After seeing Indy 4, re-watching Indy 4, going over the pre-production and production notes, analyzing what was and what could have been, I honestly feel that another movie shouldn't be made. Surely, there are moments of classic Spielberg and Indy greatness in KOTCS, but there's just so much that separates it from the first three that I honestly feel as if seeing it was a bad dream and it was never made at all.

It's very sad to say, but Indy 4 taught me that the era of Spielberg and Lucas is finally dead. In hindsight, Indy 4 was more disappointing that any of the Star Wars prequels. At least those films knew what they were - their tone was set. Indy 4 is so all over the place that I'm amazed Spielberg was confident releasing it.

Indy 4 - I didn't even bother to download for free. I simply want it erased from my memory. Sure there were what, like 2 scenes or moments that were sorta cool or interesting, but the absurdly stupid or redundant scenes easily overtook the brief cool parts.

Not to rehash the Indy 4 review thread, but for fucks sake as soon as it opened with the fuck all scene of Indy blowing gun powder into the warehouse that was magnetically attracted to the skull- it fucking LOST ME. THE OPENING SCENE LOST ME AND I COULD NOT BE BROUGHT BACK. How bad is that? Very fucking bad.

Ok so moving on- and should it move on is the major question, I think there are two approaches to the cinematic raping of one of our beloved franchises:

1) Keep going because, you know what? You bastards OWE US. You owe us a GOOD if not GREAT Indy franchise movie. Meaning Mutt taking over, Indy still doing his thing- whatever! Just do it better next time.

2) Leave it alone.

I agree with CoGro though: don't. Opt for option 2. You guys have done enough damage already. Though I have to say I met uberproducer Kathleen Kennedy late last year and I still had no problem gushing over her, but it was for all the prior movies she helped make with Spielberg and her buddy Frank Marshall.

Also, Spielberg probably lost a ton of money dealing with Irving Madoff so don't be surprised if he's back on board fodacash.

Considering his age, I thought Ford looked better in KOTCS than he did in TLC. Maybe it was the fact that Crusade was supposed to take place a couple years after ROTLA. Now, KOTCS is a disaster at many times.

In my deepest, darkest nightmares I see a God awful overexposed Kaminski-photographed scene of Indiana Jones as a goofy, grinning old-timer remarking, "somewhere, your Grandpa is laughing!" Yet I can watch the movie for the first hour and enjoy it.

Shia's good and I think he would've gone over better if he wasn't Indy's son, a fact that was obvious from day one and they laughably tried to turn into a plot twist. Ford was really hit-or-miss, Karen Allen should probably never have been in the movie. The script was shit. Darabont and Koepp's scripts stank of un-Indy-ness. They need a new writer and executive producer.

I think this thread is a fair sampling of the reaction to the news about Indy 5, coming off of Indy 4. I might disagree with it, but I can't deny that the reaction to Indy 4 was much worse than any of the Star Wars prequels. I think the expectations of Indy 4 were inflated in part to the 19-year wait since TLC, and the expectation that with that much time and versions of the script, that the director and producers would "get it right" according to the fans.

It wouldn't surprise me to see a potential fifth Indy film killed due to the kind of reaction we're seeing in this thread. Ford will be 70 by then, and if Transformers 2 bombs, Shia's star will dim considerably.

My feeling has been, there was no need for Indy 4, though I enjoyed it. TLC's ending was perfect, both for the characters, and cinematically. The franchise remained rooted in the 80s (1981, 1984, 1989), Ford, Speilberg, John Williams, etc. were at the top of their games, and the final scene was of our heroes riding off into the sunset. How can you beat that? Indy 4 showed you can't.

I agree with you on basically everything else though. Indy 3 is a wonderful movie and ends beautifully. But what they're doing to the Indy franchise is akin to Lucas suddenly coming back and saying, "Hey guess what! I'm going to make episodes 7, 8 and 9!" I like to watch the Star Wars prequels. Loved'em back then, still do. Indy 4 is like a cinematic abscess that most people want to forget.

And love'em or hate'em, there was an actual point to making the Star Wars prequels. There was a rich backstory that needed to be told in order for the saga to be complete. Indy 4 and further Indy movies are pointless and can only be seen as monetary lining to the pockets of the filmmakers and staR Harrison Ford. Let's not forget that HE is mostly pushing for this shit to continue when he tells his buds that they're only getting older and it's best to make these movies ASAP. I doubt anything online short of a massive petition would kill Indy 5. But I think we've seen in the past that petitions rarely if ever work.

The only way to send a clear message is to boycott a fifth Indy film, hit'em financially. But what's the likelyhood of that happening??

Then again there's always the X-factor.

Alright, so I guess that I'll be the loyal opposition in this thread and say "Crystal Skull" was a pretty darn good flick, better in fact than "Last Crusade." What Indy 4 did for me was truly reinvigorate the Jones character after "Last Crusade" had ostensibly neutered the persona with a long winded father-son story arc that was heavy on the sentimentality (for a Republic Pictures throwback). That said, I'm not looking forward to a fifth film in the franchise if it merely continues the narrative through line set up by "Crystal Skull."

I read an article Roger Ebert posted recently about John Wayne and his career. In it he talks about his later films, "True Grit" and "The Shootist," films where the Wayne persona took precedence over the character he played in those films and it got me thinking. Considering Harrison Ford is probably the closest living actor we have to a John Wayne and Indiana Jones his most iconic creation, what if this next film was Ford's "True Grit?" Now that would be something worth seeing.

After having seen KOTCS, I’m more excited for this film than I was prior to 4. I liked KOTCS and thought it had some really clever moments. I don’t see why 5 wouldn’t be as good or better.

In general, I wouldn’t find mind more sci-fi elements. I don’t think the inter-dimensional aliens were too a big a stretch for the series as the first three films included murderous ghosts, a heart ripping cultist, and an immortal knight. To me, using sci-fi archetypes is more creative than trying to rehash the historic artifact McGuffin from the first three.

I agree especially that the Prequels were better than Indiana Jones 4. I thought Indiana Jones 4 was OKAY to say the least. It was a mix of Indiana Jones meets Close Encounters Of The Third Kind. It was just ugh at the very end of the movie and felt pretty cheap. Like a lot of you I too only watched it once (via the cam version) and after that I never saw it again.

I am not surprised they're actually considering an Indiana Jones 5. I'm sure it's primarily Lucas who wants to milk that franchise as he has done with Star Wars. Speaking of Star Wars I actually haven't watched any of the films in a long time. I mean I do once in a while but it's rare these days. I'm sort of waiting for the Blu-Ray set before I fully watch all six in a row again.

Shia Lebeouf may be an "ok" actor, but I feel like he's shoe-horned into all the movies I've seen him in. His delivery isn't very natural or believable. And while I only endured Indy 4 once, I remember thinking he was distractingly annoying in it. So why they seem to want to pass the Dr. Jones legacy on to him is beyond me. His best role was the 5 lines he had in I, Robot.

Plus, he seems like a real dork in every interview I've seen/read w/him. They should keep him in movies I'm only slightly interested in. Like Transformers. I think he should end up in a celebrity boxing event with that gay kid from Who's the Boss, because that's about the level of action-star I think he's at.

Raiders was the shit, Temple of Doom was a classic, The Last Crusade was a'ight in a slightly lesser way than the first two. And the last one was like a trainwreck on LSD. And the Shia factor made me not want to bother watching it again. Why they want to keep him on for another one is beyond me. Has Harrison Ford gotten so off the wagon or old that he can't carry an Indy movie by himself anymore? And that ugly hag from the first one came back as Shia's mom. So what? I wouldn't have stuck it to Karen Allen in her prime. They should have brought back Kate Capshaw, because she was hot, and didn't give off the impression that she had BO. And she wouldn't have birthed the Lebeouf, either. Spielberg is just to insecure to have Han Solo mackin' on his old lady methinks.

Still, hope they get it together. I'm not gonna let 1 stinker out of 4 films de-fan me. But It doesn't sound good from here in Indiana-land.

Shia is currently the definitive average young American guy in Hollywood that I can think of. He isn't a pathetic, bizarre dweeb type like the Superbad guys or unrealistically beautiful, ripped, singing sports star Zac Efron type.

I wouldn't be surprised if Spielberg rejuvenated Ford with CGI for the duration of the whole movie. And he'll most likely aim for a 1:1 Raiders remake just with a different religious artifact (but without Nazis because it's a family film and Nazis can be a source of angsty thoughts). Also Indy will accidentally bump against a picture of Sean Connery at least 3 times and has tender thoughts about his dad. Anything to please the fans and soak the film in sentimentality.

This film would be set in 1968, assuming the timeline between the Indy-verse and real time still apply to this release. Kingdom of he Crystal Skull came out in 2008 and was set in 1957.

KOTCS was the weakest of the four, sure, but I just love the character and I hope Indy 5 is the grand finale for one of cinema's iconic figures.

Would you rather have Indy continue to hunt for Nazi-related artifacts? That shit can get old after, two films of Indy doing exactly that. Besides, it was the 50's, so a new direction was needed. If you read the early drafts for Crystal Skull; There was always going to be aliens even in Daranont's draft. I blame the problems of Crystal Skull squarely on Shia Leboeuf and Spielberg's inability to say no to Lucas on using too much CGI. Especially now that Shia is acting like well, a fucking idiot. I swear every time Shia does something boneheaded and calls it a performance art, it makes me want to give him a good slap to the face.

Riding an elevator in the middle of London up and down does not constitute performance art.

I think the source of all the problems with Indy IV was Spielberg and Lucas inability to agree on a story idea they both wanted to do. To me it's obvious that neither Spielberg nor Ford wanted to do aliens. I remember Spielberg admitting to warning Lucas that he's tired of making aliens-themed movies in general. Of course, Spielberg would just remake Indy 3 if left alone, but it was equally absurd for Lucas to sketch a story Spielberg didn't believe in and then leave him in charge of doing it well. I mean, Lucas kept pitching the same flying saucer storyline to Spielberg for years! The worst part of the movie is the climax in the temple which doesn't have any mystery, flavor or point to it at all. It's where you clearly see no one actually knew what this movie is about (besides Indiana becoming a dad, marrying and thinking warmly about his dad - yes, I get you, Steven, you're a family guy)

My biggest problem with Crystal Skull was the Mac character. Poorly acted, poorly written, really served no practical function in the story at all. Remove him and his dialogue from every scene, and I think the movie gets stronger.

I thought Crystal Skull was fucking amazing. The only few things I didn't like about it was the rehash of War of the Worlds' disintegration visual effect used in Spalko's demise and Mac's bizarre reaction to his unexplained leg paralysis during the finale.

Beyond that, loved a wiser, kookier Dr. Jones and his rebellious, mean-streaked sidekick, Mutt Williams. Anything goes!
