Hmmm, witnesses have been sketchy about a few details such as the description of the Sarlaac and just what songs were performed in Jabba's Palace. Enough to get the case against Luke for assisting the murder of the Emperor dropped. Especially seeing as the description of the perpetrator has been debated very recently.
Anyway, given the freedom to change history (and taking into account that only Ep4 and 5 exists as part of the question), I quite possibly would have imagined the whole Jabba thing very differently. Han would already be out of the carbonite and scheduled for execution very shortly - as a very public example to those who do business whith Jabba. I think Jabba would have been more obviously a gangster, maybe even human, and certainly would not have had so many people or muppets around him (which would seem to leave him very open to attack). He would have been more of a Godfather type figure.
I think Luke would have actually been with Yoda at the start of the film, simply because that was always the reason I thought he didn't go with Lando and Chewie when I was a kid. So Leia, the droids would join Lando and Chewie at the start mid-rescue. Everything would go horribly wrong and Luke would sense this while training. This time, however, he would not leave like he did in ESB. He made his commitment to Yoda.
As a result, Han dies, after a particularly soppy girly scene with Leia where they say their goodbyes. Luke goes a little off the rails, blaming himself, made all the worse by Leia blaming him too. Chewie almost kills Lando for getting Han into that mess in the first place and the whole group is broken up. The idea here is to tempt Luke to the dark side. He has no sense of being part of a group any more. He is alone when he eventually confronts the Emperor.
So, anyway, to cut a long story short Leia, Chewie (who sort of becomes Leia's bodyguard) and the droids join the Rebellion to mount an offensive of Coruscant (there is no Death Star 2). Luke turns himself in to Vader, who brings him to the Emperor. The battle looks like it is about to be lost and there is no hope, when Lando turns up with troops to mirror Han's action at the end of Ep4. They gave up on him but he did not give up on them. They destroy the Emperor's Palace just as Luke faces off against the Emperor and Vader deep below ground under Corsucant. Luke looks like he will turn to the Dark Side and join the Emperor, has a last minute change of heart, Vader kills Emperor and dies. Everyone else lives happily ever after. The end.
There ya go. Not any better than the real thing of course but I was just having fun with it.
