I was pretty put off by the "Wooooah!!" myself.

Honestly, are we really going to fuss about generic lines of dialog? There was nothing offensive there:

"You don't know anything about me"

"We all need to run"

"You must face them, fight them"

"You sure you're up for this?"

"Hell no"

I don't really get your concern. Now if Han had said "Get General Binks on com!" I'd have something to worry about.

What's lame about it?

Why?

I agree that this is all pretty standard Star Warsy dialogue.

I REALLY don't want to be that fan, but "Hell no" gave me some pause. I don't think it's a big deal at all, just surprised to hear it. It sounds so contemporary. I guess it's not too different from Han saying "I'll see you in hell!" or something.

I swore I'd stop watching these TV spots. This was the last one!

At least it wasn't: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9o19CaOSuD8

I will say this: if Finn speaks in an urban dialect at any point in any of these movies, it easily supplants the antics of Jar Jar as "the most destructive element to the Star Wars fantasy."

Came back to see if there were any interesting comments in response to these recent GL interviews and saw this wonderful slice of Star Wars fandom:

CoGro wrote:I will say this: if Finn speaks in an urban dialect at any point in any of these movies, it easily supplants the antics of Jar Jar as "the most destructive element to the Star Wars fantasy."

Wow. :what:

I think you mean to say, "the most destructive element to my racially exclusive fantasy." Do you take similar offense to Han's yokely rural drawl in ANH? Or the snobbish non-rhotic accents (look up the history of that manner of speaking!) of the imperials and Obi-Wan throughout the OT?

I'm starting to think that CoGro is this forum's latent (old) bearvomit. Which is a damn shame because he has such other admirable and impressive qualities as a poster here.

I didn't see it as a race thing at all. Not even going to talk about "urban dialects". But I'm thinking I like Finn's line now. It shows the dialogue and character moments will have some energy that the last three Star Wars movie completely lacked.

This is how we keep busy as we wait out the last four weeks....

 Don't make this a race issue because you want to play PC police. And don't be a fucking idiot and intentionally ignore the point I was making so you could perch yourself on a holier than though soapbox.

You and I both know there's a difference between an accent and an exaggerated dialect.

There are no overt contemporary Earthly slangs used in any of the movies (that includes Cockney, Southern American, East Coasters or Midwesterners). The Star Wars galaxy has maintained a fairly neutral interpretation of the English language when spoken by humans. I believe this is deliberately intentional to suspend disbelief and not bring the fantasy "back to Earth."

Not to mention when Star Wars decides to play with dialects that can be interpreted as racist or depicting racial caricatures, it faces harsh criticism (see: Jar Jar, Nute Gunray, et al).

Now go play in the shallow end.

I'm old enough to remember seeing the original Star Wars in 1977 (I was 12 at the time), and one of the many fun things in that movie back then was this very contemporary smart ass coming in and spouting off very contemporary phrases ("not this ship, sister" / "what the hell are you doing?" etc), and rolling his contemporary eyes at his bizarre surroundings.

So to me "overt contemporary Earthly slangs," anachronisms, and colloquialisms have always been a part of Star Wars.

CoGro, that fairly neutral interpretation of the English language you assert has been informed by predominantly white, male crew and talent. Saying that any deviation from that is not the disbelief-suspending and non-earthly nature of Star Wars smacks of treating the way white males speak as unmarked, normative and "neutral." That can lead to seeing other ways of speaking as deviant, othered and as offensive as to even be boldly dismissed as "destructive." I strongly believe that was precisely the point of GL's Jar Jar experiment, by the way.

PC police. Holier than though soapbox. I'm just trying (and it's not easy) to be more sensitive, reflect non-racist attitudes and, quite frankly, be more contemporary. Not only anonymously on here but in real life too. The world needs that right now.

Give it up a little and "just let it in." You'll probably be less bitter.

Can’t quite believe what I’m reading on here over the past 24 hours…c’mon guys, lets settle this down a little & get back on topic…this is what spoils Star Wars, over analysing & taking things way out of context.

Let’s keep the posts about what we all enjoy, the discussion & shared experiences of our favourite movies.
I fully understand everyone has an entitled opinion but please let’s keep this forum fun & fresh.
There’s enough bad shit happening in the world at the minute without aggression on here as well.

Wrong. The English language has grammar rules. It doesn't discriminate based on race or gender. It just is. Dialects that deviate from those rules are not necessarily racially-driven. I don't give a shit about race or accents, my point is about being distracted by dialects that too easily trigger a reference to Earth's culture.

:vfuckoff: Thanks for being such a freedom fighter.

You're the type of asshole that paints people in broad strokes. Every time someone criticizes a distinctive feature of a social group, minority group or another race, they must be racist. Or maybe I just don't want everyday oversaturated cultural references in my space fantasy.

I'm offended by you, and people like you. And I'm done with this discussion.

Good to see someone else gets it. It just felt un-star wars to me. But surely a super microscopic nitpick. I get it.
