TROS John Williams Musical Score

Postby ki adi moonshine » January 2nd 2020 2:00 pm

Anyone else disappointed with the score for TROS? I feel TFA has the best score of the ST.

TROS was missing the magic of the previous film. I do think, possibly, this may be due to studio meddling and a lot of music was left on the cutting room floor. Which is really a shame.

What do you Think?

I like it a lot, but I'm still warming up to the closing credits music. What is that theme that plays after the main theme and before the Imperial March?

John Williams' brother, who plays as part of the score's performing orchestra, alluded to the maestro having included virtually all of the themes from the rest of the saga as part of the TROS score in an interview a few months ago.

In light of this purported corporate meddling debacle, one wonders what the fuck happened to all that?

There were several cues that were in the trailers and TV spots that included themes of the past. Also the CD and download soundtrack album has stuff that is not in the film, and the film has stuff not on the soundtrack. That's infuriatingly typical. They still need to put out complete, uncut soundtracks for Eps.2 and 3, as well as the ST. I wonder if they ever will?

I was not a fan of the scores of TFA and TLJ at first. But they have really grown on me in the years since, and they contain some of my favorite tracks in the saga - Maz's Counsel, On The Inside, Kylo Ren Enters the Battle, The Starkiller, Fun With Finn and Rose, Ahch-To Island, The Spark and the opening sequence music from TLJ are all magnificent.

I'm a little warmer to the TROS soundtrack upon release, but there are *significant* chunks of the in-film score that don't appear on the soundtrack. Rey walking through the ruins of the Death Star is a glaring omission. It's almost as if Disney was concerned about the movie being spoiled upon its release, which is, well, really fucking stupid.

I would love to hear a justification for not releasing full, complete scores to all the films. I would pay an obscene amount of money for a 9 (or 11) film box set that is comprehensive. I can't imagine Disney's costs to produce such a set would be prohibitive, and a 20-disc set would probably go for $150-200. A digital release would cost it even less.

Hey Disney, you're all about money, right (reddit revelations)? TAKE MY MONEY AND RELEASE ALL THE MUSIC.

Giddiup with said box sets! What John Williams accomplished with the entire saga is worthy of its own totally separate existence!

That was my favorite cue in the film. I was so fucking mad about that.

It wasn't a bad score, but I still think his scores I-VI are much better. But then again, in the PT, he had the OT to go off of and re-work certain themes in addition to the new themes, which were great.

I have to say, I did love Rey's theme from TFA. I didn't care much for TLJ score. TROS...I need to see it again. I hear JJ was not happy with the music they put in during the "Final Lightsaber Battle."

I feel like there were a lot of cues that were left on the cutting room floor which is a travesty. And I still want an extended ROTS score.

I don't know if anyone picked this up, but on Kimiji when Poe and Zori were having a private conversation on the balcony the cue from AOTC was playing from when Anakin was in the Lars Homestead hearing the news about his mother. That was very...odd placement.

I have no doubt that was more studio meddling.

I recognized that, all the way. It's one of my favorite cues from AOTC.

And I agree that seems a strange time to insert that cue. It's a rare quiet moment for two characters, yet the music is very foreboding and sends a strong message of imminent drama. The tone feels off for the scene.

Funny thing is that's one of my favorite cues from AOTC. That, and the music leading up to it when Anakin leaves and then DOTF during dusk. It's like that track was supposed to play someplace else, but, TPTB decided to stick it in the most inconsequential scene ever.

I was happy to hear it though. I think the music in AOTC, and the film as a whole, is underrated so it's nice to have some representation.

I noticed the cue as well. I was wondering if it were cut/pasted from the AOTC score or if it was new music that echoes the score from AOTC. I'd have to watch the film again, or analyze the scene, to be sure.

It was a new arrangement. I played veryyy close attention because that leading up to DOTF in AOTC is one of my favorite cues.
