Some striking visuals for sure but this really isn't doing it for me. So dour and painfully generic-feeling. I've questioned it before - where's the old-fashioned, youthful charm, vigor and fun that makes Star Wars such a distinct property? Especially for a story so close to the era of the average, mouth-breathing fans' oh-so-sacred Original Trilogy? That charm, vigor and fun is all but absent in this sampling of what's to come. They try to lighten the mood with some sarcastic exchanges here and there but it feels tacked on and flat. Also, all the lines are delivered with more or less the same tenor. Apparently, everyone's too fucking cool for a little light-heartedness or vocal variety.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Onto hopefully more full and nourishing Star Wars with Episode VIII.

Shame. I really want to be on-board as often and as early as possible with all that this new Lucasfilm era has to offer.

I agree, Somnambulist. This might be the first Star Wars film since 1999 I don't care to see on opening night. I just don't see the appeal beyond, "remember these things from your childhood, here they are bigger and newer!" Every single line of dialogue was delivered in a monotone that rivaled the prequels. I raised my expectations for TFA and was let down, so I'll keep my opinion tempered to hopefully be pleasantly surprised.

The prequels at least had that requisite conservatism of the story's period and the sheer, exuberant formalism and philosophy direct from "The Maker" to justify its unconventional style. For me, anyway. This has no excuse. All the characters seem like scoundrels and mischief-makers perfect for a context, not unlike the OT, that screams and demands high passions and thrills.

This should be far more exciting and compelling but I'm reading a whole lotta stale and lifeless. Even if it is fairly eye-catching. As someone intimately familiar with the work of budding filmmakers, I see this poisonous combo all the time.

You guys are insane. I am the biggest skeptic there is on Rogue One, but this trailer was breathtaking. A great trailer doesn't always mean a good movie (see: Suicide Squad) but as a standalone piece of well-constructed entertainment, this was fantastic. If the stand alone films are going to work, they shouldn't feel like the main episodes and this doesn't. That's a good thing.

I find the somber tone to be a nice counter pointer to the TFA's Star Wars-lite approach. And, I'm a guy who has a big soft spot for the prequels ("sand" and all).

Overall, you can't judge this movie by the trailers. In terms of characterization and the thrust of the story, the trailers barely gives away anything.

To me, trying "something different" with Star Wars is a net good thing. With new the Star Wars films, I always go back to the Batman mythology. No one would have guessed all the woeful and wonderful directions that Batman has taken after the character become removed from Bill Finger and Bob Kane.

As I've said before, it's good to see strong reactions one way or the other. The moment that live-action Star Wars material is released without much attention will be an incredibly sad day.

This trailer looks by far better than TFA. And no, since we already have another Trilogy in the making, we dont need Skywalker to be in every movie. And not every movie needs to look lighthearted and fun. This is exactly what they needed to do. Something darker, gritty war like SW movie. It matches the ANH vibes visually pretty well. And its got Vader in it...I mean how do you already bitch about this?

What do you mean? How do you anticipate that being released and why without much attention?

Filoni has stated that starting in season two of TCW they were doing prep work for the live action. I always thought Pre Visla was a funny inside joke for the folks doing pre-vis on future live-action Boba jetpack scenes. It's fun to watch that season to imagine what they were setting up. Even if the live show is never done as envisioned, the story group no doubt has all that fun stuff at the ready. The Untold Tales panel re-iterated that even though TCW episodes were never produced, Filoni says "It still happened." So we can assume the same for the live-action. But E_CHU_TA do you expect some Underworld/1313 materials in particular to surface?

Oh, and how does this fit into this thread? Simple. We know that Saw was in TCW and supposed to be in UW and is now in R1. And we have this lovely mysterious female protagonist with unknown parentage. Just like TFW. I like to thing our Rogue might be related to Palpy? How old is she do you reckon? Exactly when did Sheev supposedly do the horizontal mambo with the crime queen as
Cory Barlog told IGN?

And as for the trailer. Damn, I just LOVED the reveal of the Star Destroyer. The way it showed each level emerge from the darkness. I just wish they hadn't spoiled it in the trailer.

I have mixed feelings.

Visually looks pretty striking. The dialogue seems pretty generic and on the nose, but that's not abnormal for a trailer.

I actually like the dire tone. This one could really go either way. When you go for serious & dark, there's less margin for error. But there's also a higher upside.

I think the action scenes will be great, can't argue with you there. But in the end, it will feel like another sci-fi movie that's detached from the Saga films.

I'm more interested in the Han Solo movie since Kasdan is doing that one.

I'm with you on that one. Though I will admit, it bothers me less for the Anthology films than the lack of time passing between TFA and Epi VIII. It's my understanding that the Anthology films are intended to have a darker, grittier tone; I'm cool with that. I also expect that they will be somewhat different from the Skywalker story arc in terms of storytelling. So while it will feel a bit odd without the Crawl, I'm open to at least seeing the film before I start getting too critical... even if there is no lightsaber duel.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say there will be plenty of white guys in the story who are not villains. Disney may have an agenda, but it's hardly an egregious one. To my disappointment, my daughter showed only minimal interest in Star Wars growing up but she was absolutely blown away by The Force Awakens. I have zero doubt that it's because of its female lead. For the first time ever, I saw my daughter bursting with excitement about a Star Wars movie. If that's the agenda, count me in.

It bothers me in the abstract but it's not a big deal. I remember how bothered I was that the 20th Century Fox fanfare would be missing from The Force Awakens. After I saw TFA, I realized how little it actually mattered. That opening fanfare wasn't what I loved about Star Wars, just something I associated strongly with it.

And as for the opening scroll, this might be for another thread, but has anybody else noticed the Lucasfilm logo is now only a dark silver color? In I-VI the Lucasfilm logo is green, shimmers, becomes dark/silver, and then glows becoming gold. But in TFA it's just the dark color. Same in this trailer. Seems kinda sad to me.

Her lack of flaws is a valid criticism of her character, at this point. So it would be nice if our heroine in Rogue One struggles a bit more, makes some mistakes and grows through experience. This "Mary Sue" critique is totally legitimate because that's nothing like Luke Skywalker in the original film. You know, Luke, the backwater farm boy who flies off with an old man and a smuggler, bungles his way through rescuing a highly valued prisoner from the bowels of a heavily guarded space station, surrounded every step by stormtroopers, and then, with no piloting or battle training AT ALL, singlehandedly buzzes along the surface of said space station and takes it out with a one-in-a-million shot eschewing his targeting computer and instead relying on the mystical guidance of his dearly departed mentor.

Didn't hear anyone bitching about that back then.

No, a 19 year old T-17 Skyhopper pilot, who already essentially had practice shooting womp rats of similar size to the Death Star's exhaust port, destroyed the Death Star while piloting an X-Wing as part of a team of pilots after being instructed how by General Dodonna using the Death Star plans. He was also helped by Han Solo in the Millennium Falcon, who got Darth Vader and his wingmen off Luke's back, along with (the voice of the Force ghost of) Obi Wan Kenobi who helped Luke focus on using the Force instead of the targetting computer. Obi Wan had already told Luke about the Force, demonstrated it and helped him train a bit before he blew up the Death Star, unlike Rey just using the Jedi mind-trick out of the blue with no explanation of how she even knew about it.

I must admit, most if not all the stuff Rey did can be explained away though, but only if they do explain those things in Episode 8 and/or 9 rather than J.J. Abrams or Kathleen Kennedy etc just explaining it themselves in an interview or something like that just to make excuses. For example Rey could explain her piloting skills (beyond her subconcious Force-enhanced talent) and knowledge of the Millennium Falcon's workings by saying that she had previously worked on and test-flown various ships for Unkar Plutt inlcuding possibly the Millennium Falcon itself when he first got it or maybe another YT-1300 or similar Corellian ship.


Edit: It's also established fairly on in A New Hope that Luke is the son of a Jedi, so not just some random farmboy. I know Rey is pretty much guaranteed to be Luke's daughter, especially judging by that artwork leak, but it hasn't actually been confirmed yet and obviously wasn't in The Force Awakens.

Rey's knowledge of Jedi mind tricks is analogous to her knowledge of Luke Skywalker. These are myths and old wives' tales passed around, even on planets farthest from. It's the same way that Jabba the Hutt or Watto know about Jedi mind tricks in ROTJ and TPM, respectively. No explanation required. It's called deduction and context.
