The new suit appears to be more in line with the traditional SM look. I like the bigger McFarlane styled eyes. They should have started with this look to begin with.

Her neck makes her look like a dude in that pic.

The first movie was mediocre and the premise alone made it insulting.

So they made the suit finally look like Spider-man, great. I have no interest in this franchise.

Re-watched (parts of) Amazing Spider-man. Upon reflection, there is almost nothing in the movie I like.

Peter Parker/SM: terrible characterization, awful costume, jerk of a superhero
Gwen: totally waste the spunk of the very likeable Emma Stone on an overly sensitive and dramatic portrayal of Gwen (Stone was better suited for MJ)
May and Ben: both drab, run down paternal figures rather than upbeat and inspiring
Connors: untrustworthy and menacing character even pre-accident

The origin story, tone, plot and music all felt as wrong as they could for Spider-man. It's like Marc Webb intentionally tried to do the opposite of what Raimi did just to stand apart. That would be a good idea if Rami didn't get the tone and style of Spider-man right on.

It was a completely useless exercise a year ago and there is nothing to suggest this movie will do anything but continue that.

Umm, yeah, no he didn't. I absolutely hate those movies, from beginning to end. Toby M. has got to be the second least palatable comic-book movie-casting decision of all time. Hated the story line altogether, to me it never felt legitimate to itself let alone appropriate for the character. I grew up a Spidey fan, and I was so letdown by that trilogy that I thought comic-movies could never be made right afterward.

But to each their own, as the kids say! I'm not trying to start a fight, Cogro is calculated enough of a poster for me to believe he has a probable and valid reason for feeling the way he does. I think I just might really hate Toby McGuire so much I never gave it a chance. He just comes off as, I dunno, missing a chromosome or something.

That said, I didn't really loathe the First (new) Spiderman movie as much as everyone else seems to. The "Ultimate Comics" origin rehash is kind of a dumbass move, considering it came as such a departure for the casual fan. I didn't mind Gwen Stacy though, not nearly as much as I hated Mary Jane in the Rami flicks.

And while "I didn't hate it" isn't a resounding stamp of approval, I'm kind of interested to see this second installment. If anything just to see where it goes from here. The entire Spiderman film legacy makes me wish there was someone at Disney ready and willing to just write the check and bring Peter Parker to the Marvel Movie Universe and recast him altogether.

A third recast would be a disaster you say? Pfft, in comics each artist draws a character somewhat differently. Comic-book fans ought not to be phased by this. I don't think multiple recasts have hurt The Hulk for instance. Not as much as the terrible Hulk movies have, anyways.

you guys should love this then. Paul Giammati as the Rhino in some kind of pre-cgi "Mech" gettup. (Yes, that is a barb-wire tattoo on his forehead)

Image

so we now have Paul Giamatti as Rhino, Jamie Foxx as Electro, Chris Cooper as Green Goblin and Colm Feore as The Vulture. With a returning Lizard, looks like they're going for a Sinister Six angle.

I originally thought the "tattoo" on Giamatti's forehead was some kind of tracking marker for CG purposes. Is there a comic book-based explanation for a barbed wire tattoo?

Listen, I'm a "hater" of SM2 and SM3 makes a lot of bad decisions with some of SM's best material, but the cinematography and tone of the films (when the script is getting it right) reflects the charm and uplifting nature of Spider-man to me. That's how I read Spider-man on the pages and that's how it was portrayed in the best of its media (particularly the 90s animated series). The first half of SM1 is good, if not great. Forgetting the script, which can go off the rails in all three movies, the heart is in the right place. The music even grew on me.

Why thank you! Is Tobey is the best possible SM? Probably not, but he was more Peter Parker and easier to root for than Andrew Garfield ever could be. The biggest miss as far as casting for me is MJ. They got that all wrong and made her just like any teen pop movie girl: over-emotional and a damsel-in-distress machine.

I wish. He's too iconic to be constantly recasted, but if Spider-man joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe it would feel more authentic with a new (and better) actor. He would live perfectly in the universe Feige and Marvel have created.

There was some scuttlebutt shortly after Disney acquired Marvel Studios that they were willing to pony up the dough to regain the rights to SM and FF4 from Fox. Bullshit no doubt but there were some reports about it.

I only just recently viewed TASM which shows how much interest I had in doing so to begin with. Not surprisingly there wasn't anything I liked about it either (other than mentally undressing Emma Stone). I would add a lousy Lizard design with sub-par CGI to CoGro's list of criticisms. ASM2 appears to be offering the same head scratching creative decisions of the first film. A CG Rhino, an Electro that looks like a Pixar caricature of Emperor Palpatine, another purported Green Goblin "armor" and Mary Jane casting drama. I'll give them a point for the nice new Spidey suit. But if that's all there will be to like, who cares? Why did I start this thread again?

Omfg don't mention the FF movies, I might have to vomit. When I said Toby M. was the second worst comic-book movie casting decision it was in direct reference to the gang-rape they did on those movies. Shudder.

Victor Von Doom takes first place. Does that portrayal even count, in a licensing or intellectual property sense? It was so far removed from, and lacking any of the appeal of the original comic-book character that it was laughable. And at the same time disheartening, both that the opportunity was so squandered, and that the rights were in the hands of people who thought it acceptable to treat the character that way. The rest of the FF weren't great either, oddly enough except for Johnny Storm, who in a strange twist of wtfness was the only one who seemed 'in character', though now he's also a believable Captain America and would have to be recast if that deal ever went through anyway.

I must admit, having read the above comments I feel as though I'd like to amend my previous statement to read: " :quote: kind of interested :quote: to see this second installment" .

It really is sounding like garbage. And yeah, the Lizard effects, story, et all were pretty weak. No argument there. Doesn't seem like the new villains are impressing anyone either. Electro that looks like a Pixar Palpatine. Ha! I actually laughed out loud at that. Nice.

I wonder if me having seen ASM on a DVD I borrowed for free has anything to do with my previous assessment. Maybe, I like free mediocre shit more than mediocre shit I have to pay for. That might be it. That and while Garfield isn't 'ideal' either, at least he doesn't look like he's drooling on himself in a corner in between takes. Still, not a glowing endorsement. "He doesn't look like he's mentally challenged" doesn't look good on anyone's resume.

The first thing that sprung to mind when I saw the Rhino design was the "Crying Wolf" character from Metal Gear Solid 4. :whateva:
Given the lameness of Electro and Goblin, I suppose it's the least objectionable of the three villain designs.

A message to Sony, Avi Arad, et al you're going to hear a lot of after people have had a chance to see this movie:

Stop making Spider-man movies. Stop it. Please.

EDIT: I'm thinking of doing a thorough review for this one only because this Spider-man series, and this movie in particular, encapsulates so much of how to build a franchise and a cinematic universe the wrong way. It's a screenwriting minefield and no matter how hard Andrew Garfield (who I didn't like at all in the first film, but fits much better here) and Emma Stone try, they can't escape the traps the guys behind the camera laid for them.

EDIT 2: I didn't review it because it wasn't worth my time. Based on it's box office disappointment (really, a SPIDERMAN movie that not only didn't perform as well as it's lackluster predecessor but hasn't yet cracked $200M in over a month), it looks like ASM3 is being re-evaluated and it's release has been pushed to 2017. I'm happy that the people have spoken. This series was a slap in the face to comic fans and movie-goers. It was poorly conceived and produced for all the wrong reasons.
