Cool.

It has a shot at VFX but will likely lose the others. I think Mad Max is going to clean up on the technical awards.

I'm very happy TFA is getting recognized in this way, but the Best Musical Score has me perplexed.

IMO, this was the least-memorable of the 7 existing Star Wars scores. There were highlights, like Rey's Theme, Jedi Steps, and Torn Apart, but for my money, it doesn't come close to ROTS or any of the original 3. Having said that, I'm thrilled to see TFA rope in this many nominations.

It hadn't occurred to me until just now, that TFA is the first Star Wars movie since 1977 to have this many Academy Award nominations:

I don't really believe TFA deserves any technical recognition, and I doubt it will actually be rewarded with anything. I hope Williams gets something though.

Not surprised, nor do I care, that TFA didn't win anything.

As I predicted, Mad Max took home the majority of the technical awards and rightfully so. I do think that while Ex Machina had some impressive VFX, TFA probably executed more and a larger variety of visual tricks. Then again, the more tricks you try and tackle the more they get lost on the viewer. Large VFX-heavy pictures have been taken for granted so it's only when we see a smaller film use VFX well do we stop and consider the achievement.

The visual effects in Ex Machina were entirely about building a thoughtful character. Well deserving of the win IMO.

I'll agree with Topeka. It seemed that this year was about less wow, and how effects could be hidden to add the plot.

Mad Max so deserved that win. Glad to see them take home some metal.
