This is so exciting. He is the next John Williams and I can't wait to hear his take on Star Wars music.

I was thrilled to see this news yesterday. No offense to Alexandre Desplat, but nothing I've heard by him has that Star Wars quality to it. Michael Giacchino is a much better fit, IMO.

I am not thrilled by this - Alexandre Desplat is more creative-

Giacchino is hit or miss. His Jurassic World score was a huge miss but most of the blame for that should fall on the movie itself.

For me, it's not so much about creativity, but whether the composer can hit that "John Williams" sound (that's the best way I can phrase it.) I've heard Giacchino do it in the Star Trek and Lost soundtracks. Maybe I haven't heard enough Desplat. Any recommendations?

Rogue One is doing its own thing in a lot of ways. Clearly. Should be the case with the music too. No?

I still think Giachinno can do music for Rogue One in the vein of a war movie since he did Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and the Medal of Honor and Call of Duty video games.

Totally agree. I think he is really spectacular. He's no John Williams, but sometimes John Williams is no John Williams.

It bears repeating.

You guys are okay with a tonally, directorially and visually askew Star Wars movie but not with a musically distinct one? :what:

Not a problem for me. I'm getting more and more excited about this. I didn't give a flying Bantha turd about Rogue One earlier this year.

Okay, that's more like it. I have listened to some of Desplat's work but none of it was as Star Wars-y as these. The last one was especially convincing.

Now I feel like that was an opportunity missed, but I'm still confident that Giacchino will do a great job with it.
