman and Wonder Woman to salvage the franchise. Saying that out loud is kind of unbelievable.

If Wonder Woman, Justice League and Acquaman bomb with critics and audiences they've got to consider starting over don't they? I know Transformers keeps bringing back Michael Bay even though he's destroyed the credibility of that franchise but DC's gotta protect their brand, right? Especially when Marvel is killing it.

SS was OK at best. It started off well enough with the introduction of each character, but fell away badly in the third act.

Man of Steel clearly the best DCEU movie so far.

One statement above summed up my take on the film:

"...dumb summer fun that I'll never see again."

Quinn was a memorable character. Well acted, fairly well-written. The whole thing just felt like a gigantic mess. Music is always a big thing with me, and it felt like they were trying too hard to make a "hip" soundtrack. Music got in the way of a scene more often than it enhanced a scene.

The Marvel movies exist on the 4th "ring" of movie franchises I love/follow (1. Star Wars 2. Indiana Jones 3. Nolan Batman), and each Marvel film has been a first-day Bluray purchase for me. Suicide Squad doesn't warrant a purchase for me.

Yeah, it's definitely Transformers-like.

I forgot about that sequence in Origins. Great idea.

I agree with your point on the Rocksteady games. I think having Dini involved with the first two games was big help to the Arkham franchisee.

Wonder Wonder might have the best chance at being a solid film. Based on the trailers, it seems like a lot of thought and care has gone into the characters and story.

Re: Suicide Squad

Postby CoGro » August 8th 2016 9:46 pm

Just got out. It might have been worse than BvS. Thoughts to follow.

Alright, really quick (I'm sure we'll all dig into this as the days go on):

This was the most obvious case of studio meddling I've seen in a long time. It was such a disaster, such a mess of filmmaking that I'm embarrassed for Warner Bros and DC that they released the movie in this state. It's the worst of the DC movies and that's saying something. This had Age of Extinction-level issues with pacing and plotting. Maybe even worse. The best thing it has going for it is that it's literally an abortion that does not need to have any impact on the greater DCEU. I mean Leto's Joker is bad but at least the myth making and world-building doesn't have to impact what WB is doing with the rest of the franchise. WB is literally trying their hardest to make DC a B-level franchise. This garbage isn't even enjoyable as dumb summer fun; it's just depressing and lifeless.

What worked:

- Margot Robbie is a perfect fit as Harley, but she didn't chew scenery because of how poorly written the movie is. Nice to see her in classic jester costume.
- Will Smith as Will Smith -er- Deadshot. He makes a good leading man and with a better script he would have been perfectly serviceable as a sympathetic bad guy. I thought they nailed the look of the character (especially with the mask) and I got a thrill out of seeing the arm cannons.
- They nailed Amanda Waller.
- Killer Croc.
- Ace Chemicals looking like Ace Chemicals.
- Arkham Asylum looking like Arkham Asylum.

WTF:

- I remember Ayer said that Batman is going to be legitimately scary in Suicide Squad. I don't know what movie he thought he was making because in the one I watched Batman gave Deadshot a chance to come quietly so he doesn't get embarrassed in front of his daughter. Yeah, what a monster. Harley also seemed legit terrified when she turned CPR into a french kiss.
- A lot is wrong with Leto's performance and the characterization of the Joker in this universe. He tries to ape Ledger in the way he talks and it instantly reminded me of a better performance in a better movie. His design is awful - not scary or intimidating, just juvenile and different for the sake of it.
- Joker's romance with Harley is all wrong and uninteresting. He's not supposed to be madly in love with her: he's supposed to be a psychopath that would just as soon shoot her to save himself as he would beg her to take him back after he betrays her. Harley's been driven mad and manipulated into being part of an abusive relationship because Joker is a fucking monster. In this movie, he's a loving and overprotective boyfriend. The filmmakers don't understand this dynamic at all.

I hate what WB did with this universe.

yeah it's hard to disagree with any of that CoGro.

I liked the squad dynamics but geez the "mission" that was conveniently laid out for them 5 mins after forming da skwad was ridiculous.

Ayers has hinted there's up to 3 different cuts of this movie. I wouldn't be surprised if there were more. I smell an "Ultimate Edition" blu-ray already.

Trouble on Wonder Woman? Wouldn't be surprised if true. In fact, I'd be shocked if it was going well based on WB's track record.

Whatever. Fuck those guys. I'm actively rooting for more clusterfucks and you should too. Then maybe they'll reboot the universe and give it to someone who gives a shit and has a brain like Paul Dini.

It worked for Spider-man. Now the wall crawler actually has a chance with Marvel.

Suicide Squad had a BvS-like second weekend collapse of 67%. Who knows if this actually sends a message, though since it's not like WB is going to cancel Christmas and scrap its slate of films that takes them to 2020.

Unbelievable this stayed #1 at the B.O. three weeks in a row. No doubt shitty competition played a large factor (Ben Hur? Really? Stop fucking with the classics!) but it's also doing better numbers wise than Guardians of the Galaxy was at this same time when it was playing. Mind boggling.
