Spoilers & Speculation for Upcoming Films

Alien: Covenant • 2017

Postby Thundercracker » September 25th 2015 3:58 pm

Ridely Scott has revealed that Prometheus 2 is titled Alien: Paradise Lost apparently making it much more of a prequel to the original Alien that Prometheus 1 was.

EMPIRE - Ridley Scott Talks Alien: Paradise Lost

Years ago, I kept mulling over what Alien 2 could be. I was fiddling around with some ideas. I was always fascinated with why this thing [the xenomorph] would be made, by whom, and for what purpose? The planet it was on – and I was looking at the dark side of the moon – would be called Paradise. Paradise is a very ominous word...

In a way it is Prometheus 2. It’s exactly the same story. But it was always in the works to be called that [Alien: Paradise Lost]. Is Prometheus actually taking us off course from where I’m going, which is actually backing into the first Alien... I’ve even got connections with Ripley [in this], but I’m not telling you what.

HeyUGuys - Ridley Scott reveals title of Prometheus 2

Actually, it’s going to be called Alien: Paradise Lost, so Prometheus 2 isn’t what it’s really going to be. You know the poem? I doubt you’ve ever been through it, have you? The poem’s a book, Paradise Lost! It sounds intellectual, but there’s a similarity to it, and that’s where it stops.

Thoughts?

Ridley's making this up as he goes and the studio stepped in to call it 'Alien.'

Interesting. I hope it doesn't suck.

I didn't think Prometheus sucked, I just thought it was a tad misguided. Another example of miscalculation in the editing room. All 30 minutes of deleted scenes could have been kept in, and it would have made for a more coherent narrative.

Prometheus was pretty bad, yo.

Nothing made any sense. It was just a sequence of events that happened with no apparent relevance to each other.

So I guess the title has been changed to Alien: Covenant.

New logo & synopsis:

Image

Ridley Scott returns to the universe he created in ALIEN with ALIEN: COVENANT, the second chapter in a prequel trilogy that began with PROMETHEUS — and connects directly to Scott’s 1979 seminal work of science fiction. Bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, the crew of the colony ship Covenant discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world — whose sole inhabitant is the “synthetic” David (Michael Fassbender), survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition.

20th Century Fox.

What's unclear is whether Ridley will continue to pursue his other two prequels that lead into Alien. The announcement makes it seem like this will take the story right up to the original film.

Ridley Scott apparently first dropped the name change in an interview with Indiewire at the AFI film festival. 20th Century Fox then officially announced it today, it's on their twitter feed.

A classic case of Scott changing his mind and getting back on the ALIEN bandwagon. I'm a fan of Prometheus but I can see how it ostracised fans. Didn't help that Scott was so fckn vague in his synopsis of the film - it's an Alien movie! but it's not actually an Alien movie! but it's in the same universe! blah blah

Now everything has come around full circle. They've added ALIEN to the title and changed Paradise Lost to the ship name keeping in line with Prometheus.

With Blomkamp teasing Alien 5 lately I think it kicked Scott into gear. "Hands off it's my Alien franchise I'm gonna make another 5 sequels" whatever bro

First Alien: Covenant trailer promises blood, gore and intense Xenomorph action!

Trailer is probably coming with Assassin's Creed.

This is a good site for keeping up with the production.

You're welcome.

I feel the same about Prometheus.

It's okay, but with all the hype about Scott returning to science fiction and everything, not to mention the fact that I followed the production in a way that I haven't since the prequels, I must say that it was a big disappointment overall.

This new film is bothering me as well. The Paradise title was/is better. It looks like Noomi's role is merely a cameo, and now there is this news... :(

James Franco secretly cast in Alien: Covenant!

I fucking loathe this dick. :ass2mouth:

this movie is filled with just as much bullshit as Prometheus was.

full movie Spoilers below:
Your Mother's vagina
Image

Image

Image

There are apparently 3 different "Aliens" that we will see, a "Proto-morph", a "Neo-morph" and the classic "Xeno-Morph" at the end. The big spoiler is that DAVID is the creator of the Aliens. Once he and Shaw from Prometheus land on the Engineer's homeworld called Paradise, David begins his experiments with the black goo in order to create the "perfect organism." He unleashes the bio-weapon / spores onto the Engineers which wipes them all out. He then proceeds to further experiment which leads to Shaw's death but before she dies she sends out a distress beacon which the Covenant ship responds to. The Covenant spaceship lands which gives David all the more hosts to experiment on with his newly created eggs with facehugger suprise inside. The first to "hatch" is the one seen in the movie coming out the guy's back. The short spindly pale guy with two spikes on his back. He erupts from dude's back and runs on all fours like a dog. Another later decides to come back up through a guy's throat and explode his head.

There is also another "David" android named Walter that arrives on the Covenant. David apparently as his final experiment, infects Walter which creates the bio-mechanical Xenomorph we all know and love.

Oh, I almost forgot. The main chick from the Covenant spaceship... That's Ripley's MOM. :funkyvflamethrower:

i've done some more digging and the ending i posted earlier appears wrong.
David doesn't experiment on Walter, he switches places and pretends to BE Walter at the end as the surviving crew makes their way back to the Covenant. There the crew go back into hyper sleep as David/Walter sneaks on board 2 proto-morph embryos as it is revealed there are thousands of crew still in hypersleep. film ends.

From what I've read, I believe so. The short film stops short of showing an event that's in the film. It'd be weird to not establish the lead-up for general audiences who may not have caught the short.

No the prologue in it's entirety is NOT in the film. That being said we find out exactly what happens to Dr.Shaw and why David dropped the pathogen (black goo) on the Engineers home world. The movie references Prometheus but I found not every loose end was wrapped up.

This is definitely Prometheus 2. It did not live up to either it's predecessor or Alien. Ridley forgot we needed tension in an Alien film?

The David/Walter dynamic is the best part of the script. There is definitely setup for additional film(s).

It pains me to say that I think this franchise's goose is cooked.

The production design is fantastic, there are a few great callbacks to the original (music, the naturalistic staging of the crew's interactions, etc), and Tennessee is a good character with a great performance by Danny McBride. But these prequels are asking and answering a question that fundamentally destroys the impact of the xenomorph as a movie monster. It's far less intimidating, and defangs the beast in a huge way, to make "aliens" the result of an AI's genetic tinkering. The title of this franchise literally makes no sense anymore.

Prometheus is flawed, but asked some fairly decent questions that Covenant flat out ignores (why did the Engineers want to destroy humanity? What was it they were running from in that hologram?) This new film not only introduces its own set of plot holes and gaps in narrative logic (did David wipe out all the Engineers? Was this entire civilization of advanced outer space travellers based in one single location?), but also creates an even more convoluted timeline to get to the 1979 original. How did the derelict get to LV-426? If the Engineers are all gone, why is one piloting that ship? Why is it filled with David's eggs? Wasn't that Engineer "fossilized?" Wouldn't that mean it's thousands of years old? I just don't like the myth-building Sir Ridley is writing here.

Maybe I could swallow all this if the film was legitimately scary and thrilling, but instead it was predictable and followed age-old horror tropes. Worse, the CGI creatures took me totally out of the movie and completely destroyed the sense of dread or peril I should have felt. I just...I don't know what's at work here. In an interview to promote Covenant, Ridley takes a shot at Star Wars and the prequels in particular. I'm no defender of the PT, but the pot is definitely calling the kettle black.

Thanks for the link.

I don't hear him taking a shot at the prequels. The interviewer, not Ridley, pulls "Phantom Menace" out of his ass for no reason. Ridley was simply restating something he's said for nearly 40 years. When he saw Star Wars, he was depressed because he wanted to do something like it. So he decided against doing a film of Tristan and Isolde, and was offered Alien.

FINALLY just saw this last night, via Amazon Video streaming.

I liked it, and damn near loved it, more than I thought I would. Better than Prometheus, which I started to enjoy less and less the more I saw it, but didn't hate like some folks seemed to. This as stated is clearly a sequel to Prometheus, yet still doesn't completely bridge the gap twixt this and Alien. The cliff-hanger ending to Covenant really leaves me wanting more, which is obviously the point. I'm really curious to see what happens next in this timeline.

The alien/body horror sequences felt painfully perfunctory which I found somewhat amusing, daring and understandable. The real stars of the show were clearly David and Walter but more specfically, David. I hands-down love that angle to this whole developing new mythology. More interesting than what I've always thought were those silly, awkward-looking and wholly unscary xenomorphs. They look blind and imbalanced with the exception of Stan Winston's queen of 'em. Maybe the more humanoid, pale one in Covenant was a step in the right direction.

But it makes me think Ridley Scott has a peculiarly singular artificial intelligence fetish because of all the concurrent Blade Runner activity.
