Hmmm - what's in a name? I think it's probably a better title than The Force Awakens, but it's also a bit repetitive as we've already done this bit of narrative with Return of the Jedi...

Could "The Last Jedi" refer to Luke, or Rey?

Or could it refer to both of them, since Jedi is both singular and plural?

Also, red font for a movie title...

Awesome title! Has a sort of Samurai / Spaghetti Western ring to it.

I'm sure it refers to Luke, but then leads into Rey becoming the next Jedi.
Also, Luke is referred to as "the last Jedi" in TFA.

Luke was the last Jedi 2 films ago. I hope there's more going on in the narrative than this...

I like it. It's a line that Snoke says in TFA.

Snoke: The droid will soon be delivered to the Resistance, leading them to the last Jedi. If Skywalker returns, the new Jedi will rise.

What would be interesting (for me anyway) is if Luke trains Rey in the force, but not to be a Jedi... He knows that the way forward is to reject both Jedi and Sith doctrines. Him being the last Jedi would then have some narrative substance that differentiates it from the OT. I doubt it will even pan out like that, but interesting to speculate on the possibilities.

It's also in the opening crawl for TFA.

...will not rest until Skywalker, the last jedi, has been destroyed.

It's a good title. I was thinking it might be a bit cooler if it was "The Last of the JedI" to reference Yoda's line from ROTJ: "When gone am I, the last of the Jedi will you be," but The Last Jedi is cleaner.

I say it refers to Luke and then Rey. Also, the title could be ...

an ironic reference to Rey's rumored linage as the first Jedi. Maybe she's the reincarnation of the first Jedi who then becomes the last Jedi during the ST timeline?

An uninspired title. It sounds like there could already have been five fanfilms with the same name.

Rian Johnson posted this on his instagram today with the caption:

"Felt so good to drop this into the cut this morning."

So with the title revealed it's probably a safe bet the first teaser footage won't be too far off. Super Bowl perhaps? Looking back at the timeline for TFA, the first teaser was released 22 days after the title was announced.

I think it's Rian's intention that the title be singular.

I'd be surprised if it didn't refer to Luke.

At this point, it's impossible to tell if it's singular or plural. I hope that the movie gives a better indication of the meaning behind the title than The Force Awakens. (It's Rey's "Force" that awakens, right?)

Well Luke was referred to as "The Last Jedi" in the TFA crawl and Snoke even called him "The Last Jedi" so at this point I'm leaning towards a singular meaning.

I agree that it's clear based on TFA. However, Lucasfilm's own The Star Wars Show purposely confused the subject last week.

Unless the foreign translations came from Lucasfilm or Disney, I'm not sure that they reveal privileged information.

By the end of the film, there could be more than one "Last Jedi" at a time (meaning: first Luke, and then Rey after Luke). In that manner, the title is both singular and plural.

Foreign translations continue to reference multiple "Last Jedi."

Rey cuts a fine form as a Episode VIII Jedi samurai. I'm not sure how to take her continued use of "The Skywalker Lightsaber."

In Star Wars, light side masters often defer to their apprentices. It makes perfect sense for Luke to pass on his lightsaber. He's not even happy to see it at the end of TFA.

Awesome and cohesive symbolism already.

At the end of ROTJ, Luke's (at the time) new, green lightsaber is dangling from his belt. Perhaps he's held onto that one.

I’m not sure why the writers thought that Yoda was the natural choice for the Force ghost. Either they didn’t understand the narrative trajectory of the original 6 films, or they simply believed Yoda was the more popular character for the target audience.

My guess is he was easier for ILM to recreate than Obi-Wan. Plus, how old do you make Obi-Wan? McGregor-young, or Guiness-old? As he is designed, Yoda can be relatively timeless/ageless.

Post the prequels, I think the narrative choice would have been Anakin appearing to Luke, but Obi-Wan would have made slightly more sense than Yoda (in my opinion). I’m pretty sure they could have done something as convincing, and easier, than Tarkin in R1 with Obi-Wan. I suspect that they just thought Yoda would be more popular, and as you say, easier for ILM to recreate him.

Yeah, Rian Johnson confirmed it in this interview from uproxx

You went with The Empire Strikes Back version of Yoda, the ornery version.

That felt really important to me. And, actually, I cut some of that out and Frank Oz said to me I had to put it back. Because when I first pitched him the scene, it’s like the Yoda from Empire is back because that’s the one Luke had the emotional connection with. And that’s why we did the puppet and recreated the Empire puppet: Neal Scanlan and his team did a recreation of the Yoda puppet. It’s not only a puppet, it’s an exact replica of the Empire puppet. They found the original molds for it. They found the woman that painted the original eyes for Yoda. Then Frank came and worked with them for a few weeks to get the puppet right. He did a lot of testing and a lot of adjusting with the puppet creators. It was amazing to watch the process. The idea that the last time Luke saw Yoda was in Return of the Jedi and the notion of getting back to that version of Yoda to form the emotional connection with Luke – including a glimpse of the impishness, as part of their relationship. It made a lot of sense.

Yes i agree, but then, according to Lucas final version of ROTJ, you'd have to use Hayden, and then you'd have the problem of Anakin appearing to Luke and give him a speech about Rey and Kylo, just to have Luke say: "... and you are...?" :XD:

Luke knows who Anakin is as he saw him on Endor at the end of ROTJ and, one assumes, has been speaking to him for decades. If Hayden didn’t want to do it/appear in it, well that would be another matter...
