I have to say I'm genuinely intrigued and excited.

There are stuff that I'm not quite fond of on first impression: Buzz lightyear Ghost dog whittaker looks straight from the superhero movies I never go see. Kung fu Donnie Yen looks a bit too much like action movies silliness.

I've long been prepared to accept that there will be these influences to a degree in the new SW, to put it simply: because Mainstream, because Disney, because Lucasfilm folks clearly love what I call Marvel crap etc... I have to respect that they do and that the superhero action stuff seems to be a part of americans culture that I just don't get along well with... eh, no big deal I'll get new Star Wars.

That being said, a good, good bunch of pretty nice stuff:

• Yavin 4 seems extremely faithful in terms of look and feel.

• Despite the modern action movies esthetics, there are shots like the stormtroopers in the sort of Lothal marketplace that looks very good and classic, I was concerned about the esthetics and I think overall it can end up just fine.

• Mon Mothma! It's the actress from ROTS right?? She looks spot on!!
• I expect the beach scene to be full of saving private ryan references, I think it's promising.

• There seem to be moral questions SW fashion, not too much good vs bad. I bet and hope they will apply what they experimented in the fabulous and beloved clones-centric arcs from TCW.

• Overall it leaves me wanting to learn more, I'm definitely curious. Exciting day, certainly puts me in a nice mood.

Loved the new Trailer. Guess that we will get something very Warsi for the SW movie. Can't say how excited Iam. This movie really has my interest. I'm sure it will be in the same box Office Region as Iron Man 3...

Really good teaser. I was pretty on the fence about this movie, but there was a lot to like in this teaser. The "I rebel" line was a bit corny, but it wouldn't be the first line goofy dialog showed up in a Star Wars movie. Loved the shots of the classic Star Destroyers and the AT-ATs.

I like it. Some of the scenes seem 'lifeless'. I dont know, dull or flat? I wanted more grid, dirt if that makes sense? Im sure they are still tweaking of course. Not feeling the female lead in this teaser. But love just HOW accurate it looks like from the ANH timeline. I mean the star destroyer holy shit. It looks perfect. The story line is what intrigues esp. after living with ANH for so many years. And the complain about Donnie Yen already. Oh Come on. You really think they hire him for his acting? He's a bad ass and a little martial arts in a SW surely can't hurt.

Is it directed at me? If so I have to make it clear I'm more nitpicking than anything, I didn't criticize Yen, rather the action-movie feel of this fight sequence we glimpse, along with a few other stuff otherwise it looks really, really Star Wars.

I mean there are similar stuff in TFA, for me I still think the "traitor" stormtrooper fight scene looks more like a generic action movie fight then this particular SW approach in term of action style, but it doesn't take me out of the movie, I can even find the scene fun to watch regardless.

We shall see how the whole scene end up... I do like Yen's character look

Yen's character is blind. He could be a force wielder a la Maz Kanata and not a Jedi (Remember no Jedis in this movie). I can't wait to see him kick stormtrooper ass with a wooden stick! It's like ANH on steroids. CAN'T WAIT!!!

What I'm glad about also, is that while very modern, both TFA and this one don't make the mistake of having this "blue filter" like all those blockbusters. The color grading is fairly restrained, it's pretty slick but remains natural enough.

Also I feel the photography is very close to the look of TFA, and this one is filmed digitally if I recall correctly. I hope eventually this debate and people boasting about shooting on film will be put to rest, you can clearly do crap and excellence with both, and especially you can make one shot on film look very digital (Jurassic World, sadly), and... vice-versa. They touch the picture so much anyway, I think it really depends on their choices in post production more than anything.

Anyway, I also agree that having a movie without Jedi is pretty neat, and still having other sorts of acrobatic characters, which they did well on TCW too.

While the story and mythology of the Jedi will always be fascinating to me, it's incredibly refreshing to have a feature film in which they have no presence.

Gareth Edwards, the director in the chair for Rogue One, is shooting the movie – at least in part – with a large format Alexa 65 digital camera, at a 6K resolution. The ultra-wide digital format has been created to be comparable with the 65mm film used for IMAX capture, which could make Rogue One look spectacular in one of the technology's massive theatres.

So, while the new trilogy might be looking for the same sort of old-school look as the originals – instead of the too-clean, ultra-precise look of Episode II and III – the anthology movies could well have their own distinct look and feel, all provided by their use of new digital formats.

Palpatine bows to no one. Maybe, its a yet unseen Inquisitor? The walkers in trailer debuted in Rebels. Maybe, this guy/gal will as well?

sure they alter it, I think they always do now on such movie, but they made it subtly enough and arguably nice. It's true, for whatever strange reasons, all falcon sequences and a few others are a bit tinted, and I think less beautiful than the fantastic looking scenes of the first 30 minutes, but still far from blockbusters ugliness, barely noticeable in fact (didn't notice it in the cinema).

Don't really want to get into that debate, but I disagree about "too clean, ultra-precise" for 2 & 3, especially looking at what we've been getting these past 10 years after those 2. For that matter I don't know what TFA is if not ultra-precise (looks great anyway), certainly not "dirty and gritty" like sheep like to repeat over and over ... err I won't even say more at least for now.

I still maintain that you can shoot on film and get an artificial digital look like Jurassic, and on the other hand I think of Pirates 4 (regardless of the quality of the movie), filmed digitally and at least looking quite natural, and I bet they could have made it look even less shiny and clean with the same gear if they had wanted, but of course it was in the realm of clean disney family film. Well I hope I at least made myself clear in that it's a bit of a non-debate and that I'm sure most internet people who says they prefer film don't have a clue about what they are talking about.

Anyway... back to R1 excitement, that's a nice star warsy day!!

I know I'm going against the grain here but it seems like my worst fears have been realized.

The trouble begins right at the start. A sulky piano, hand-held shot and doleful glare from our female protagonist (ironically, all elements capturing exactly how I feel about this mismatched effort). For all its flaunting of familiar characters, costumes, locations and vehicles, this is decidedly not Star Wars. It's cool-to-be-hardcore fan filmmaking run amok without an ounce of the romanticism and promise of fun that makes Star Wars so unique and endearing.

After his Godzilla, I knew this was coming. Saving Private Death Star Plans.

Yes they were. I watched them at the cinema. (On opening day or weekend I think.) I remember not only watching them at the cinema but also waiting in line for each film and both times the line stretched out of the cinema and around the corner!

That would be so out-of-step with this bed-shitting approach. You'll find none of that cheesiness and old-fashioned charm that has defined the canonical Star Wars films thus far.

I don't trust a guy who quotes someone like Kubrick in a big way in his earlier films to handle something that's supposed to be a rollicking and delightful time at the movies. And you see this in the guy's affect in interviews. He's not fun and sprightly like Abrams. He appears introverted, calculating and stand-offish.

Films can originally be made for TV but debut in the cinema first, like The Clone Wars movie. The Ewok movies definitely debuted in the cinema well before TV, or at least in the UK they did.

I liked Anthology better but a SW story is fine. Crawl or no crawl. Personally Id like to see no crawl to separate itself from the Trilogy's we know. But I wouldnt mind they trying a new opening concept meaning that every 'sw story' movie would begin in the same style. There are just so many cool possibilities.

In the end, really who cares as long as RO is a decent movie. After TFA I really want it to be good.

Then again, Star Wars has always been a pastiche of various genres. But in this respect, RO looks fairly and boringly one-note. However, if there's anything as unexpected and interesting as a musical number in it, ala Return of the Jedi, maybe I'll change my tune a bit.

So I've been seeing The Stupid on the internet wondering why they recast Rey's character for Rogue One, or how far after ROJ this film is set....

I feel like an opening crawl is necessary, to inform the "casual fan" about where we are in the timeline. I'd also like to see that consistency from the episodic films. There ought to be one or two common elements at work here, IMO.

It's a good trailer and I'm more excited for it than I was before I saw it, which was hardly so.

However, the trailers and marketing need to teach the audience where this movie is on the timeline. It would be smart to show clips from ANH with text that explains "...before A New Hope rescued the Galaxy..." Or some such. The average person isn't smart enough to tie their own shoes let alone figure out where Rogue One fits in with the new set of Star Wars movies.

On the crawl/no crawl debate, I don't know which camp I fall into yet. I kind of want the STAR WARS + crawl to be unique to the episodic films to structurally distinguish them from the standalones. They don't need to follow the same conventions and I like that about the idea of standalones.

Rogue One only needs a one sentence introduction via an inter-title or subtitle. During the opening scene, movie could state that: "The events of this story take place shortly before Episode 4: A New Hope."

Hey The_Somnambulist: while your listing dream projects, why not hope for a film version of the entire ballet from ROTS? During the movie, the director could cut to audience members for reaction shots like in Bergman's adaption of The Magic Flute. Either that or it could be shot from a first-person p.o.v. on a GoPro.

But seriously, these Star Wars Stories beg an important question about identity: What is Star Wars with all these different directors and approaches in play? Is it now this amorphous creative playground where, as I stated, anything goes as long as the catered-to fans jive with it and part with their dough over it? What's keeping boundaries from being crossed? Do fans just want what other and (sexy) genre-filmmaking has to offer? Isn't what made Star Wars a successful, unique and valuable franchise in the first place its iconoclastic defiance of prevailing trends and the offering of something fresh, sourced from an oasis of independent and rebellious creative minds?

My answers to these questions ain't so optimistic.

I'd love, love, LOVE a Ben Kenobi movie. A quiet drama like The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. Have it be about the Force. Ben with a gross, matted beard racked with guilt in his tiny little house. Venturing out only to manually repair a moisture vaporator. Not talking to Yoda, Qui-Gon, or Bail Organa and the Alliance. Send a Jedi Hunter (maybe played by Jeffrey Wright) who knows Vader is Anakin to sniff around Tattooine. Have Ben take the blame for a disaster at a village, earning him "crazy old wizard" status. Keep it sparse and desolate. Yeah, I've thought about this a lot. Hardly "A Star Wars Story" though...no wars among the stars. But McGregor is willing to do revisit the character, why not let him? Not make my movie exactly, but a Ben Kenobi movie.

So when I first heard the title for this movie I assumed it would center around Rogue Squadron, but it sounds like the abolishment of the EU has conveniently shoved Kyle Katarn out of the way so that a new Death Star Plans heist story could be made. At first I thought that Kanan from Rebels would be filling those shoes, due to the similar outfit he wears and the fact that his partner Hera gives such strong Jan vibes, but this trailer seems to definitely suggest that this new Jyn character will take Kyle's place. She and the new roguish bearded guy that makes an appearance here.

Her name seems to me to have obviously been derived from Jan's, considering the striking similarity:

So it's weird to see these stories overwritten, I am not used to the "histories" being rewritten thing that they apparently do in superhero films, not sure that I like that. It's probably a combination of that, the death of

, and the transparency of Disney's efforts to get all the money back that they possibly can, that kept me from liking Episode 7 as much as I wanted to. So far this Rogue One movie looks cool though, so I will endeavor to remain optimistic.

I like Longtime_Sunshine's suggestion about making a Ben Kenobi film. A quiet drama would be well suited to his situation I think, somewhat like the Kenobi novel where it was more local rather than galaxy spread, and we should delve more deeply into his character. Obi-Wan has always been the best Jedi to me, I could easily watch a feature-length movie about him adjusting to a desolate desert life. Interestingly, Ewan McGregor has made a movie called "Last Days in the Desert" in which he plays Jesus. I have not seen it but I am curious, apparently he also plays the devil.

Well, he only existed in the Expanded Universe and doesn't have as much presence as the characters who are more wrapped up with the Skywalkers or Solos like Jacen or Mara Jade, so I guess I can see how you could miss him. He is mentioned and sometimes plays a part in some of the EU books set in post ROTJ era, but his biggest claim to fame I think was being responsible for stealing the original Death Star plans after Mon Mothma hired him to do so.
He is the main character in three computer/video games, and plays a big part in a fourth, and those games were followed by three novels, each with its own dramatized audiobook version. There are a couple of action figure versions of him as well. If you don't follow these things I'm sure you might easily miss him, he doesn't go back so long that you would have heard of him in 77-89, more of a 90's/millennium thing . I think his first appearance was in 1995.

Well, no one knows who Jyn Erso is at all, so I think the "draw them in with a well-known character" approach stood a better chance with Katarn. He is at least popular with people like me who would definitely be drawn in by a movie with this character.

That said, I can see lots of possible reasons why they went in a different direction. Kyle Katarn's story is out there already, in choosing to stick with that story, they may not have as much room to try new things and we'd already have the plot long before we see the movie.
By choosing not to stick with the already established story, they could keep the element of surprise, and if they toss out the story, there is no real need to keep the character the same either. It seems to me that the general public would better receive a new tough female lead than a bearded guy. It seems like a Katarn-like bearded guy will at least still play a part in this story, but the way the trailer showed him it looks like he will be a secondary character.

Still, while I plan to treat myself to seeing how this new Jyn Erso character's story unfolds and I await it with great anticipation, the EU devotee in me will always remember- Katarn stole the plans first!
