I didn't see an existing thread so here it is.

Release Date: May 6th 2016


Lots of conjecture around the title of the 3rd film, with "Fallen Son" and "Civil War" being the popular picks. RDJ has recently signed on to star in more than just a cameo role fuelling the flames that the Civil War thread will be picked up and run with. Could be more of a "team-up" or a "verses" movie?



Interesting points:

SHIELD in the shitter - things not looking good here for Nick and the gang. Events in AoU not looking too bright either.

TWS - On the loose, but looking like coming over to the good guys.

Red Skull - Was sent packing into another realm at the end of Cap I. Could play a part here, or later on the MCU but defo haven't seen the last of him.

HYDRA - still a threat, but in what capacity still unclear.

Steve Rogers - With titles like Fallen Son being heavily rumoured, could it be Bucky takes the mantle in Avengers III? Chris Evans is only contracted to 1 or 2 more Marvel films.

The Russos hit it out of the park with TWS so I'm really excited to see where they go with Cap 3. I am a bit reserved on the RDJ news. I just hope this doesn't end up feeling like IM4 with a guest appearance by Steve Rogers instead of what it should actually be; a proper solo Cap sequel.

I'm not a big fan of the comic Civil War story but since Marvel hasn't really ever adapted a comic story verbatim I'm sure it will be more 'in name only' borrowing elements from that story while crafting something totally new. I could see the the Superhero Registration Act from that story coming into play but without the secret identity aspect since most of the MCU's heroes don't have secret identities. Following the fallout from AoU, and Stark being largely responsible for it the government would probably want to start having more control over superheroes requiring them to register.

Adding to SI's list, there's plenty of threads left from TWS that can and should be explored.

Brock Rumlow - Survived albeit extra crispy. Bring on Crossbones.

Sharon Carter/Agent 13 - She only shared brief screentime with Steve in TWS but I'd expect she'll probably be the new romantic interest.

Arnim Zola - The guy cheated death by transferring his mind into an A.I. I doubt he was gonna stand by and let a missile strike wipe him out. He could have uploaded himself onto the net or into a backup location.

Hydra - The Avengers will be dealing with Baron Von Strucker and Hydra early on in AoU so we'll have to see what Hydra's status is after that conflict. I doubt they'll be totally wiped out. Meanwhile, AoS will continue running the whole Hydra threat into the ground during season 2.

Red Skull - I'm a big Red Skull fan so I would love to see him make a return. A lot of fans have been lobbying for Zemo but I feel having the Skull make a comeback would tie the Cap trilogy together nicely. It's just a question of how they would bring him back considering he was teleported to parts unknown and Hugo Weaving has expressed disinterest in reprising the role. Logistics of his return aside, perhaps they could do a Dell Rusk scenario with Skull masquerading as a senator who initiates the registration act in an attempt to bring the heroes and gifted individuals under his and Hydra's thumb. Whatever, just spit balling.

Having been years since I read it, wasn't 'Civil War' ultimately to have been caused by the Skrulls? Didn't they infiltrate the Illuminati or some such gimmicky thing and cause it all? Skrull Tony orchestrated shooting the Hulk off into space (Planet Hulk, live action gold right there Disney wtf) and everything after including Civil War, didn't he? Well, him and scandalously drawn Spider-Woman/Skrull Queen (??I think??) So would RDJ be playing an imposter Tony, or the real Tony?

All that makes me wonder if the 'Civil War' rumors aren't really kind of grasping, has there been an official statement using the term at all? If not, I hope they come up with something better. The whole thing was kind of an anti-climactic mess from what I recall. A pretty mess, but still.

I really enjoyed the action of TWS. The fighting scenes were done well, in that 'Bruce Lee-ish', 'stand-back and watch' style where you can see the way people move. Not a bunch of tight shots edited/quick-jammed together to present the illusion of intense fighting. I liked that, hope future films follow suit.

Yeah, Marvel hasn't made an official announcement regarding RDJ's involvement yet. Variety originally reported the story based on their 'sources' and since then every tom, dick and harry comic news site has been reporting Cap 3 as officially being about Civil War.

Well, one has to hope they do better than the comic. Not a tall order, in terms of pleasing the audience. Not that it was 'bad' per se, it was so spread out over so many titles, there was just so much of it. It got tangled in its own feet a bit for me. There were some really rad ideas there too though, so I wouldn't say its a disappointment. I would wonder how they would explain the throngs of heroes involved in the comic's version. Will the cinematic version be equal in scope, is a race of shape-shifters on the horizon? Or have I just missed something?

I would wonder if there must be, I don't know how else they do it without making Iron Man into an idiot, or an actual prick. Neither would sell me on a story in one film. I'd be shocked and impressed if it did. It has happened before though.

The movie is set one year after Ultron’s attack. SHIELD leaks have raised awareness of the circumstances of several incidents such as the Battle of New York, the Mandarin bombings, the Dark Elf invasion, which, in addition to the Hulk rampage in South Africa and Ultron leveling Sokovia, have caused superheroes to experience a sizeable public backlash. Stark is retired from being Iron Man and dedicating himself to philantrophy to atone for his mistakes.

Captain America is leading the New Avengers – Black Widow, Falcon, War Machine, Scarlet Witch and Vision – to take down the remnants of HYDRA and find Bucky, aided by Nick Fury.

The movie opens with them busting a drug deal and recovering some Vibranium-based weaponry. Back to their new headquarters, the Avengers get to mingle. Black Widow is the co-leader, Falcon and Captain America are true bros, and Falcon also has a sort of friendly rivalry with Rhodes since they’re both airmen. Cap is coaching Wanda into dealing with her powers and losing Pietro, and Vision is dealing with his expanding consciousness.

Fury drops by to share some info on Bucky. He’s been killing HYDRA officials all over the globe, and it’s getting hard to keep track of him or cover up his assassinations. Lots of the HYDRA assets he’s offed are power players with seemingly spotless records, and the public wouldn’t understand.

We then see Spider-Man’s first public appearance catching some criminals, which switches to a Congress hearing discussing the matter, with some politicians advocating for the Superhero Registration Act. Stark is in attendance alongside T’Challa, who is acting as a spokesman for Wakanda on the matter of the Vibranium stashes that have been exposed by Ultron’s attack. The UN believes Vibranium to be a dangerous resource and wants to oversee its mining and safekeeping, but T’Challa defends it belongs to his people. The usual political intrigue.

Cap and Stark meet to discuss the Vibranium weapon usage and discuss the concept of Registration, with Stark supporting it and Cap being against it. They discuss their motives. Meanwhile, in HYDRA’s main lair, Zemo kills people who have failed him. Crossbones is there. Zemo says they in fact didn’t fail, but it needed to appear so, because he doesn’t trust anyone. And it’s time to put their plan in motion.

Acting on a tip from one of his contacts, Bucky arrives at a HYDRA outpost in London, where he is ambushed by mercenaries. It’s a set-up. The fight spills into the street, where Crossbones arranges a bombing to make it appear as if Bucky caused it. The explosions kills several people and causes widespread damage. Bucky escapes, and the Avengers move in to clean up the damage. The public outcry is massive, and the SHRA is approved. Stark decides to support it. He has learned from going through SHIELD leaks that Bucky killed his father and wants to bring him in.

In his farm, Hawkeye is attacked and captured by Crossbones, who kills his wife. He’s then taken to HYDRA’s lair and tortured for infomation in Fury’s secret network, which only Barton is privy to, but doesn’t break.

Cap is called to Stark’s office, where he meets CIA asset Peter Gyrich, from London, who has been partnered with Sharon Carter. They announce the Registration has been approved and Cap and his team need to surrender. Cap says “no”. Stark tells Steve he’s bringing Bucky down, Cap says Bucky is innocent, brainwashed and needs help. Gyrich orders soldiers to seize up Cap, but he escapes.

Cap returns to HQ and tells the others what happened. He gets into an argument with Black Widow, who believes they need to register. They exchange harsh words, and when the military come to collect them, Cap leaves with Sam, Wanda and Vision while Natasha and Rhodes stay behind and join the Registration.

Fury sets up the Avengers in a safe house while Stark approaches Spider-Man to join the Registration. Spider-Man confides with Stark his secret identity, and Stark is surprised to learn he’s just a boy. They bond, and Peter mentions Uncle Ben and his mantra that “With great powers, come great responsabilities”. Stark then unveils his team on public TV, while Cap and his team become fugitives. Their top priority is to find Bucky before Stark.

Fury gets a lead on Bucky’s whereabouts and the team heads there, but it is an ambush by Stark and his forces, leading to a fight. Stark has a new Bleeding Edge armor, but Vision holds his own. Scarlet Witch BTFOs some soldiers and Spider-Man, Falcon VS. War Machine, and Cap VS. Widow while she tries to get him to see things from her point of view. Scarlet Witch manages to blow them back long enough for her team to escape and reunite with Fury, who deduces Romanoff used her intel to forge a Bucky sighting to get them into a vulnerable place.

Cap doesn’t want to endanger anyone else, but they all decide to stick to their guns and help him. Stark learns from Rhodes about the Vibranium weapons they busted from HYDRA, and Gyrich reports it to his superiors. They accuse Wakanda of endangering global security by not giving them entrance, and tensions escalate.

Bucky finds out about the Vibranium crisis and goes through his old contacts, eventually locating a HYDRA outpost where they storage Vibranium stolen from Wakanda before shipping it off to the other bases to produce weapons. Stark locates Bucky and tries to bring him in, leading to a fight in which Bucky gets pretty roughed up, but escapes. With no other option, he makes his way to the safe house where Steve is located, which he’s aware of due to his extensive research on the SHIELD leaks, and tells him everything.

The New Avengers patch Bucky up and he and Steve finally talk it out. We get some exposition on Zemo and the reaffirmation of the Steve/Bucky broship. Meanwhile, Stark reports to his superiors about the HYDRA stealing Vibranium from Wakanda to produce weapons. T’Challa assures that they’ll handle it on their own, but the government is undeterred and Gyrich orders the government Avengers to attack Wakanda, which Stark reluctantly agrees to do. Sharon, who is often at odds with Gyrich over his M.O, contacts Fury through a secure line and relays the info to Steve, saying she has faith in him.

Meanwhile, Hawkeye escapes from Zemo’s hold as we’ve established.

Stark’s Avengers arrive on Wakanda to seize the Vibranium, leading to tensions with the Wakanda military despite their efforts to maintain peace. Steve’s Avengers intervene to stop them from causing an international incident and instead shut down the HYDRA outpost collecting Vibranium. Another fight ensues, in which Maria Hill is outed as a mole who sabotages the Bleeding Edge armor, leveling the game for Steve and Stark to have a big fight. The other Avengers fight as well, and it spills into the street.

Steve notices that, while everyone is beating eachother, Spider-Man has peeled off and is rescuing civilians. He realizes they’re fighting for themselves, not for the people, and they need to work together if they want to stop HYDRA. Natasha, who had been having some disagreements with Stark, vouches for Cap as they realize they’re stronger together than apart.

T’Challa intervenes and volunteers to assist them in stopping HYDRA because he wants peace between his father’s country and the United Nations. The Avengers, however, do not find the HYDRA outpost. It was all a dupe so they’d kill each other for Zemo.

Hawkeye manages to contact Fury and report to the location of Zemo’s lair: Switzerland. The Avengers head there and rendzevous with Barton as they mount a massive attack on Zemo’s compound. Zemo orders his men to fight back using Vibranium-based, reverse-engineered weapons from the Chitauri and Ultron, and the battle is fierce.

Hawkeye fights Crossbones and kills him with four arrows, one for each of his dead family members. Black Panther kicks ass. Wanda eventually manages to achieve enough control over her powers she rearranges the molecules of the HYDRA mooks weapons, culling the Vibranium’s special properties and allowing the Avengers to solo them.

Cap and Bucky tag-team Zemo and his Vibranium sword, but Zemo still kicks a lot of ass while rambling about his ideals. He eventually gets defeated and Bucky moves in for the kill, but decides to spare him, and prove that he is more than the assassin HYDRA forced him to become.

Zemo and his men are locked up, and Stark retrieves the location of all of HYDRA’s secret bases. The military move in to dismantle the entire organization, arrest its figureheads and aprehend their weapons and technology.

The Avengers are still wanted, but Stark decides to let them go, and Fury and Jason produce new identities for them to lay low. Vision decides to leave the Earth. Cap decides to surrender, but entrusts his shield to Bucky, so he can always remember who he really is: a hero.

Cap is arrested. Barton finds out his children have survived and leaves with them and brings Wanda along to look out for her as well. Natasha and Rhodes are back with Stark, while Fury disappears once again, now with Hill by his side. Peter realizes he isn’t made to fight in wars, he’s there to look out for the common man, and Stark sends him off, erasing his data from the registry.

Stark BTFOs Gyrich, announces he’s taking over because Gyrich made illegal calls throughout his involvement with the SHRA, and Carter is promoted to his place. Stark visits Cap and they patch things up, Zemo is locked up in the Raft, Natasha visits Cap and they patch things up, Bucky keeps the torch alive.

This looks to be Avengers 2.5. I actually trust the Russo bros more than I do Whedon, so I'm looking forward to their "pre-Avengers" Avengers movie before they take on actual Avengers movies.

Quick thoughts:
-Crossbones suit looks decent. Not quite what I was expecting but still recognizable as Crossbones. The gauntlets may be a bit much though, kinda makes him look like the War Machine armor from a distance. I think the body armor would look better if it wasn't quite as bulky.
-Love ScarJo's new do. Although she still looked hot, I wasn't a big fan of the short hairstyles from the Avengers movies. My favorites were her longer hairstyles from IM2 and TWS.
-The funeral is most likely for Peggy Carter.

They're basically big steel fists no doubt used by Crossbones as a means to try and get a better advantage over Cap in hand to hand combat.

Sidenote: I must have missed it originally but I guess it's been confirmed that Henry Jackman will return as composer. I only bring this up because it will be the first time the same composer has returned to score a sequel in the same title series (which I think needs to happen more often.) While his score on TWS was pretty low key overall, there were many moments I liked and certainly fit in with the mysterious, political thriller atmosphere the film was aiming for.

The new Avengers are in buildings overlooking a crowded market in what appears to be a third-world country. “Eyes on target, folks,” Captain America says. Falcon says, “Red Wing, launch,” and a small drone hovers free and dives down to the street, swooping beneath a truck, which is loaded with explosives. Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson is in a café.) “It’s a battering ram,” she says. The team closes in, and the truck opens up—revealing Crossbones, a.k.a. Brock Rumlow (played by Frank Grillo, from The Winter Soldier). He spots Cap moving in and throws a magnetic bomb onto Cap’s vibranium shield. Cap thinks fast, throwing the shield into the sky just as it detonates.

He is now unarmed, and Crossbones pummels him. The rest of Crossbones’ crew springs to action. Falcon blocks machine gun fire with his wings. Black Widow flips through the air, sending bad guys flying. Crossbones grips Cap and slams him into a concrete wall. He leers at the hero from behind a metallic, skull-shaped masked. “You dropped a building on my face,” he snarls, a reference to the conclusion of The Winter Soldier. Cap rips his gauntlet off and pushes free, then tears off the metal mask. Crossbones kneels, defeated, and mutters: “You know … he remembered you. Your pal … your buddy … Your Bucky.” Turns out, Captain America does have a weak spot.

From there we get the Marvel Studios logo and cut to William Hurt as Secretary of State Thaddeus Ross—the former general, known as the nemesis of The Incredible Hulk. “The world owes you an unpayable debt,” Ross says as images of past heroism play onscreen. “While a great many people see you as a hero, there are some who prefer the word vigilante. People are afraid.” Cap is indignant. “This job, we try to save as many as we can. Sometimes that doesn’t mean everybody,” he says. Then we see a shot familiar to anyone who waited for the end credits scene after Ant-Man. The Winter Soldier himself, Cap’s old friend Bucky Barnes (played by Sebastian Stan), is trapped in a warehouse with his metallic arm locked in a vice. “Buck … You know me?” The assassin whose mind was wiped in the previous Captain America movie looks up. “My mom’s name was Sarah,” he says. “You used to wear newspapers in your shoes.” Then we get a reunion between Cap and another powerful being: Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man. “Sometimes I want to punch you in your perfect teeth,” he says.

Something has happened. Something that can’t be undone. The world wants heroes to stay heroes, but they need to be regulated. Controlled. We see a flash of heroes. Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), Paul Bettany as The Vision (wearing street clothes! A dapper suit), Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye striking a pose with his bow and arrow, Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa– in regular clothes, and also in his Black Panther armor, complete with gloves that extend razor-sharp blades from the fingernails.

As we see various teams of powerful beings running at each other, the footage cuts to another van—this one with Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man inside. He meets Cap and totally geeks out. “Captain America…” he says, awestruck, shaking his idol’s hand. And shaking it some more. And then some more. “I’m shaking your hand too long,” he says. Pinwheeling around, he looks at Scarlet Witch. “I know you, too!” Ant-Man says. “You’re great!” He tries to play it cool. “I want to say I know you know a lot of super people, so thinks for thanking of me,” he says. Then pauses. Blinks. “Thanks for thinking of me,” he corrects himself.

Sounds like it was the D23 footage but with various new shots.

Redwing seriously looks amazing!! The trailer does open with Cap's team in the African Market. Falcon mans a stealthy Redwing making its way under a van filled with explosives. Cap orders the team to attack. Falcon does an super awesome dive from the rooftop he's in and doesn't pull out his wings until landing closely.

We see another van open and Crossbones steps up along with his goons; with the most prominent goon being Ex-Thanos actor Damion Poitier.. Black Widow makes her way to the market in a very cool tracking shot reminiscent of her sequence in IM2 and does her signature leg wrap on Poiter. Falcon also does a pretty cool set of combat moves utilizing his wings.
You know those on set pics of Cap and the crowd screaming at something above them in fear? It's Cap throwing a grenade in the air. Someone fires a grenade at him (I think it's Crossbones) and it latches on to his shield. Cap tosses it in the air before it explodes. As Cap flinches at the air explosion, Crossbones kicks him hard from behind and their fight happens. I didn't notice anything different from the D23 descriptions in this one. Cap dismantles one of Crossbones' gauntlets pretty quickly. Crossbones then pops a blade out of the other gauntlet. Again, Cap beats him up and cracks his helmet. We don't get a good look at Rumlow's burnt face here.

VO by General Ross - looking a lot slimmer since his TIH appearance. Talks about vigilantism. We see a shot of - what looks like - Steve Rogers preventing a helicopter from crashing in slowmo. He pushes it away with one hand as his other hand is against a railing. We see his Avengers team going through a series of control rooms. They are led by Martin Freeman's character. In the blink-and-youll-miss-it moments he had, definitely felt more like a Henry Gyrich than an Everett Ross.

The Ant-Man post credits scene happens. Bucky does remember Steve. He tells him his mother's name and how he used to put newspaper in his shoes - you know D23 stuff. Best part of this scene is how Bucky delivers that line with an expression of relief and pain. Steve does a heartfelt smile. You just know how happy he is to have his bestfriend back.

Quick cuts of what looks like Cap smashing a soldier into a column. Bucky in his red jacket outfit punching other soldiers. Several shots of Crossbone with a different looking mask; this time with a yellow looking visor. These Crossbone shots are intersected with scenes that are set in this building. We get to see that truck flip.. More shots of Crossbones walking down a hall. Lots of flickering lights in what appears to be the control center I mentioned earlier.

One of the more interesting shots in the trailer was Cap and Bucky walking in snow towards a secret looking base in full superhero attire. The shot was barely 2 seconds but man did Bucky & Cap standing side by side in a mission look [frick]ing good.

Holy shit that shot of the funeral scene. You see that scene happening - where they're carrying the casket in the aisle - and how beautifully framed it was, expect the tears to flow. Considering how we pretty much know who's funeral that is, Cap carrying the casket makes this scene heartbreaking to watch.

Those Tony Stark lines to Steve about how he wanted to punch him in his perfect teeth? I was expecting it to be during a fight. Those scenes were set in a conference room, probably from the same venue where those control rooms are. We see a helmetless Iron Man open an elevator door with his hands and he has a huge black eye. Another with Tony Stark walking behind General Ross.
Super fast glances at the other heroes. Hawkeye doing Hawkeye stuff with his bow. The Vision pondering as he plays chess in a suit. There's also a super fast shot of Black Panther revealing his claws as he's locking up against Hawkeye's bow.

We then see that infamous airport fight scene thanks to those leaked pics from a few weeks back. The money shot of Cap's team running though the tarmac was unimpressive to be honest. One dude online said it best - "It looked like the scene in Anchorman when all the news teams converged in that alley and fought.". It looked really goofy and awkward. But then again, this is the D23 trailer they cut a month ago. A ton could be added to that scene for some kickass superhero flair.

That end tag with Ant-Man was what you'd expect it to be. The theater went insane just seeing Paul Rudd in the trailer. He's going to be one of the best additions in the movie no doubt. He cops a feel of Steve's pecs.

The way I see it Black Panther is taking the comic role of Spider-Man in Civil War as far perhaps being the catalyst for the split? I read a synopsis recently where it alludes to Black Panther sitting on the fence/changing sides. I also seem to remember when Boseman was first cast you had him on stage between RDJ and Evans in a tug-o-war situation.

So, so awesome.

Spider-man suit looks pretty great - a perfect "first costume" if we expect it to progress from Ditko-Era SM to McFarlane, etc.

Marvel knows their shit.

Looks truly awesome. And this comes from a cynical bastard who's usually not that excited by comic book films. But I love Evans and Downey in these roles. Fighting for your values rather than just combating a 1-dimensional villain makes it so much more personal and engaging.

I wasn't this excited for a Marvel film since the first Avengers.

I've seen this twice already. Such a great movie.

Yes there are some exposition scenes but they are deftly woven in and around some of the greatest action scenes you are likely to see, not just in a comic book movie, but in any action movie that has gone before.

They really made some wholesale edits to the big airport scene for the marketing campaign. There's shit going down in that scene that needs to be seen on the big screen.

The fact the Russo Bros are making Infinity Wars just gets me amped.

Just got out. It was awesome, as expected.

Marvel rarely does wrong, and when they do right it is so, so, so right.

So many amazing highlights to count, and so many legitimately funny moments. Can't wait to see it again.

This is what I imagined when I was praying Spider-man came back to Marvel. I don't know how I feel about Aunt May being a hip younger woman, but I'm sure I'll learn to like it if the performance is good. I thought Rosemary Harris nailed Aunt May.

Does the movie seem more like a 3rd Avengers film than a Cap sequel? Does Rogers get shorted with screen time, because of the large supporting cast?

I think TWS was better but this was a solid entry to finish up a pretty damn good trilogy overall. I don't think the plot was as interesting as TWS. What transpired felt like the natural and logical culmination of the events that have happened in the MCU thus far but it didn't seem enough to sustain the whole film. It pretty much boiled down to revenge and redemption. T'Challa, Zemo and at the end Tony wanting vengeance for their families deaths and Cap trying like hell to save and vindicate his friend. It all works, I just didn't find it as gripping a story but it made for great character drama. I didn't care much for the revelation of other Winter Soldiers and was kinda fearing that that would end up being the climax of the film with the heroes fighting more super-soldiers. Luckily it did not but that just made it that much more of a superfluous plot point. Zemo was a bit of a disappointment as well.

Black Panther and Spidey were both great. It seems like Spidey's finally in capable hands. I feel I'm looking forward to BP's solo film more right now though since he's the fresher character.

Action and set pieces were great as expected. The fisticuffs are fast, brutally hard-hitting and framed perfectly. The Russos know their stuff on how to stage and shoot a fight scene, that's for sure. The airport battle was lot's of fun. Spidey got most of the cheers and laughs with Rudd's Ant-Man a close second in my theater.

The vfx for "young Tony" were amazing. I thought the young Michael Douglas in Antman looked great but this was even better.

The two credit scenes were pretty underwhelming.

It didn't feel like Avengers 3 to me at all and Rogers has plenty of screentime. The Winter Soldier/Bucky's plight is a major driving point of the film so in that respect it's very much a direct sequel to Cap2.

Any scene with Black Widow in it was awesome....especially whens he took on the two hydra agents....dear lord, that stunt person is awesome.

It is absolutely a sequel to TWS first and foremost. It also follows on and references AOU heavily.
